the "high profile Christian senator" to whom you referred is Fred Nile, who is a member of the NSW legislative Council (our redundant Upper House).
Not even Fred,s missus takes any notice of him.
Still if it suits your argument to promote him to Senator, fine.

midas, You're referring to incidents in that have been reported and gone to press.
A Mosque had a flaming bottle chucked into its foyer on the Gold Coast last year. It didnt get much coverage... that being the nature of the local press. But whenhalf a dozenillegal immigrants were found working in a local factory, it made the front page of the Gold Coast Bulletin.

You callthe Gold Coasta sanitised environment as if you know the place intinmately, which you do not. There's something it what you say except thatI find it to be politically very conservative place- hardly in line with my slant on things. You're making a presumption about my view based on a place I moved to... irrelevantto any discussion imo...but you're not the first one to judge others based on where they live. I hope you don't mind if I say that I find it laughable. I don't even know where you live and nor do I think its any of my business.

"...the vast majority of Muslim people in Sydney are getting about their lives without any interference "
I agree that the majority of people are getting on with their business. I wasn't talking about the majority.
And FYI, I get most of my information from my own observations... on an normal day I tend to talk to quite a few people. I certainly don't believe what I read in the daily news fodder. Iabsolutely certainI've been consistent about that.

Offcourse I knew it was Fred Nile :(.
I didn't mention his name because he doesnt deserve anymore promotion than he already gets.
"Still if it suits your argument to promote him to Senator, fine."
A minor issue wouldn't you say? How does this suit my argument? Get a grip.
I should have said Reverend Fred Nile MLC. Thanks for the correction.

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
- John Fitzgerald Kennedy This is the 35th American President's most famous quote and certainly the most famous political quote in history. Spoken during his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, the words were a call to Americans to get involved with the inner workings of their country, to accept the responsibility of world leaders and to live up to it. What followed was a decade of change in America, a time when citizens demanded civil rights, a time for demonstrations, a time of outcry for democracy. JFK had the ability to unite people and bring out the best in them, and this single patriotic quote was what inspired America to fight for a free world. THE GOLD COST SOUNDS LIKE A NICE PLACE I MIGHT MOVE THERE SUN SURF & GIRL;)

my point was that your post referring to mosques and women being attacked was exactly the kind of hype the media have been indulging in and for which you have rightly criticised them.
If you knew it was Fred Nile MLC why promote him to Senator?
Fred is a total irrelevance as is the Legislative Council .describing him as a"high-profile Christian Senator "gives the statement more credibility than it deserves
My reference to your residing on the Gold coast was not meant as a slur (half your luck !) but I feel we in Sydney where a significant proportion of the South and South west suburbs are Muslim-dominated are probably in a better position to judge what racial hatred (if any) is being directed against Muslims.
Now there have been isolated incidents as we have our share of idiots here (as you have anywhere) but my feeling is that the overwhelming majority of people in Sydney have not given the Muslim population one scrap of bother.

There will be many deaths in Iraq and most will be civilian deaths. Unfortunately the repercussions on civilians in Western societies will also be felt. I do believe that US actiobn in Iraq will be regarded by most Middle East countries and some South East Asian countries as aggressive imperilaism. This will provoke elements in those countries to hit back at the US and their allies..they cannot go head to head with them in military terms but they have car and truck bombs, air liners and maybe even ships that can wreak havoc on the civilians in these Western countries. It is going to be very bloody and we cannot defend ourselves against determined folk with enough explosives to level buildings.

"If you knew it was Fred Nile MLC why promote him to Senator?"

Thisisall a little off the track isn't it?

I didnt promote him to Senator, those were your words. On my part, it was a simple error and one of little consequence. He is a Member of the Legislative Council and not the Upper House, so f*cking what?Once again, thanks for the correction... for the second time.

"I feel we in Sydney where a significant proportion of the South and South west suburbs are Muslim-dominated are probably in a better position to judge what racial hatred..."
You know, take out four years on the gold coast and another 6+ years traveling and that still leaves me with about 30+ years of living in West, South and South-West Sydney.
I'm not a Queenslander mate, I just happen to live here now... be damned if I'll let my number plates tell me where I'm from. Anyway, I'm still near NSW.

I understand your claim that I'm not in the loop of things and I'ma slaveto media hype... its just that I don't agree. Truth be known, none of us really have the keys to kingdom in that regard.

In any case, this is not about me or you or how well connected we are. It's about a world issue from which no good will come.... and there's not a f*cking thing we can do about it.

