Sack Griffin

It is obvious to me that the only reason Flannagan has not been tagged to replace Griffin for 2023 is that two power-brokers on our Board what the replacement to be Dean Young in 2024.

It is of no concern to these two that we will waste yet another season and then put an inexperienced coach in charge for the foreseeable future.

Possm, what is the evidence any of the directors are determined to recruit Dean Young as the Head Coach?

Demetriou takes Ilias off against St George because he's having a shocker and, at that stage, the side has is down by almost 30 points in the first half. Demetriou realises the game is gone, and takes the opportunity of shocking the kid out of his comfort zone, and benches him for the rest of the game. The next week, he puts him straight back into the FG, and presumably, has a good long talk about what is required from him. He both teaches him a lesson and shows confidence in him. Ilias has played extremely well ever since.

Hook drops Sloan for a dropped ball against the titans, on a week end where all games were played in shocking conditions where even Tedesco made similar mistakes. He seems to have lost all confidence while playing reserves, and finally gets an opportunity about 10 weeks later with a spot on the bench. He's put on with 10 minutes to go when the game is gone. He gets on for 20 minutes the following week when the game is in the balance, but looks hesitant as if he's lost all confidence.

So you tell me which method teaches a young player a lesson while maintaining their development?
Yes- James Graham, when referring to Sloan's demotion earlier in the season on Fox commented that there is more than one way of helping a young talented player to correct faults in their game without dropping them- eg scheduling extra sessions of defence, bomb defusion etc. Full-back is now probably the second most demanding position (after No 7) in a team and there needs to be some recognition of that.
We'll never know this season if Hook took a dim view of Ramsey's high ball bloopers but I would hope, as someone else commented, that he didn't do to Ramsey what he did to Sloan.

If Young is a done deal as coach and hopefully asap as in from next season not 2024, then it makes sense why they are keeping quiet and possibly waiting for the Cows to finish their season.

Not sure of the timing but Young would have had a lot to do with Bud, Sloan, Feagai etc in the juniors so maybe they would get much better treatment than they are with Hooks hence why they are going for Young and to his credit he would have played some role in the Cowboys resurgence. Maybe he can bring Robson with him. Young will build a side around the youngsters not around his Qld mates like Hook has done.

Theoretically I have no issue with Dean Young eventually being coach.
But has he ever coached a first grade or better team to a win? His Test match with Tonga was a loss, and I can’t remember us winning a match when he took over from Mary.
(Surely we did but all I can remember is his cranky face press conferences).

Agree but surely he should honour his new contract and really suck up the experience. FO Hook now and install Flanagan on a 2 year, 3rd year club option coach. If he fails then Young comes in if not then winners are grinners !

I think this is an excellent point regarding his involvement in bringing these guys through and how that is a big factor in making Dean Young a good option. I would be pretty pleased and probably a bit more patient for results if Young were appointed...and the sooner the better. Imagine if we landed Robson as part of the package, I would start to hope again.

To get Young we'd have to sack Griffin first and that doesn't look like happening. On the radio today they said they think Young is #1 contender to replace Hasler if he gets sacked.
...and I think that Jason Ryles will replace Craig Bellamy at the Storm in 2024. Young, Ryles, Hornby, Fitzgibbon, Barrett all have played for us but have now coached against us as either assistant coaches or head coaches (Fitzy - Sharks, Barrett - Sea Eagles). So far, Fitzy has been the best as an assistant and now head coach.

If Young goes to Manly, you would think then that Hook will be extended for another 2-3 years unless they can talk Flanagan to take the reins, which at the moment the chances are very slack.

It would be interesting what Young learned from Payten’s prep for the games against the Dragons. Our weaknesses would have been made clear I expect

Really? Young has been linked to Manly?

Interesting off-season coming up, or it could be far more interesting than the upcoming final series.

I don’t care if Young coaches Saints at some stage; In fact, I could see both him and Ben Hornby (as an assistant) together at Saints some time in the future. But that time is not now or in the next few years imo!

Hope they go and learn their trade a little more and then come to us when they have had more of a coaching lived experience, for the benefit of both themselves and the club.
