Russel Packer. Did we dodge a bullet?

I think he did. I remember seeing a photo in the telecrap of him in one of those funny square hats and black gown

Yep. You're right. Just checked n it's a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in Accounting and Finance plus an MBA.

All this in 3 years playing and training as a professional footballer and spending several hours a week in community programs.

I'm more than a tad suspicious now.

Must have slept 1 hour per night to achieve all that whilst playing footy. :)

Another masterstroke from our recruitment guru. Great call letting him go and getting Graham for half the price. I can't believe he was asking for big dollars and good on Saints for not bending over backwards to pay him what he was asking for or what the Tigers were offering.

Yep .... and that was the thanks he gave us. A sailors farewell, "Goodbye & get ...."
As it turned out, we got Graham, a genuine player with hard work ethics, something Fudge was lacking.

I hope Packer responds to his dropping. He's had a hard slog and the future looks bright for him. The key is it's up to him. Famous Rocky Quote " no body owes you nothing, you owe yourself"

On the other hand I more content
We got Graham which is an upgrade on Packer. Graham glues the team together and that is evident on and of the field. Graham is a future coach and would be an asset to this club in the long term.

If there is no way of stopping Robson's move to NQ at the end of this year, then I would be happy to take Packer if only to qualify for the NRL's compensation. We have lost a lot of salary cap purely because Johnston failed to act soon enough. Packer to prop, K Sims to right edge, Frizell to lock.

We need a bash and barge player like Packer.

You guys are taking the piss. He is a fine player.

Sure he is a wee bit of a pain if things aren't going his way.

....

Also he urinated on the field once like a dog.

Only a few who leave us thrive long term elsewhere

I can think of Tallis, Bird, Cook & Ennis just off my head
Packer gave us good service during his time in the RedV. He might not have been brilliant but he lifted the team’s physicality when he was on the field. He did not look fit last year at the Tigers. Do I hold it against him because he went to another club? Not really. He was offered good money and was told he would be one of the core leaders in Cleary’s ‘new’ Tigers team. Not everyone who moves on from our club is treating us poorly or is unappreciative.

On the subject of Graham yeah I think he, as a total package, is a step up above Packer. His motivation, ability to mentor young forwards and his role as an ambassador for our club has been first rate, and he played well for us last year. But he is tiring and his effectiveness is diminishing. Why? Because without Korbin, JDB, and Frizz at times, he has been asked to play more minutes, do more, and he has felt no doubt that he has to stand up against other packs because of the inexperience of some of our forwards. We need to keep him at our club next year but on the field? I’m not so sure.

We did dodge a bullet, especially at his pereeived managers asking price which Tigers overpaid for.

Packer was good in the first month or so when he joined us at Wests, he injured his knee and looked off the pace since.

Not sure if he and Maguire are fans of each other. I wouldn't begrudge him from going elsewhere if he feels he's not getting a go here as I don't think we are getting what we need out of him. He played well for the Saints so he might have a new lease on life if he goes back.

I can understand why Saints fans might be miffed about him taking the money and running and now being a chance of returning when shit isn't going his way.

Sometimes I think players of today do not realize how lucky they are. 'In the good ol days' players used to be paid first grade money if they played a first grade game and paid reserve grade money if they played a reserve grade game. In those days they were paid less for a loss and more for a win. Just imagine reverting to those rules of pay.

Just like reverting back to the 5 yard rule and when scrums were real contests and refs refereed not game managed + no social media.
Ahhh...the good old days of the NSWRL and a 15 team comp with Illawarra, Canberra, Newcastle and the original 12 Sydney based teams playing.

I also feel he played tough and was a good contributor for the majority of his time at the Dragons. However If I remember correctly his commitment and form waned considerably at the end of his stint (once he was aware he was leaving)

If we were to sign Merrin or Packer it would just be the icing on the cake of a season that has somehow outdone all the other McGregor years as the saddest one yet. Two washed up, disloyal ex-Dragons who would have nothing to offer and everything to gain by putting on that once sacred jersey.
