I appreciate everyones passion. We all have one thing in common - We love our team and want them to do well. I'm amazed that "fans" of a "team" would rubbish one of their own.

Interested to know how many on this forum have been involved in a team environment on a professional sporting or military level and still feel the need to hammer this bloke?

Personally I would never even think about bagging one of my own. A guy who lives , breaths and bleeds red and blue more than any arm chair critic wannabee keyboard punching nobody an a forum .

I would be very surprised if he was dropped , if he was going to be dropped he would of got the tap during his injury downtime. One of Australian sports greatest coaches has faith in the man and knows its more than just what he does on the field.

I would understand his selection if he added some intangibles to the team such as leadership, calmness, discipline or organisational skills, however he adds none of those things. I think people need to stop being so precious about who he is and actually judge him as Kurt Gidley the dummy half on $400k a year rather than Kurt Gidley the favourite son.
Let's analyse his skillset into categories like kicking, passing (from dummy half), dummy half running, vision, awareness, endurance, defence. Out of all those categories I'd argue he'd be below average in everyone single one of those, maybe a pass mark for defence and endurance but that's being kind.
Look at his intangibles, he'd be well below average in all those aspects, he's an ineffective leader as refs don't respect him and treat him like he's a petulant child, his discipline isn't great, he panics when his plan A isn't there for him and he's an extremely poor organiser as most team mates aren't even on the same page as him.
Does he have heart? Does he bleed red as blue? Does he try hard? Yes, most definitely but is that enough to make up for all the other attributes?

Great to see your input is right up there with your intellect - and your shoe size. Beaten up on the way home from school were we ? thought so...

I tend to agree on what you say regards the petulant attitude , it doesnt seem to sit well with the refs either. He does seem to panic I must admit. But I read time and time again coaches and team mates crediting him for what he brings to a team .,.. without being privileged to the inner sanctum of the team it does say something about the man. I mean this is a guy who is a walk up start in a utility role in the NSW SOO and Australian Test team when fit enough. Perhaps he just isnt what people are hoping him to be - a leader . He makes an excellent foot soldier.

He has shown he can be a good impact hooker, done so on numerous occasions at rep level and as mozza said his first stint last night was good. He needs to be moved to 14 and brought on for 15-20min stints and told to shovel the ball and run when there is space, nothing more.

The captaincy needs to be taken off him first though, he is suffering from the pressure and looks genuinely frustrated. It may be a bitter pill to swallow initially but it can only improve his game.

I think there is some poo coloured glasses being worn in this thread. He is capable of better and we have seen it. Its just a matter of providing the circumstances to bring it out again

One of the most intelligent things you have ever written  ....I agree 100 % :D

I think the thing he use to bring is energy, his energy was awesome at fullback because it meant he was a great general directing troops behind the line and his effort was awesome, in Rick Stone's game plan he was great as we played a more liberal brand of football, however let's not confuse 2011 with 2014, Bennett relies on a much more structured approach, much more conservative, Gids can't just run around look a chook with his head cut off, as a dummy half he needs to be able to read defences, organise numbers in attack and direct the attack somewhat, these things have never ever been his strengths hence why he was never really successful as a half. You couple that with his injuries and his age and it's just a massive hurdle he has to overcome. Sure he's got enthusiasm but he isn't as fleet of foot as he once was and his fitness isn't what it once was so that's probably his 2 biggest strengths and they've both been diminished. The role of the dummy half as also changed somewhat as well, it's a highly specialised position and it's a vital position, you simply can't play a utility there as your first choice dummy half anymore, look at the top dozen or so starting hookers in the comp and they're all specialists who have been groomed for years from a young age, we're trying to groom a 32 year old.

tbh I don't know why I'm bothering because you've made it abundantly clear you are a few sandwiches short of a picnic but...

He makes an excellent foot soldier.

Can you explain how he makes an excellent foot soldier?

His defence is pretty meh, he got destroyed by Josh McCrone against the Raiders. His ball distribution from dummy half is below average and his decision-making is probably worse. He doesn't make that many metres, he has given away a bunch of penalties lately. What exactly does he add to the team in 2014?

When they first contemplated his move to hooker I was quite excited, I thought his endurance would almost revolutionise the position abit, thought he'd be the everywhere man, make 50 tackles, lead the kick chase, come from nowhere to suppose the ball carrier, etc and I was hoping this would make up for his shortcomings in terms of skillset but he does none of the things I thought he would as in fact can't even play the full 80 minutes. I also thought his defence would be a big plus but he's pretty much been at fault 2 weeks in a row for conceding a try with shoddy marker defence.

Yeah, agreed. I thought he'd make a pretty good #9.

His defence is a bit of an enigma really. Some of the shots he put on last night were terrific, then he'd go and miss a howler.

He is coming back from a pretty long term injury which limited his off season some what. Perhaps he is a bit underdone? Who knows

By foot soldier I mean one of the cannon fodder and not in any play/decision making role. Time will tell. If he adds nothing Uncle Wayne will 1) punt him 2) greatly diminish his role.

It was interesting to watch last year after our win against the Storm that Gidely seemed quite remote from the other guys in the team, almost socially awkward and it made me wonder if he is feeling a little out of place and off the pace himself. The injuries he's had must be hard to come back from mentally.

There may be more to this story

He was a mess at Fullback in the time he played there against Penrith. I don't think that's his best position any more. He's a handy utility, in a dumbed down roll. He's not a starting hooker and he's not a fullback, both positions are pretty much extra halves these days.

Gids and aku were both massively improved today. Gids pass selection at times still worries me

Was good today. Looked pretty sharp but he needs to back his running game more. Hopefully he'll keep improving.
