It’s pretty serious when your worst case scenario is a win.

If you win, there will be all of this excitement and hoohaa for a week and more stories of the “ we are back” narrative and even “ we can make the finals!”

All this nonsense and the deniers in full voice.

Mary will smile at the press conference and say “ there is still a lot of work to do.”

McGregor safe for now, but Dragons face making some hard NRL calls
  • Dragons Den

Lead the way: Dragons coach Paul McGregor plans ahead with NSW State of Origin forward Tyson Frizell. Picture: Adam McLean
The elastic band snapped before slingshotting for St George Illawarra.

The last six weeks presented such an opportunity for them, if only they could have held on long enough to stay in finals contention.

But now it's over, instead becoming a farewell tour for Dragons captain Gareth Widdop, who will never have a meaningful shot at winning a title since moving from Melbourne.

In the run to Mad Monday, they meet the Titans twice, the Sharks, Tigers and Roosters, as well as Sunday's game against Parramatta.

Of those, only against the premiers would you pencil in a loss. Even six from six and they almost certainly still miss out on finals.

Social media channels and fan forums have taken to the pitchforks and flaming torches again, demanding Paul McGregor's removal, wanting to put him on the scrap heap alongside Steve Price and Nathan Brown.

Only an outsider is good enough, the narrative continues, given Wayne Bennett delivered their only post-merger premiership.

Unless the wheels really do fall off in the final six rounds, McGregor will certainly be coach next year, but the pressure will be intense from round one.

Those wanting McGregor's removal must understand that revolution, rather than evolution, is a mixed bag.

Bennett simplifies the game, raising the likelihood of immediate results, as he's done with Souths, in contrast to Anthony Seibold, rebuilding and remodelling at Brisbane. The Dragons' end-of-season review will be, or at least should be demanding.

Is Matt Dufty the long-term fullback or not? Is Euan Aitken the first-choice centre?

Where is Zac Lomax's best position?

Allegation: Jack de Belin. Picture: AAP Image/Dean Lewins

Should Jack de Belin, with all the distraction and his own pent-up frustration at being stood down from playing by the NRL, have been allowed to train with the first grade squad all year, especially when they were fighting to keep their season alive? What future does Jai Field have at the club?

And what of the back three, with the selection door revolving of Jordan Pereira, Jonus Pearson, Mikaele Ravalawa and Jason Saab?

They haven't handled losing the experience of Brett Morris and more recently Jason Nightingale.

Injuries a factor, but the gap between St George Illawarra's best and worst has been extraordinary this year. De Belin's ongoing court cases have had a huge impact, given his position as a State of Origin player, leader of the team song and conduit between the leadership group and younger players.

But on the field the Dragons have conceded 425 points, just six fewer than the Gold Coast, who already sacked Garth Brennan.

The choice between revolution and evolution might be shaped in the six weeks the Dragons have left.

Another red and white rag being waved to the true fans of this club.
We have been waiting for "Evolution" for 5 years without any joy.
Now it's time for "Revolution"
The handling of the De Belin drama was terrible.
Making assumptions about the court outcome.
Letting JDB mingle and be part of the squad.
I could go on and on but I want to point to 3 exerts in this journalistic anathema.
1. The author makes out that the fans have only recently "taken to the pitchforks..." in protest of the teams dismal performances.
The fact is that the fans have been consistently jacking up about McGregor since he was appointed.
2. "Bennett simplifies the game, raising the likelihood of immediate results"
Why is that portrayed and mentioned at all? Results is the only thing that matters and Bennett is a master at it.
McGregor also has a simple game plan but it's like playing poker while you can see your opponents cards.
3. "But on the field the Dragons have conceded 425 points, just six fewer than the Gold Coast, who already sacked Garth Brennan."
Forget all the other guff that this joker writes about, the crux of the issue is embedded in this statement of fact.
We are a shambles under McGregor and any NRL coach with his track record would have been sacked by any other club.
What are they waiting for?
As for this journalistic gem. It's exactly the sort of spin doctor crap we have come to expect of the Mercury.

That’s a neat and insightful reply to this utter garbage article incredibly suggesting that there is a realistic alternative other than the immediate sacking of Mary and his incompetent coaching staff.

It shows nothing but contempt of their readership to suggest that “ revolution is a mixed bag” when in reality the club is part way through a long and drawn out sickening process of rugby league suicide.

What more evidence do the sycophantic flag wavers in legacy media need than the near worst defensive effort of the league, consistent lack of effort, poor game management, the resting of key players in season-defining matches and worst of all, the hysterical and illogical torrent of excuses ranging from the regulation field being too long to harking back to historical success long forgotten and logically irrelevant.

It’s easy to blame jdb, and sure it had an impact, but if we are all honest, that impact was nowhere near enough to cause the self destructive and backwards chaos that has been 2019.

There has been no improvement, no learnings, nothing remotely constructive and absolutely no hope on the horizon. The whole club is in reverse and it’s actually speeding up. One step forward, six steps back. It’s a disease.

The only way to save the season and take anything out of it is to sack Mary and the coaching staff. Do it today. Get them into the office, hand them their letter, 1 minute exit interview, ask them for the keys to the building, give them half an hour to get their stuff and say good bye to the tea lady and janitor and march them out with a Tongan security escort.

Otherwise I hope the writer of this piece of garbage knows code.

A literary masterpiece which eloquently but bluntly summarizes our unfortunate predicament.
I enjoyed the read - thank you!

Inspired by your take on it, thank you.

I can’t for the life of me understand, in any way, why any other thread exists in this entire sgi forum except for this one.

I will say more.

If you love the club and you are coaching it and it is failing, you throw in the effing towel and give someone else a shot.

You don’t ponce about looking depressed and making excuses...for years, killing off your few remaining supporters.

You do the right thing, admit that for whatever reason, the results aren’t there under your leadership and you resign.

You don’t have to blame anyone, you just leave and people will respect you for that. Then you can say in future years that had you stayed, something better may have happened with you and the team you crafted.

But when you cling on and on and on and things get worse and you get summarily dumped and sacked, it’s all over. You are an embarrassment, you are humiliated and you lose respect. People think you are a complete tool and hopeless. You had your go on your own terms, you got everything you asked for and you blew it. And you were so arrogant you failed to see it and had to be dragged away.

So Mary, just stand up for the club and the supporters and fall on your effing rusting sword while you still can. Mercy is on her way out the door Mary. Grab her arm son, leave together. Don’t head into the future alone.

Don’t spend the rest of your life being regarded as a selfish fool who can’t coach. Better to be regarded as someone who wasn’t right at the time, recognised it and left with dignity.

A much better story for the rsl in a few years instead of years of resentment of truth tellers.
