Ryan Matterson possibly on the way out?

There is no way we can win from this

If we get a good deal that is great but can anyone really see that happening. I think that we will have to pay more for a lesser quality player.

Letting him go is a problem as well. We are strengthening another team.

I'd make him stay unless we get a good deal. Maybe I'm pessimistic but because I can't see us getting a good deal I say make him stay. He was unreal last year. I thought at the backend of the season he wasn't as good and I think Benji and Brooks were both better than him but he was easily our best forward.

I'd play hardball on this.

i just dont understand this sentiment.

We already have more than a third of our salary cap sitting in reggies, why in f**ks name would you want to add to that?

Its been well quoted that hes on $350k, the club needs to step up and replace him with someone who CAN and WILL play first grade.

The problem is in your assumption that Matterson will be playing reserve grade. I would be expecting him to be one of the first picked in first grade.

The players you mention as being in reggies aren't really first graders whereas Matterson is a quality first grader. Getting Matterson off our books for $350k makes us go backwards. We won't replace his output for $350k. We don't improve our first grade team with Reynolds and Packer being picked.

If we get a good deal I would jump at it but I'd be playing hardball. If you take Reynolds and Packer as well then it's a good deal for us.

The players im talking about were all first graders before they came here. They are also all ex internationals or origin players, whereas Matts is an 18th man and as many ex players have said in the media over the last few weeks has "done nothing."

This guy has dragged this through the media and didnt want to train, Madge doesnt seem like the kind of coach that would tolerate that shit and neither should he.

@Shredder - I don't like the guy either but he can play. Reynolds isn't half the player that Benji was last season and I can't see that changing. I wouldn't pick Packer on form either. Matterson is our best forward.

I fail to see how getting rid of our best forward is going to help the team move forward.

I doubt I would offer Matterson an upgrade or a contract extension until we had some confidence in his commitment to the club and he performs over the next season. He has proven that he is a difficult person to work with.

Im in financial sales. In my line of business, if someone has indicated they want to leave, or that they are a "difficult person to work with" they get fired. We work in a high performing culture, like many sports clubs say they want to foster.

Ive bung on about culture on this forum for years. And if you are going to reward his behavior by giving him a platform to play origin, that sends the wrong message.

Dont want to train the way the coach wants you to? f**k off.

I'd suggest that your environment assuming it is sales means that the bar to be a high performer is fairly low. You don't need to be smart or have a high level of technical skills.

That is very different to professional sports where high quality talent is in short supply.

You don't give up your best forward for no benefit especially when you have at least 3 players earning good dollars who aren't high quality talent. That would be rewarding poor performance over quality performance.

We should get a good deal out of this or he should see out his contract.

05...Mattersom plays first grade at the Tigers next year and you may as well just give the whole side a nine month bout of the flu. ....it's a team sport....not as in an archery or boxing team but rugby league....real world team sport is not fantasy league....frame of mind of the WHOLE TEAM takes you to 100% ...that's how "ordinary" (e.g. "05 WT) teams win competitions when the computer says they shouldn't have. Having Matterson next year would strengthen his position on the field and weaken 12 others....real world guaranteed 110%

Unless of course he voluntarily apologises to the team for what he's percieved as having done....then maybe they'll have a group hug and start afresh. ..what possibility of that?...lo...med...high?

The same thing happened with DCE and it was forgotten pretty quickly. I say the probability that he would be accepted is exceptionally high.

We have an underpaid highly performing player on our books. Happy to let him go. In fact I think it's a great idea because he is a knob. We have to though get a good deal.

So do I. I work in IT. I have mates that work in sales. They don't have any education. They do drink a shitload of beer though.
Shredder, if you need a hug after reading this, just reach out to me and I'll be there for ya.
That's assuming you have the capacity to actually read either reply . . . . .

I work with a lot of Sales people, they are always a complete paradox. Either they are extremely hard working and a complete idiot, or they are extremely smart and completely lazy.

Every now and then you get one who is both smart and hard working but they quickly rise through the ranks and end up in a senior management position (not actually selling anymore)

I think it’s highly unlikely that he will stay and a deal will be sorted, but if no deal is done, he will play in the top grade and will have a dig. His market value will drop if he kicks stones and plays reserve’s.
I get the feeling that things will start to happen over the next two weeks in the player market so fingers crossed we can get some quality

It's seldom I agree with you but I feel you are very much on the money there.
