i think he's changed eligibility for Australia and QLD in the leadup to last years 4N. he was considered for QLD this year and there was even a story saying his dad who serves in afghanistan had permission to fly back to watch josh if he was picked

i think thaiday said tongue in cheek a few months back anyone who has ever been to qld is eligible for qld. whilst origin is seen as the pinacle a lot of young kiwi's will still jump at the chance to play origin.

i don't know what it says about the fact that the kiwi jersey isn't valued to them, or why the kiwi league system isnt trying to persuade these kids to play for NZ. then again if kearney or meninga rang me i know who'd i'd be listening to....

Ummmmmm yeah I'd say it has a little more to do with the fact of $60,000 (soon to become at least $100,000) vs say $10,000 a year than Mal Maninga vs Stephen Kearney. The NZRL gets Ruben Wiki to talk to them anyway.

Tony Kemp doesn't do shit. He goes over to Australia for a week to talk to possible players and only goes and sees Jason Taumalolo. Useless. They do get Wiki to ring players up and go to those Junior camps though which is good.

do you really think that this works with every player though? benji was schooled in QLD, he could have easily declared himself eligible for QLD but didnt. players have also gone to play for NZ despite being born and raised in Aus as well (such as pritchard, nightingale, hoffman, covell ). if it were purely financial they'd be aiming for origin. Sure hoffman's down the pecking order if he were eligible for qld now but he will be one of the top fullbacks in the game in several years. Pritchard would have played for NSW if he decided to make himself eligible there as would nightingale

Sam Burgess only last night said whislt he'd love to play origin he'd never turn his back on England.

:?of course it doesn't work with every player, some guys don't put money above everything. But some players aka Tamou, possibly Kasiano obviously take the huge money available into account, I'm sure their managers have a bit to say to them about it as well.

Like I said, money plays a large role for a guy whos prossibly on the fence, and rightly or wrongly the amount of emphasis that is placed on origin as the 'pinnacle' of the game by the media. Lets say that the roles were reversed, origin was a one of game in April or at the end of the year, and Aus/Nz was a 3 match series during the middle of the season. There wouldn't even be a problem if that was the case. It's just the way it is with the way origin gets put in front of Test matches.

And comparing Burgess with Kasiano or even Tamou situation is ridiculous, Burgess had already played for England before moving to Australia for starters and he came to Aus when he was 20 odd years old. It's like if Matulino moved to a Aus club now and came out and said he doesn't want to play for Origin and wants to keep playing for the Kiwis.

So what exactly does "origin" refer to then? I was under the impression it was the state in which a player played in the junior grades but I might just be saying that because of the player bio things before the game. Obviously that could be a massive grey area anyway.
