Knights captain Kurt Gidley is expected to decide his future in the coming weeks

NEWCASTLE CEO Matt Gidley will sit down with brother Kurt and his manager George Mimis in the next fortnight to discuss the Knights captain’s playing future.
Speculation is growing Kurt Gidley is getting closer to announcing plans to end his career in England.
Out of respect for the veteran utility and his outstanding service to the club, the Knights are leaving it up to the skipper to make the call on his future beyond the end of this season.
Because of that, the club won’t force the issue even though it will impact on recruitment plans.
“I know Kurt’s been considering a whole range of options for next year but at this stage, I’m not really aware of where that is up to,” Matt Gidley said.
“With a long serving player like Kurt, and the same would go for anyone who has played as long as he has, you don’t want to be forcing them into doing anything that they haven’t considered appropriately.
“I think they have earned the right to be able to consider all their options without being forced into any decision and that is the stance the club has taken.
“We are certainly giving Kurt the opportunity to do that. I’m looking at discussing things with Kurt and his management at some stage in the next week or two.
“We spoke before the season started about Kurt’s plans and we all agreed that we would revisit that six or eight games into the season. That’s still the plan.”
Asked about the possibility of a stint in England before hanging up his boots, Matt Gidley said:
“He’s always expressed a desire to go over (to England) but he’s just wanted to get through the pre-season and the first part of the season and see how he’s feeling before making any decisions.”
Meanwhile, Gidley believes the form of centre Dane Gagai could potentially solve a selection headache for Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens if injuries rule out established Test stars for the clash with the Kiwis on Friday week.
“I know he is yet to play Origin but Dane’s in great form and he is just an outstanding competitor who would handle it easily if he was called on,” Gidley said.
“He was our best player by a fair distance against the Eels.”
