Well done El Duque !! A well spotted article..Those who doubted Willow's Oil theory and my "he tried to kill my Daddy" quote should read this article...Add to that recent comments on Christian Fundamentalists and there's the motivation !!

Thanks for the link El and thanks dubopov. IMO, at the end of the day, its all about money.

As is my habit with links, I'll paste a few quotes from the article in question before it gets archived. I have highlighted the worse than McCarthyism quote because I agree with this 100%.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States of America has gone mad
John le Carré (Times Online)

America has entered one of its periods of historical madness, but this is the worst I can remember: worse than McCarthyism, worse than the Bay of Pigs and in the long term potentially more disastrous than the Vietnam War.

The reaction to 9/11 is beyond anything Osama bin Laden could have hoped for in his nastiest dreams....

The imminent war was planned years before bin Laden struck, but it was he who made it possible. Without bin Laden, the Bush junta would still be trying to explain such tricky matters as how it came to be elected in the first place...

How Bush and his junta succeeded in deflecting America’s anger from bin Laden to Saddam Hussein is one of the great public relations conjuring tricks of history. But they swung it. A recent poll tells us that one in two Americans now believe Saddam was responsible for the attack on the World Trade Centre....

Those who are not with Mr Bush are against him. Worse, they are with the enemy...

Bush has an arm-lock on God. And God has very particular political opinions. God appointed America to save the world in any way that suits America. God appointed Israel to be the nexus of America’s Middle Eastern policy, and anyone who wants to mess with that idea is a) anti-Semitic, b) anti-American, c) with the enemy, and d) a terrorist....

...George W. Bush, 1978-84: senior executive, Arbusto Energy/Bush Exploration, an oil company; 1986-90: senior executive of the Harken oil company. Dick Cheney, 1995-2000: chief executive of the Halliburton oil company. Condoleezza Rice, 1991-2000: senior executive with the Chevron oil company, which named an oil tanker after her. And so on. But none of these trifling associations affects the integrity of God’s work....

In 1993... President George Bush was visiting the ever-democratic Kingdom of Kuwait to receive thanks for liberating them, somebody tried to kill him. The CIA believes that “somebody” was Saddam. Hence Bush Jr’s cry: “That man tried to kill my Daddy.” But it’s still not personal, this war.... It’s still God’s work. It’s still about bringing freedom and democracy to oppressed Iraqi people.

...Saddam’s misfortune is to sit on the second biggest oilfield in the world. Bush wants it, and who helps him get it will receive a piece of the cake. And who doesn’t, won’t... [implicates Howard]

If Saddam didn’t have the oil, he could torture his citizens to his heart’s content. Other leaders do it every day...

Baghdad represents no clear and present danger to its neighbours, and none to the US or Britain. Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction, if he’s still got them, will be peanuts by comparison with the stuff Israel or America could hurl at him...

Last Friday a friend of mine in California drove to his local supermarket with a sticker on his car saying: “Peace is also Patriotic”. It was gone by the time he’d finished shopping.

Just in case this was missed, I should point out that the author was being sarcastic.

Petition

The notion of sending Australian troops off to another senseless confrontation disturbs me.

IMO, its just a way of trying to take something that doesnt belong to us.

Furthermore, I do not believe that the USA gives a tinker's cuss about the people of Iraq nor do I accept that are interested inremoving dictators... elected or otherwise.

We have a pretty good life style in OZ, UK, NZ, the USAand Canada and I for one can't see the logic in trying to export misery. The people of Iraq are worst off than us and by going to war,it is inevitable that we willcompound their problems.

For anyone interested. There is a petition against sending Australian troops to Iraq. Not that it would do any good but you never know. There are a number of celebs who are involved and once entered, your name goes to the top of the list. :)

Willow..Thanks for the link...Pity they haven't got John Howard the actor to sign up !! That would be very cheeky !!
...and as an aside..would Dubbya be so keen about English support if he knew their cricket Captain was Hussein and their was an Irani in the team ??
..and maybe the British Army should use the Barmy Army in the front line..that would shut those yuppie wankers up...or drive the Iraqis back..

