Marshall says no to Schuster as Tigers, Manly finalise Talau swap deal
By Michael Chammas
June 25, 2023 — 4.59pm

Future Wests Tigers head coach Benji Marshall has informed new recruitment boss Scott Fulton that he is not interested in making a bold play for rising Manly playmaker Josh Schuster.

It comes as Manly and the Wests Tigers finalise an immediate swap deal that will see Tommy Talau depart the Tigers midway through the final year of his deal to link up with the Sea Eagles.

In return, the Tigers will receive highly regarded young playmaker Latu Fainu, which the Tigers hope could also yield the signature of his older brother, Samuela.

While a deal is yet to be finalised, both Latu Fainu and Tommy Talau were rested from the lower grades this weekend in preparation for the likely swap.

Marshall’s lack of interest in Schuster comes as Manly offered the five-eighth a new three-year deal to keep him on the Northern Beaches, almost guaranteeing that he will remain at the Sea Eagles.

Fulton, who was recently signed by the Tigers to oversee the club’s recruitment, has a close connection with Schuster having lured him to Manly as a teenager.

He had told club officials that he had the relationship with Schuster to entice him to the Tigers if they wanted to pursue his signature.

However, Marshall, who will take charge of the club as Tim Sheens’ successor in 2025, has told the club that Schuster is not the answer to the Tigers’ halves dilemma.

The club has been keeping a close eye on Schuster’s form over the past couple of months and, in line with the advice of Marshall, have decided against pursuing the hulking playmaker.

Meanwhile, Daine Laurie is set for an NRL recall when the Tigers head north to face the Cowboys on Saturday.

Laurie hasn’t played in the NRL since round four, losing his fullback spot to boom rookie Jahream Bula. He will now get a shot at the No.6 jersey in the absence of Luke Brooks.

Laurie has recently been offered deals to link up with Super League clubs Warrington and Leeds.

The 23-year-old has opted against taking them up and will be given the chance to prove his worth when the Tigers square off with the Cowboys in Townsville.

Laurie, who joined the club from the Panthers in 2020, is off contract at the end of the season and will now get a chance to prove he is worthy of a new deal.

He was meant to play for the Tigers in their last game however a concussion in NSW Cup prevented him from partnering Brandon Wakeham in the halves. The pair are expected to combine this weekend.

Shysters a good player, it just comes down to his price.

I’ll tell you what, if Tim is supposed to be the sage master wtf is going to happen when GTA Benji Bunghead takes the reins?

To give that abject failure a say about recruitment when he’s decimated our halves and turned the backs into circus Oz is a joke.

Fainu is a better buy that Schuster, but neither of those blokes are game managing halfbacks. After everything Benji went through, you’d think he’d the first to understand what’s it like not having one.

Fainus been the highest rated kid in Matt’s/ball for a few years now. He destroyed nsw cup 2 weeks ago when I watched manly v Parra. This could legit be our next Benji moment. Exciting times. Now just need a 7 to complement him.

I heard a rumour we were looking at Taffe. His preference is to play 7 and he's stuck behind Illias. Not sure how true this is but interesting nevertheless.

Fainu is a good pickup. If we are looking at halfbacks I'd be making a play for Dodd or Taffe for sure.

I dont see Taffe as a huge upgrade to Brooks except $. If we were to get him he would be just another Tigers COE cup std player.
We need a rep player but the well has dried up.
Off subject....I liked what I saw in Tallyn Da Silva's bebut game. I wonder how that kid would play at first receiver if our ½ gets injured in a game.

Will be interesting to see how Laurie goes at 6, there was some hype about that when he first came over?

Never seen the kid but all the write ups seem to suggest I should be excited.

but the cynic in in is saying if he is that good why are Manly letting him go?

Manly have some pretty big issues going on internally by the sounds of it and they’re trying to clean out a lot of Fultons huys

Plus they’ve f*#ked their cap by having DCE/Turbo on $1m+ for a number of years and somehow have Schuster on $800k for the next 2 years

Let’s just take the W, assuming it actually happens

Luke Brooks to link with Manly on four-year deal
By Danny Weidler and Dan Walsh
June 26, 2023 — 12.12pm

Luke Brooks is set to join the Sea Eagles on a four-year deal from next season.

As reported by this masthead, the Wests Tigers five-eighth has been targeted to partner Daly Cherry-Evans at the scrum base, with a long-term deal since being negotiated.

Brooks recently knocked back a three-year extension from the Tigers, worth about $600,000 annually, to test his value on the open market after 11 seasons at his junior club.

At 28, he has long been a lightning rod for criticism at the joint-venture, having never played finals in a 200-plus game career.

By the same token, Brooks had been in impressive form until suffering a hamstring injury three weeks ago, with Tigers coach Tim Sheens and his successor Benji Marshall both keen to retain the playmaker.

Brooks ranks as one of the highest earners in the game this year on a back-ended deal worth more than $1 million this season, but has long been prepared to take a significant pay-cut on his next contract.

Brooks’ prospective signing continues upheaval on the Northern Beaches as a swap deal that sends Latu Fainu to the Tigers and outside back Tommy Talau in the opposite direction remains on the table.

The bid for Brooks raises queries around Josh Schuster, though a three-year extension offer has been tabled to keep him at Manly.

Schuster has previously pushed to be the Sea Eagles’ first-choice five-eighth with veteran Keiran Foran linking with the Gold Coast last year to accommodate the 22-year-old.

Schuster’s middling returns and fitness struggles have raised questions about his place in the halves, though Manly have regularly maintained he is still in their long-term plans.

This masthead reported on Sunday that interest from the Tigers in securing Schuster has been knocked on the head by Marshall.

The club’s new recruitment boss Scott Fulton has close ties with Schuster, the Fainu family and several other Manly players after scouting them to the club.

He had told club officials that he would be well-placed to entice Schuster to the Tigers if they wanted to pursue his signature.

However, Marshall, who will take charge of the club as Sheens’ successor in 2025, has told the club that Schuster is not the answer to the Tigers’ halves dilemma.

TWT instagram reporting Talau and Fainu swap has been agreed, they now eecpect to get the other brother as well?

TBF with Brooks going we need someone in the halves with some f**king experience?

Hopefully Laurie will provide a few answers for us?

Thank f**k we're not interested in Schuster. His defence is diabolical. Manly v Melbourne game on the weekend. 2nd half anyone's game, couple of points the difference. Both teams fighting for dominance. N.A.S. gets the ball & runs straight at Schuster. Schuster basically sticks a limp arm out, absolutely no attempt at a tackle. NAS goes straight through & runs 20mtrs to score under the posts. Melbourne go on with it & win the game. That was the key moment that momentum turned & lost Manly the game.

He is the exact type of player we don't need. I reckon he's dominated all through juniors & lower grades because of his size. Now in firsts he can't get by on talent & won't put in the hard work. He would be an absolutely attrocious buy for us.

He was training at 5/8 as his second position I think.

Doesn’t fill me with much confidence tbh, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Until the coaching staff can instil something enigmatic into the existing players, it’s pretty much a lost cause.
