Excellent post, the days of eat some cement and harden up you cream puff are so far in the past its ridiculous. It’s easy to be glib about these things.
But the best performing teams in the world across the various codes all use sports psychologists and some form of mindfulness. The world of sport has moved on from the amateur days of training a couple of days a week and doing a road run for fitness. In the NRL, the physicality of the modern player and their performance level is a testament to the move into elite training.
As a club, we can be a bunch of cranky old men who live off the old glory days, or we can accept that the world is changing, and we need to adapt to succeed.
One of those paths leads to the death of the club.
Couldn’t have written it better myselfWait, wait, apparently a conspiracy theory has been proposed.
House of Dragons: Hook set to live up to name with everyone around him ready to strike
'Game of Thrones' told the tale of the fictional kingdom of Westeros, where powerful royal families connived, plotted and backstabbed amongst themselves to improve…www.theroar.com.au
The events up to him standing down from selection are obviously facts.Gos’ statements are the ones that have tipped me completely.
Regardless of the era, how can you say that he has acted poorly? I don’t think there’s anyone from any era who would argue that the health of your wife or child is less important than a footy game.
And he didn’t whinge. He went and worked hard in Reserve grade - his form was good enough to warrant his inclusion in the NSW cup team of the year. Then blacklisted.
Now I don’t think he’s a great player. Pretty average journey man really. But he wasn’t even included in the 22. Surely he had a case to be ahead of some of the blokes who were putting in poor performances every week.
Building toughness into young men is great. But punishing someone for supporting his wife and child? That’s not the kind of toughness that I want at my club.
I find it unbelievable that he wasn’t in our top 22 some weeks. I also think the story that he told is the most plausible. The events up to him standing down from selection are obviously facts.
The rest is merely his take on how it all evolved / unwound after that.
Is there anything to substantiate that Hook held a grudge for the rest of the season or is that just a loose linking is done dots because it looks about right?
Of course the “well ge got picked on the reserve grade team of the year” is trotted out well how many players at 28 years of age tgat did that then had consistent 1st grade football careers?
Maybe Hook did have the shits and maybe he might have exited him for a week or 2 but then again maybe Gos was never good enough to earn a spot and the fact that others above played poorly is no pre requisite to upgrade your own ability or downgrade the lack thereof.
There are journeymen and in contrast there are players that have played for multiple clubs.I find it unbelievable that he wasn’t in our top 22 some weeks. I also think the story that he told is the most plausible.
Well the Board picked the coach. The coach picked those players to implement his plan to win games.@SBD82
I must be one of those old cranky men you were referring to above. However , I back Old Timer's comments & his rationale. Unlike yourself he passionately expresses his point of view , backs it up & is not condescending. In summary I view OT's comments as Players should be accepting responsibility for their actions / abilities rather than allowing everything to be laid at the feet of the Coach.
There is not a genuine Leader among the Group obviously because these issues should have been addressed throughout the Season :
Generally there was a lack of cohesion throughout games.
Effort from some was not supported by others.
Teamwork rarely existed.
Forwards could not gain any momentum.
Uniform Backline movements were stuttered.
Combinations were lacking.
Kicking in general play was terrible.
Error counts were the worst in years.
Defence was atrocious.
I think that nails it !
You’re talking about the same bloke who kept selecting McCullough and Woods. There are journeymen and in contrast there are players that have played for multiple clubs.
Those of the 1st persuasion often think there are spurious reasons why they don't get picked and some fans also think that way but most coaches actually get most players right and only the very good ones prove to be the exception.
And the same coach who started Mbye in the spine for most of the season. You’re talking about the same bloke who kept selecting McCullough and Woods.
That's correct he did do that and what is that Gos did that meant he should have been picked ahead of them? You’re talking about the same bloke who kept selecting McCullough and Woods.
This week Yes.. next week I saidDenied it himself !
Well he (Jack Gosweiski ) must have achieved something in NSW CUP.That's correct he did do that and what is that Gos did that meant he should have been picked ahead of them?
I didn’t say that. That's correct he did do that and what is that Gos did that meant he should have been picked ahead of them?
Gosiewski was the sole Dragon to be named in The Knock-On Effect Team of the Year for 2022, after the second-rower was heavily involved in their best performances for the year. That's correct he did do that and what is that Gos did that meant he should have been picked ahead of them?
But couldnt get a run in our 22 behind plodders like woods...Gosiewski was the sole Dragon to be named in The Knock-On Effect Team of the Year for 2022, after the second-rower was heavily involved in their best performances for the year.
The former Sea Eagle played 16 NSW Cup matches for the Dragons and finished the season alongside Mounties’ Dane Aukafolau with nine tries, the most by any back-rower. Eight of those tries came in Dragons victories, with the Red V managing nine wins in total.
Gosiewski also produced two try assists, six line-breaks, 40 tackle busts, 18 offloads, and averaged 104 run metres and 20.7 tackles (90.7 percent efficiency) per game
What is he expected to say. I hope I'm wrong but it's more of the same....Ben Creagh now a Board member says about Hook -
“From the outside looking in, it seems he has a good relationship with the senior players at the club, a good connection.
“He’s got another year, another pre-season developing some of that younger talent at the Dragons and that can only be another good thing. I look forward to seeing how the team shapes up heading into trials and round one next year.”
They conceded 621 points so obviously it’s not too hard to make metres in that comp as tackling is almost negligible.Gosiewski was the sole Dragon to be named in The Knock-On Effect Team of the Year for 2022, after the second-rower was heavily involved in their best performances for the year.