Willow,
Thanks very much for the link.I was wondering whether there was any sort of organised opposition to this absolute nonsense.
Basically, I am with the 94% of the population that says at least wait until there is some proof and UN ratification before even thinking about committing Australians to combat.

G'day Ted.
I read on one otherforum that the petition was put together by some rich hippies. They're probably right.
Weeksago I read on this forum that protestors were 'ferals' etc.
Once again, they're probably right.
Prejudice breeds prejudice...

But it seems to me that too many people are missing the point. Regardless of the veneer, loads of people from different backgrounds are opposed to launching an attack on Iraq.

With all the propaganda tools at their disposal, the USA are still struggling to put together a convincing argument.

A challenge to all those who want to invade Iraq..... Give me the reasons... its a public forum afterall...

> > Look what happens when a President gets elected in a year with a
"0" at
> the
> > end. Also notice it goes in increments of 20 years.
> >
> > 1840: William Henry Harrison (died in office)
> > 1860: Abraham Lincoln (assassinated)
> > 1880: James A. Garfield (assassinated)
> > 1900: William McKinley (assassinated)
> > 1920: Warren G. Harding (died in office)
> > 1940: Franklin D. Roosevelt (dies in office)
> > 1960: John F. Kennedy (assassinated)
> > 1980: Ronald Reagan (survived assassination attempt)
> > 2000: George W. Bush ????????????
> >
> > And to think that we had two guys fighting it out in the courts to
be
the
> > one elected in 2000.
> >
> > You might also be interested in this.
> >
> > Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.
> >
> > Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
> > John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.
> >
> > Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
> > John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.
> >
> > Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
> > Both wives lost their children while living in the White
> > House.
> >
> > Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
> > Both Presidents were shot in the head.
> >
> > Now it gets really weird.
> >
> > Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
> > Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.
> >
> > Both were assassinated by Southerners.
> > Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.
> >
> > Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
> > Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
> >
> > John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in
> > 1839.
> > Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.
> >
> > Both assassins were known by their three names.
> > Both names are composed of fifteen letters.
> >
> > Now hang on to your seat.
> >
> > Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
> > Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'
> >
> > Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.
> >
> > And here's the kicker.......
> >
> > A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
> >
> > A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe.
> >
> > Creepy huh? Send this to as many people as you can.
> > This is one history lesson people don't mind reading.;)

Locked and Loaded The two American fighter pilots who mistakenly killed four Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan were hopped up on "go pills," the airforce term for amphetamines. Apparently the airforce routinely issues speed to soldiers on long missions to help them stay awake. And after returning to homebase (having killed some Canucks) the two soldiers were issued antidepressants cuz, of course, we couldn't have them feeling bad for what they'd done. It's good to know that the military is as doped up as the rest of America. Goes a ways towards explaining a lot of their recent actions, actually.;)

"IF IT WAS NOT FOR THEM THE JAPES WOULD HAVE TAKEN AUSTALIA & NZ & YOU WOULD NOT EVEN BE HERE NOW"
The USA was a different country in the 1940s.
I saw an interesting documentary once which had ex-WWII soldiers protesting against US corporations exploiting Mexicans.
They quite rightly pointed out that they fought war to stop facism and were not going to stand by and watch it happen in their own country.

Anti-war protests have broken out all over America with rallies attracting tens of thousands of people.

Slogans being used include:
'War is Terrorism'
'Mind over missiles'
'Negotiation over confrontation'

There is an emphasis on the fact that this war is only happening because of the oil and it is Corporations who are trying to push it through.
The protestors themselves are not left wing radicals. The majority are conservative, middle-class Americans.

By and large, Americans are insulated from the news of the world and this makes the protests even more significant.

For anyone who is interested in America's current craziness, I recommend the movie 'Bowling for Columbine'. It is a documentary dealing mainly with the gun problem in america but also delves into american foreign policy. It is only being shown at arthouse type theatres in NZ but it is one of the best movies i have seen.

A couple of interesting facts from the movie. Columbine high school is in the same city as the biggest arms manufacturer in the world. (From memory I think the company in Lockheed Martin). On the day of the Columbine shootings the US dropped more bombs on Kosovo than on any other day.
