Sam Tomkins: coming to an NRL club near you

That is very true. I would say he has lived up to his value in the media in generating lots of hype for the Warriors. Just from a playing point of view the money could have been better spent. But as we have said, he has potential and could come very good. We will have to see.

I'll give you this - it's very hard to pass comment on a side you know jack shit about. Which is your situation with the Warriors.

We as Warriors fans are sick to death of explaining that the money we pay for a marquee player is irrelevant. We did not miss out on anyone by signing Sam Tomkins.

As for his form, I'll pay that it's been inconsistent. For about a month and a half from round 4-5, he was nigh on our best player. His link work with Johnson has been first-class, and thus freed up Hurrell to be damaging. His work under the high ball needs improving, as does his defensive work.

And you're the one struggling if you don't think professionalism and work ethic are worth a pinch of shit in a pay packet. May I offer you the names Blake Ferguson and in terms of our side, Kevin Locke as two examples.

I'll tell you for free, I'll take him over Zillman and Moylan.

Moylan has been better then Tomkins for probably a quarter of what Tomkins is costing you.

Matt Moylan is a decent player, no question. Tomkins is not playing like a 750k fullback but given time, may well do so.

We're winning games with this guy below his best. If he continues to work hard, adjust to his team-mates and the style of the competition, we'll win more games. Judging a rookie after half a season is unfair, and given how shithouse the ESL is most week it's unfair to do so with this guy either. Just because you slap a 750k pay packet on a guy doesn't make him instantly worth it. I doubt anyone at the club thought it would be a instant success from round one - only the fans with narrow vision did.

Our club knew we needed a game-breaking fullback to become a contender. We went out and got one we thought potentially could be that person. The next 2-3 seasons will decide whether it was successful, but I am happy with all my club has done in regards to this.

We could've sat on our hands and put up with Locke's unprofessionalism, Fisiahii's frail body or someone else. That wasn't deemed enough.

How many Panthers fans need to make this comment? It's like once Elliott got sacked they needed a new broken record.

Just responding to the above comment which I find stupid. Moylan has been better for what is likely more than half a million less then what Tomkins is on, he is younger too why wouldnt you swap? the hope the pommy will suddenly become a superstar?. If it is being said a lot its probably cause its true.

Ah ha, is that what started it? When was that quoted post. I've been wondering for some time what the Moylan - Tomkins fascination was with Panther fans. Found it a little weird/illogical and was curious about what/if something sparked it.

What are you talking about I have no obsession? I cant remember posting about Tomkins before this, I probably have but I havent been reading this thread for a while. I havent seen any panthers fans talking about Tomkins but if they do it has nothing to do with me.

The comment is the one above mine.

I care bugger all, I have to kill time at work somehow. May as well try and educate other fans that watching 3-4 games a year across the Tasman doesn't constitute knowledge of what we do.

Not while the 'big forwards' and 'Warrior ball' myths still abound!

It's an opinion. I'd rather have Tomkins. His performance ceiling is likely higher than Moylan's, and I don't give a shit what he's earning because the opportunity cost is basically non-existent.

It's an illogical comparison IMO.

Regardless of the competition Tomkins was an established international coming to a club that is constantly rejected by players despite offering overs.

Moylan is only just early into his career. Wait until he signs his next contract. I would suggest it won't be a quarter of what Tomkins is getting paid. It won't be 750k (unless the Raiders inflate his price) but it definitely won't chump change.

That would be like me laughing at Penrith for paying Idris a lot more than Hurrell when I know full well that if the Warriors want to keep Hurrell they'll be coughing up the dough next season when he comes off contract. Same if I compared McKendry to Matulino.

Every club has positions they need to fill and some clubs have to pay overs. Comparing it to someone who hasn't really been given a chance to sign a contract to match his market value is a poor comparison. Let's not forget that Tedesco was offered 900k after 9 first grade games, fullbacks are at a premium and Tomkins hasn't reached the heights all have hoped, but he's still an upgrade on what we had previously and is still better than being 750k under the salary cap for no reason.

It's been going on for months, usually in the game threads whenever Tomkins doesn't walk on water. No I haven't seen you doing it specifically but it has been going on and it's always Panthers fans. I quoted your post only because you were the most recent one to mention it. Had no idea it was in response to a specific comment.

Looked good in attack yesterday, I thought a lot of his involvement was pure class.

Certainly when you consider the $$ the Broncos have stumped up for Barba, Tomkins has been better.

He's 1 of the best 16 fbs in the world and so I'm happy he's in the NRL. He's just not elite level one of the best 5 or something. Don't know if he'd be better in the halves or if it's best for him to stay FB and try to improve.

I'm not judging him on this year. He's keen to get involved and with another off season and the combinations building, he'll certainly improve.

Not out of his depth, but just not hitting the heights he's used to.

Slater isn't as good as he was a couple years ago, couple years ago Slater was by far the best player in the world, he went through an extended form slump, his only just started to regain some good form and is playing pretty well so even the best go through rough patches.

The two leagues are very different, SL is quicker and more open. Coaches encourage players to take more risks with the ball as they know they are less likely to get punished for mistakes.

NRL is more defensive and slower PTB. Teams are very clinical and will hurt you if you turn the ball over in your own half leading to safety first RL on the whole.

Tomkins was a gun attacker in the SL as he was playing off the back of quicker PTB and retreating defences. He doesn;t have that luxury in NRL. What I do like is he is developing a very good passing game, almost playing as the warriors 5/8th on most sets. I can see his combinations getting better and better in seasons ahead. He does need to improve his 1:1 tackling though!

Considering there is supposeldy a massive quality difference we have seen plenty of big name NRL players go to SL and be terrible or at best avg.

Notably Roy Asotasi.
