Thanks!

Don't know when the next one is, but think I might wait till next year because it was hot enough today without attempting one in summer.

Did a bit of googling and turns out the collapsed bloke survived, which is great to know. I know it's extremely rare and usually is because of an underlying heart condition but always scary when someone of similar age to you (he was 5 years my senior) has a heart attack while running

Well done Danish! Hot day for it. Was the half a real early start (was about 6:30 I think, maybe 7 when I did the Blackmores).

I shaved 5 minutes + off my next two halves after my first one, you start to get used to the distance and know what pace you can maintain after a couple, whereas (for me anyway) first one I took very easy to start because I was unsure of my ability to run that far.

I'd give the leg a few weeks off Danish. I tried to play soccer a week after the half marathon in May and it flared up, wasnt for 4 weeks or so that I started jogging a little short, flat grassy runs and ended up getting through a soccer season.

Alot of streching and probably some physio would also be handy.

Yeah was a 6:30 start, although by the time we hit the domain the sun was already blaring. Shudder to think what the poor marathon runners had to go through leaving half hour later than us and running in what was 28 degree heat by around 11.

I'm sure I'll shave off plenty in my next one when I am not carrying an injury. Would like to eventually get down to under 100 mins but that's a long term goal

Jogged about 2 km this arvo and was limping halfway through. Since then ITB causing me extreme pain when my leg goes to about 90 degrees or under. Pretty far from ideal

I just did the 9k Bridge Run for Blackmores this year (did the half the last 2 years) and the 9am start for the bridge run meant it had warmed up a fair bit and that was easily the hottest run I have done. Only 9k but felt like I had done a half after I finished.

Well done Danish on finishing your first half, it's a great achievement.

Thanks mate. I felt for the people running the 9km, was bloody hot towards the end of my race and that was probably around the start of the 9km run.

Entered another half marathon on a whim today after my brother coaxed me into it:

He is running the full marathon. Looks like a pretty good course... Especially the 5km downhill to the finish :)

An area that has generall been fenced near the top of my street isnt at present, so all these bush trails (used by trail bikes im guessing) have become available, went for a short jog up there this morning in the mud and the water, felt good. Saw some deer as well including a stag with massive antlers

Where do you live RB?

I have seen some Stags near the F6 when I was doing my daily commute between Wollongong and Sydney, including 1 that was running down the breakdown lane

Woonona

Got a pair of Nike Free's yesterday, wearing them now, feel odd. Going to need to do most of my running on pretty soft surfaces for a while as I try and slowly get my legs back to where they were 4-5 months ago

What kind of frees? I've been running in the 3.0s all year and love em, although the 5s look like they'd be good too.

3.0's. just walking around in them at present getting used to them. Hopefully will use them on softer surfaces and my other shoes as I get back up to a long run

good stuff.

once you get used to them running in normal shoes will feel wrong. as an added bonus you'll get way more kms out of them than normal shoes too. You'll wear out the upper before the sole ever gets near worn out (the upper has also been redesigned for the new 3.0s for extra longevity)

All that and they are half the cost of the halo models by nike, NB etc (which is probably why nike doesnt advertise them that much really)

I don't think I'll ever switch to the full on barefoot trail glove models though. When you see people taking them off during the city2surf to run barefoot thats a sign that they are not comfortable!

Yeah im still not entirely convinced by them on roads for long distances yet, because I guess im used to my old shoes. And i've bene for three, very short runs in the last week in my old shoes without knee pain which is a nice change, but that would partly be running on muddy trail bike trails, which are great to run. Want to run some more bush trails in the next little while, although summer plus snakes makes that a more difficult proposition

7 days from my 2nd half marathon, and really pushed myself this last week to get my pace up.

Broke my 5km record last monday (was 23:26, now 22:32), and my 10km record on thursday (down from 49:53 to 48:26). Just a few small runs this week now and aiming for a time of 1:55 or better next week.

Only curve ball is that the race is 1000m above sea level... so not sure if that is going to have an effect or not

Ooooh you're going to be a little puffed mate. I've done a few runs at that altitude and it will burn. I might suggest doing some VO2Max work on a bike (hard interval training) to get your O2 levels up but it might be too late.

where is this half marathon?

There's a good 5km run in Wollongong Sunday week, still holding myself back to 4-5km runs at present but stringing together 5-6 days of exercise at a time which is good, will push the distance up again after that

Yeah I really should have thought about it sooner so I can get some prep up. Too late now I guess!

Its an event called the Carcoar Cup in, funnily enough Carcoar NSW.

Where is Carcoar I hear you ask?? It's about 45 minutes south west of Bathurst. Its the last half/full marathon being run in NSW this year I think, or at least the last one being run in any sort of reasonable weather conditions.

The course is mapped our here - http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/39106764

As you can see, its a pretty easy course in terms of hills. Only some very small climbs throughout the race, then the last 5 kms is all downhill which should make for a fast finsh.

Elevation change of over 300m in the good direction over the course and most of the race is on private roads and fire trails so should make for a very interesting run.

fair enough

there is a half in gosford in a few weeks as well, couple fo friends going in it.

My dad ran a marathon at Mont Blanc in europe, elevations of a good 2000+ metres at times, took him 5 hours (compared to breaking three hours for previous marathons), left him absolutely wrecked

Just got back home after running the carcoar cup today.

Ended up running the half marathon in 1:45, which was good enough for a top 10 finish (field of around 85)

Having only run 2 I didn't have much to base it on but it felt like a bloody tough course compared to what I thought it would be. The seasoned guys who won the thing all agreed the hills from the 10th to 16th km were ridiculously tough.

Very VERY happy with my performance. Am sore now but can't wait for the next one to see what I can run. Hopefully a sub-100 minute time in the not too distant future
