Sam Tomkins: coming to an NRL club near you

The reason any side would need to pay big bucks for Tomkins is that he'll get similar offers from Union in England - his brother got a massive contract (compared to what he'd been on in SL), and he's frankly not that good. That's not necessarily the case with many other SL backs, and certainly not true for any forwards.

It seems that is only true for some clubs.

An appalling double standard.

schubert seems to make up rules when he wants

but would wigan release him to play union? if he were released could they include a clause saying if he came back to the SLE within his contracted time with wigan he'd have to join them, or even if he came back to the UK within that time? isnt this essentially what the dogs did with $bw release?

Him wanting to play and run the ball is the issue, because he doesn't do it that often. Jamie Soward is spectacular when he 'wants to run the ball' but the fact is that he doesnt do it that often, which means he isnt the best ball runner. While Hayne's quality might be marginally higher, Tomkins's quantity is worlds above Haynes.

What you're describing means he has a better work ethic than hayne, not that he's quicker or a better ball runner which was the claim.

Where's this million dollars a season talk coming from?

Surely it will be high figure but not around that.

We have cashed-up owners and currently operate well below the salary cap, which is also increasing for next season.
Overs mean nothing - it's all about what a particular player is worth to a particular club. While I know nothing of our actual offer to Tomkins, for argument's I'd rather we pay him $1 mil a season, than have that money sitting around doing nothing while we lose game after game.
The Warriors NEED a marquee player, preferably in the spine. We've made offers to Carney amongst others and had no luck. So with spare cash, we would be stupid not to spend whatever is required to get a guy like Tomkins.
As for his quality, IMO he's the best attacking player in the ESL by a long shot - both creatively and individually. At the appropriate salary and in the right position, Tomkins would walk into any NRL side. Still only 24 - could become anything.

Someone show Tomkins this thread, that will motivate him to cut his price, come to the NRL and shut a bunch of nuffie morons up!

This guy is easily 3rd best fullback behind Slater and Inglis and would walk into any NRL side except Storm/Souths. Can't wait for him to play here and leave all these clowns with their jaw on the floor.

I haven't seen much of him tbh, but as a Manly fan I don't think he would walk into our side either. If he is a half/fullback he is 100% not going to dislodge either Foran or DCE, and I would be extremely surprised if he dislodged Stewart from fullback. He's a Manly legend, and still producing quality displays. Tomkins may be better, I can't say, but I would bet my own life that he would not take over any of those players spot.

In general he should come. This is the best league comp in the world. The best attracts the best, so if he thinks he is as good as his asking price suggests then come down and prove it (but he won't get that million straight away, as numerous others have mentioned).

i imagine a large part of the $1M being banded around would constitute a transfer fee. There's a reason Wigan signed him up on a long term deal and placed a clause in his contract that he could not speak to NRL or Union until 2015

I actually think he would be quite successful. He has all the tools, a great passing game and has some awesome speed.

The ESL may not be as tough as the NRL, but there is a reason why the World Champs are usually an ESL club...the top 3-4 teams there are quite good and would go well against our best teams.

A lot of people ripping into Tompkins, as he apparently plays in an inferior competition.

It gets plyed over in England after their season has started and it is normally the NRL's club first or second pre-season game?

The WCC is played about 3 or 4 rounds in from the start of the ESL season and weeks before our season starts. Plus we do all the travelling.

I daresay if Wigan came over here and played Melbourne in Melbourne they would get flogged.

If not flogged at least comfortably beaten 8 out of 10 times.

So the NRL team has twice the number of weeks to prepare for it. What's your point? ;-)

Incidentally, Wigan are placed 3rd in the 15 year table, so Saints or Leeds might have been a better team for you to bag off.

I think the consensus between players and coaches that have actually experienced both leagues is that the top 4 or 5 european superleague teams could compete in the NRL. Given the success of the likes of Morley, Ellis and now Burgess and Graham, and that they came from top 5 sides, I don't see any evidence that Tomkins would be a failure.
