You need Piggins - Gallop

By Brad Walter
March 20, 2006

NRL chief executive David Gallop has urged new South Sydney owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court to find a role in the now privately controlled club for George Piggins..
I don't see anything wrong with taking that stance. I think its a huge step forward if they can make amends with George. Love him or hate him, George is part of Souths. It would be beneficial in the long term. Ever heard of the term, keep your friends close but your enemies even closer? I don't think you have heard the last of Piggins and Morris.

75.8% to 24.2% - it wasn't close, it was a landslide!

as SER said, they needed 75% of valid votes, the difference was george not been able to get enough clarries out of their death beds to 'proxy up' for him
-and 30 odd in nearly 4000 valid votes is close

"They won it, I'm not going to whinge. It's theirs, they can do whatever they want with it," Piggins said. "I'm going to enjoy whatever life I've got left.
I'll be watching on TV; you'll never see me at another football game again." - George Piggins.
Didnt he say one thing and do another regarding the Charity Shield and his invite to the VIP room?

Speaking of Piggins ... he proved today that he never cared about Souths at all. He only cared about "The Piggins Way"... Do it my way or i'll get my goons on to you. Goodbye and good riddance you petty neanderthal thug. The members have spoken, and they dont want you to be a part of their future. How does it feel, George ?

You hit the nail on the head. Piggins proved that he didn't care about Souths when he squashed PHC's first proposal to fund the leagues club debt and restructure the building to lease a good deal of the floor space out commercially and have the Leagues club making a profit again. Piggins ran/runs the leagues club like a dictatorship that is why at the end of last year a few guys walked out on the leagues club.

He has complained long and hard that Souths should never be privatised yet it was his stupid, closed-minded, can't take his head out of his own a## attitude that has seen it come down to the decision that was made yesterday. If he was open-minded and at least looked into PHC's first proposal we might have never had to vote on the privatisation bid. Good riddance Piggins, wash your hands clean and p!ss off! I pray every night from now on that you will never taint Souths Sydney with your backwards views ever again!!!

I was stunned when I heard the news yesterday, to get the 75% at one of the older clubs is an astounding feat for anyone who knows the usual make up of RL club memberships.

This is great news and hopefully we can now look forward to a successful South Sydney line up taking the field over the next few years.

I think people should lay off Piggins a touch though, yes it is time for him to move on and accept that club has to move forward & his behaviour over the last few months has been terrible. However without Piggins fighting for the club 6 years ago ... There wouldn't be a South Sydney in the top flight.

Granted, he fought very hard to get Souths back into the NRL and without that passion that he himself had and inspired in others I doubt Souths would have a first grade side today. But IMO he saw that victory as Souths was partly his and that arrogance has fuelled his recent behaviour even though he has no official position at the football club.

Well nice to see the proposal get up. Cuz from the impression I've got is that Georgie Porgy wasn't going to be happy 'til Souths were back at Redfern. But it aint gonna happen. a) Cuz the ground isn't up to NRL Standard and b) Rumour has it that the State Govt wanna flog the land off to developers.

I would say it's more likely that his success in getting gathering the public support to really force the partnership to reinstate the club has gone to his head & made him a touch arrogant. Initially I do believe he was acting in the clubs interests (Back in 1999-2001) but he is most definately acting in his own interest now.

Certainly as I said he needs to move on, but some of the abuse being hurled towards him is a bit over the top, given he does deserve the credit for the campaign that got them back in. Besides the fact he is entitled to his view, regardless of how much it may differ from the majority of the RL community, he was the driving force behind their reinstatement.

With all due respect Meltiger, thats a load of toss. Nick Pappas was the man who saved Souths. He was the lawyer who worked 18 hours a day, for free, and eventually found the loophole in the law that allowed Souths to win their final court case. Without Pappas, Souths would never have got back in at all ... no amount of goodwill would sway any judge until they found something IN LAW to win by. Yes Piggins was the figurehead, but Pappas was the real unsung hero.

News also went back to court and it was deemed they were quite within their rights to punt Souths.

If thats the case then how on earth did they WIN the final appeal ? They won the appeal. Im not talking about the previous 2 court cases. They lost the first two, but won the second appeal.
