Tigers hold emergency meeting with Galvin as Sullivan, Naden given permission to leave

Wests Tigers have granted Bud Sullivan and Brent Naden permission to explore deals with rival clubs as chief executive Shane Richardson met with Lachlan Galvin in a bid to placate the unsettled star.

The Richardson rebuild is well underway, with the veteran administrator seeking to overhaul the roster of the wooden spooners. The Tigers have allowed Asu Kepaoa to leave immediately for the Panthers, while Isaiah Papali’i will join the premiers from next season.

There could be more Tigers on the move, with Sullivan and Naden being informed they have permission to leave if they get a suitable offer elsewhere.

Sullivan is contracted until the end of 2027, but his pathway to first grade is limited given Galvin’s emergence and the arrival of Jarome Luai next year. The Tigers will honour Sullivan’s contract should he not find a suitable destination, but would be willing to pay part of his freight should he become an attractive proposition to a rival.

The same situation applies to Naden, who is contracted for next season.

One player the Tigers won’t be letting go is Galvin. The Tigers want to build the club around Galvin and Luai, but the challenge is convincing the former that better times are ahead. To that end, Richardson met with Galvin on Wednesday at the family’s home in south-western Sydney, where he reiterated the teenager is the cornerstone of revival plans.

Richardson declined to comment when contacted on Wednesday night, but has previously told this masthead that he won’t be granting rising half’s latest request for a release.

Galvin is only 18 and has already experienced a rollercoaster of an NRL career.

After recovering from the setback of being told as a junior he wasn’t wanted at Parramatta - the club he adored - Galvin has been a perennial winner. All up, he has won 11 grand finals: three with Eaglevale-St Andrews Magpies in the Western Suburbs junior district; four with Wentworthville, with whom he never lost a game; three at Westfields Sports High including last year’s decider, a Harold Matthews premiership; and a Buckley Shield triumph and a national championships against Palm Beach Currumbin.

However, the euphoria that came with Galvin’s NRL debut in round two - and early wins against Cronulla and Parramatta - has quickly dissipated. The Tigers have lost nine subsequent games and are favourites to secure a third-straight wooden spoon.

Galvin has struggled through the latter losses with a fractured hand and will be rested for Saturday’s clash with the Titans.

Several clubs have been monitoring the situation should he become a free agent, but it is a moot point for the Tigers, who have no intention of letting him go.

Richardson has been active since taking on the top job last year. He has signed Luai and Sunia Turuva from the Panthers, embarked on a mission to England in a bid to sign a player of interest and is trying to move on several players signed by the previous administration.

Sullivan has struggled to cement a first-grade spot and has been overlooked for the Tigers game, in favour of the new-look Aidan Sezer-Apisai Koroisau halves pairing for the Gold Coast match.

Galvin commits his future to the Wests Tigers​

Lachlan Galvin has ended speculation over his future by assuring Wests Tigers powerbrokers that he is fully committed to seeing out his contract.

Galvin sent a text message to coach Benji Marshall on Thursday night reiterating he wanted to be part of the club, just days after officials held an emergency meeting with his family.

Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson and head of football Matthew Betsey visited Galvin’s parents at their Gregory Hills home on Wednesday to discuss the teenager’s future after his agent requested a release last week.
Galvin is signed until the end of 2026, but his future was clouded after a series of requests to explore his options.

However, Galvin has decided he wants to be at the forefront of Tigers resurgence and has informed club hierarchy that he would fulfil his contractual obligations. Sources speaking on the condition of anonymity in order to speak freely said that Wednesday’s meeting, which Galvin did not attend, was a positive one.
The 18-year-old is considered a superstar in the making, a rare bright spot for the wooden spooners during his 10 NRL appearances to date. Several rival clubs were interested in his services should he become a free agent, but it is now a moot point after recommitting for the long haul.
Galvin has enjoyed a stellar career as a junior, winning 11 grand finals despite being let go by the club he supported, Parramatta. His NRL career also got off to a winning start, playing an impressive hand in the Tigers’ opening two victories.
However, it has been a difficult period since as the Tigers lost nine straight games. Galvin, who will be rested from this weekend’s clash against the Gold Coast due to a hand injury, has thought long about his development and decided as a playmaker and decided better days are ahead for the joint-venture outfit.
The Eaglevale-St Andrews junior is expected to partner incoming superstar Jarome Luai in the halves next season, while fellow Panther Sunia Turuva will give the side more strike out wide.

Coverage around Lachlan Galvin's future has raised the ire of Wests Tigers boss Shane Richardson.

A fired-up Shane Richardson has taken aim at the NRL's broadcast partner, Fox Sports, claiming the network's coverage of Wests Tigers is riddled with "lies and innuendo".
Speaking at a members' function prior to Saturday's 18-10 win over Gold Coast at Leichhardt Oval, the Tigers chief executive went on the offensive.
In a five-minute address, the Tigers boss hinted that teenaged five-eighth Lachlan Galvin was being manipulated to get out of the club by his manager.
But he saved his most pointed criticism for Fox Sports' flagship NRL360 program and its sister newspapers for their coverage of the Tigers.
"Nobody is going to knock us off course because of nine losses or because of b******t in the paper," Richardson said.
"Or the b******t on 360, nothing makes a difference to the way we think in planning for this club to be great again.
"When you get 360 deciding how to run your club, or 360 deciding how you recruit or 360 or the (Daily) Telegraph deciding how your club goes ... that's why we've won two wooden spoons (in a row)."
Richardson savaged NRL360 for criticising Danny Stapleton, a Tigers director who chairs the club's recruitment committee.
Tigers boss Richardson has spent the last few weeks attempting to reshape the club's roster by offloading players to rival NRL clubs and Super League sides.

"I've come from the bottom with South Sydney, Cronulla, Hull FC in England and here, but I've never seen the (level of) vitriol delivered to us through Fox," Richardson said.
"It's based on absolute lies and innuendo.
"What they did last week with Danny Stapleton was nothing short of disgraceful, a terrible way of painting somebody who is defenceless."
Richardson also reflected on the conjecture surrounding 18-year-old Galvin, who this week reaffirmed his commitment to the Tigers after his manager reportedly issued the club with multiple release requests.
The Tigers chief executive said he wanted the club's hard-line stance over the teen to be a line in the sand.
"This club, for too long, has been driven by the press and managers - they decide who your coach and who your recruiter is - and it stopped this week," Richardson said.
"Lachlan Galvin had no wish or want to leave this club, his parents are steeped in the culture of the Tigers.
"I can assure you once we got to the core of it all, there was no question mark about where Lachlan Galvin wants to play - and that's here."