"You must not fight too often with one enemy, or you will teach him all your art of war."
- Napoleon Bonaparte A cunning man, Napoleon rose to power after recognizing that the French Revolution had merely left political chaos in its wake. Leading his country in numerous military campaigns to give pride back to its people, he understood that the enemy must be treated with the same respect with which allies are treated. He realized that enemies are often equal in terms of intelligence and to use a tactic on them is to deny oneself the right to use it again in the future. In politics like in battle, surprise is the key to victory. Alas, Napoleon did not follow his own advice and was finally defeated at Waterloo after 23 years of war with the English and their Allies. ;)

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt FDR was president from 1933 to 1945, the only president to be elected four times. He had the misfortune of arriving at the White House during the Great Depression and that's what defined his character. America was far from being cheerful at the time but by speaking these words during his first inaugural address on March 4, 1933, he was giving hope back to the people. He meant that by remaining afraid of the future, they wouldn't be able to achieve greatness. Luckily, the speech worked to give confidence and boost morale, and the country climbed out of its misery as it entered World War II. ;)

The BBC reports that Iraqi troops are gearing up with protective suits. They say that this is proof that the Iraqis plan to use chemical warfare...

I thought this was a strange claim considering the evidence that the USA produced, sold and then released biological weapons in the last Gulf War.

The Americans deny this but the Gulf War Syndrome isprovides evidence that the US military exposed the enemy and their own soldiers to biolgocal and chemical warfare agents during bombing operations.

During the last Gulf conflict, the USA violated several articles of war when theybombedchemical repositories... setting fire to them. Its understood that the US military were well aware of the consequences of the bombing, ie chemical fallout, but went ahead anyway. Its understood that French troops would have nothing to do with the bombing and evacuated their troops from the immediate area just prior to the operations.

Ever since then, the US authorities have been involved in a cover upandinvestigations have been hampered. One theory is that the chemical agents originated in the USA and were sold to Iraq by US firms during the war with Iran.

The US military also set fire tooil fields thereby releasing toxins into the war zone. Theythen blamed it on Saddam Hussein...calling him an environmental vandal... and we believed it without question. It was revealed later that it was in fact the USA who were responsible.

...how anyone can expect us to take the yanks on their word is beyond me.

"Let them eat cake."
- Marie Antoinette This Austrian woman who married King Louis XVI was reportedly an airhead. Brought up in wealth and sheltered from the social reality, she had no notion of France's economic situation. When someone mentioned that her people did not even have bread to eat, which contrasted with the royal decadence, she apparently replied, "Let them eat cake." "Do I have to think of everything?", she probably added. However, some historians actually believe that Marie Antoinette never really said this, and that it was attributed to her by opponents trying to mount a revolt (it is also believed that French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau first wrote this phrase in his Confessions). At any rate, the Queen was despised by her people for her aloofness and was beheaded during the French Revolution

"Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it."
- George Santayana A Spanish-American philosopher, Santayana was the perfect observer. His numerous travels, writings and critiques of society were the ideal venue to analyze the world we live in. By uttering the above statement, which is a favorite of modern-day politicians, he underlined what the greatest problem with the planet is: Generations have lived before us but we often decline to learn from their mistakes and therefore repeat them. Napoleon tried invading Russia and failed; Hitler, a century later, was defeated at the same endeavor. We must trust our ancestors, but sadly, the political lesson often falls on deaf ears.;)

In all fairness to the Corsican, Mr Bonaparte had no plans to exterminate at least a quarter of the population of Europe.

Isn't it easy to preach about World problems whilst hiding (Bali, unfortunate as it was, was not an attack on the Australian mainland) behind the coat-tails of others.

And to the prick who mentioned the UK in the same breath as the US, there is probably as much, if not more opposition to this war within Britain than what you'll find in Oz, ourtroops will have to fight, unlike your's.

YIPI YI YO I GET THE 100"We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender."
- Sir Winston Churchill It was June 4, 1940. Churchill was the new British Prime Minister and the Battle of Britain was still raging as Nazi aircrafts were bombing London and other points of interest. A week before, Allied forces had tasted defeat and over 300,000 men had to be evacuated from Dunkirk. The future was gloomy. But Churchill was an optimist who had the ability to raise hope in others. He assured his people that come rain or shine, they wouldn't go gently into the night. If they were to be occupied, the British colonies would come to their rescue. It was the speech that rallied the British people and gave them the needed nudge to continue fighting.;)
