I didn’t either. I balked but then I looked into salary cap and if consider Jnr and RCG signed 800k contracts when the cap was 9.6 mill and it will be 12.6mill by start of 2028. 800k is the same percentage of the cap as 1.05mill
I also reckon the higher cap means the top tier players will get thrown higher increases whilst the min wage goes from like 135 - 150k so not a huge jump

It's a valid point, and I totally respect the opinion that he is worth that money.

I am looking at it from the point of view that spending that sort of money on a player may cost us a player such as Ryda Talagi, or Sam Tuivati.

Now, it's true that Ryda, and Sam, are somewhat unproven - but they have been developed by the club, and they are our future.

From a "bang-for-your-buck" perspective, they offer better value, because if they can perform 75% of what Keon does, at 25% of the price, we are sitting pretty.

I rate Keon, and think he's a stud.

I just think we need to evaluate big-money signings on terms of our future.

I'd hate to lose them, just to sign the short-term high of securing a high-profile forward.

The mower man Jim made it sound like decent players wanted to come to Parra. All he has signed was over the hill players or reserve grade standard looking for opportunities.
New NRL standard Eels just this year:

Iongi
JAC
Lomax
TDS
Williams
Walker

We started the year very poorly but our finish reflected the quality of the squad. It is weaker next year but there’s plenty of youngsters and they should all be better next year. Some of our senior players will decline.

Our finish to the year reflected the quality of the squad, and we mostly did it without Drown. We’ll miss Lomax though, at least in 2026.

I agree. I think Morretti and even Doorey with the game leaning towards smaller and lighter forwards are suited to the game amd will do a job.
Dooreys 25 and is just about to play his best footy now. He enters his peak. He isnt a star but I think he is NRL level.
A top shelf centre and winger is needed. Im also not sold on our edge or KK yet but I agree he has potential.

I'm a massive fan of Luca Moretti - tough as nails, and doesn't back down.

I have always liked Doorey - was let down by his defensive reads, and fitness, but he seems to have improved both.

Like you, I think our biggest area of concern is our outside backs - we need some new talent in.

Strange that the club has suggested that they have made the biggest offer for a forward in club history, over $1 million per season. That’s what is concerning, make an offer like that and can’t convince a more than decent player to sign, not the first time and surely it’s an issue that needs more than a little improvement.
With new cubs coming in (and R360 luring them away), the natural result is player salary inflation. You should expect record offers in this environment, even when two clubs are going for the same player. The Dragons no doubt made their biggest offer as well. If it was bigger than our offer then it doesn’t matter if we’ve never offered that much before. It’s a meaningless bit of trivia.

And if you think Koloamatangi hasn’t taken the biggest offer (rather than chasing ‘success’ or whoever ‘sold the club’ better) then you need to ask yourself why his destination was out of Souths, Parra and the Dragons, rather than the Panthers, Roosters or Bulldogs.

Most players care about money first, second and third. They would even care about geography before they prioritised onfield success. Premierships don’t set you up for retirement, unless you want to be a bus driver on the Gold Coast with every sports journo having you on speed dial.

Who is our forward leader in 2027???

Paulo will be on his last legs and JDB will be 50. Hopgood??? Williams?? Hardly anything to get excited about.

I don’t think we necessarily need a ‘leader’ bro. Honestly if there’s not much between our best and worst forward in the 17 we could just be a real terrier underrated pack that rips in every week. We don’t have to be reliant on one big dog.

Hopgood and Williams are the older heads who both are quite intelligent and are there to steer you he young bulls around.

Riley Smith also has leadership group written all over him.

*PS I should have prefaced this by stating it’s the one day of the year I can’t have a punt so my brain is all over the shop. I’m like an ADHD kid without his meds.
