Sam Tomkins: coming to an NRL club near you

Slater isn't as good as he was a couple years ago, couple years ago Slater was by far the best player in the world, he went through an extended form slump, his only just started to regain some good form and is playing pretty well so even the best go through rough patches.

Slater lost form due to a recurring knee injury and heavy workload. Tomkins is adjusting still to the NRL. In the ESL his extravagant footwork was enough but defences here are better. I think he will come good but can't ever see him being the best fullback in the comp.

He'll never be the best full back in the competition. But if he could improve his defence he could aim to become the 6th or 7th best next year.

Tomkins will never be better than Slater, Inglis, Hayne and Stewart. In 2015 Tuivasa-Sheck will also be a competitor. Dugan moving to centre, and Anthony Milford moving to five eighth at Brisbane, could raise Tomkins' ranking chances in 2015, but his main competitors for 6th-7th best will be Tedesco and Moylan.

The two leagues are very different, SL is quicker and more open. Coaches encourage players to take more risks with the ball as they know they are less likely to get punished for mistakes.

NRL is more defensive and slower PTB. Teams are very clinical and will hurt you if you turn the ball over in your own half leading to safety first RL on the whole.

Tomkins was a gun attacker in the SL as he was playing off the back of quicker PTB and retreating defences. He doesn;t have that luxury in NRL. What I do like is he is developing a very good passing game, almost playing as the warriors 5/8th on most sets. I can see his combinations getting better and better in seasons ahead. He does need to improve his 1:1 tackling though!

Considering there is supposeldy a massive quality difference we have seen plenty of big name NRL players go to SL and be terrible or at best avg.

1. Not sure it's quicker at all, just simply not as good.
2. Who are these big name players you refer to? Anyone who was still of significant value in the NRL - I see Asotasi mentioned above, but he's well past his best...

It's been going on for months, usually in the game threads whenever Tomkins doesn't walk on water. No I haven't seen you doing it specifically but it has been going on and it's always Panthers fans. I quoted your post only because you were the most recent one to mention it. Had no idea it was in response to a specific comment.

It's probably just Mr. Anonymous. He seems to have a hard on for seeing Tomkins do poorly for some reason.

But I'd say, in general and with no hint of bias, that most Panthers fans on this forum are pretty reasonable. A decade of doing bugger all keeps you humble.

Tomkins is a gun.

Would love to see how inglis, Hayne and slater would go being thrown into a team based away from friends and family and 0 known combinations in a competition a couple steps up from what they are used to with a massive amount of expectation for immediate success on their shoulders.

He is doing great from my perspective. Give him a season to get settled also there has been a change in coaches as well.

Slater is far and away the best fullback in the game even if you discount everything he does EXCEPT organise the defence, that alone separates him from the rest. If Tomkins could learn to organise and talk up the defence it would be enough to make his cost worthwhile. If the Warriors were listening out for him as Storm players do with Slater they would know better where he is and play to his strengths

Not saying slater isn't the best pops. I am saying if he went to a completely new club with 0 connections it would take him time to adjust. Ie to new combinations, what players to support and to stamp his authority within the team so players will listen to him so he can organise the Defence etc that doesn't happen overnight.

A reasonable person might think that a player having played in the ESL for so long, being more mature of age and having represented their country would put them in better stead to handle the NRL than the likes of Tedesco, Moylan, Milford, etc, all players which people do not feel the need to scramble out excuses for.

All of who have come through the NRL system and style of play since being 15. The leagues are played very differently, most of you probably don't watch SL on eurosport so your ignorance is excusable.

Nobodies saying SL is on par with the NRL, the vast money difference and jnr numbers would lead any logical person to see that but quality players are quality players. He is used to playing RL in a certain style and is still adjusting to a dfferent way the game is here. He is only getting knocked due to the Warriors being desperate enough to throw silly money at him.

Yes, silly us for thinking it'd be easier stepping up from being an international and star in the second best professional rugby league competition around than it would be to step up from an age capped competition or NSW cup.

I love how everyone making excuses for Tomkins gets all pompous and condescending, brilliant

best description I can think of for Tomkins was the one I thought of watching him play the donkeys. He is a mix between the duges and a new born giraffe. He has the ducking/weaving bouncing around type running style that beats defenders but really has trouble staying upright and falls over a lot in the process
