Season 2023

We should really have the better of both of those packs....but, we are the Tigers.....I'd take 1/1. Losing both would bite us on the ass this season.

GC have a lot of points in them.....but I saw no signs of them keeping points out either. I'd tip us in a tight one.

We really should beat Newcastle. That game will be the true test of the mentality of our team. A game we'd lose for sure over the last few years. This is the game I think every long time Wests Tigers fan would be worried about......deep down.

Against the Knights we can fairly expect that Hastings will be out to prove we made a mistake letting him go but of course the same goes for Klem !

6. Adam Doueihi
7. Luke Brooks
8. Stefano Utoikamanu
9. Apisai Koroisau
10. David Klemmer

Analysis: The Wests Tigers have a new look side going into 2023 with the inclusions of Isaiah Papali’I (Eels), Api Koroisau (Panthers), John Bateman (Wigan), David Klemmer (Knights) and the returning David Nofoaluma (Storm). All of these recruits are set to start in the club’s Round 1 fixture against the Titans. The merger club also saw a mass exodus of players last season with Luciano Leilua (Cowboys), Luke Garner (Panthers), Tyrone Peachey (Panthers), Kelma Tuilagi (Sea Eagles), Jacob Liddle (Dragons), Zane Musgrove (Dragons), Jock Madden (Broncos), James Tamou (Cowboys), Oliver Gildart (Dolphins) and Jackson Hastings (Knights) all departing Leichhardt. Tommy Talau is set to start in the centres after solid pre-season performances, alongside Brent Naden. Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi make up the halves pairing, with Stefano Uotikamanu, who was excellent for Sheens in both trials, packing in the front row alongside Klemmer. John Bateman will only arrive to his new club this week, but could be wheeled out come Round 1 with Papali’I taking the other backrow spot. The ever-reliable Joe Ofahengaue plays lock, with Koroisau at hooker and Jake Simpkin in the utility role. Shawn Blore, Alex Twal and Fonua Pole could round out the starting 17.

Pretty spot on 1-17. Maybe Tupou comes in for Staines so he can get more time at Fullback in reserve grade, but more than likely this will be the 17. I think Bateman might start on the bench to give him a bit of time to gel with the team, which would with Blore at right-side 2nd row. I really like Twal on the bench. He's not exactly an impact forward but as we start to get into the grind of the game he can come on and really get through a lot of work, leaving space for Stefano to come on at the back end of the game and provide impact to get us over the line when players are tired.

A lot of our success is going to depend on Brooks/Doeuihi form as a halves pair. I think our forwards are going to get the job done. What these two do with the go forward they provide is another question.

Haven't been this excited for a season in many many years

Just watched this highlights video of John Bateman. Probably everyone has seen it but man oh man it has got me super excited about this season and what is to come in the years ahead. Probably been said a thousand times but the Tigers have done an outstanding job of recruitment.

If you haven't seen this already enjoy.

Looks good, but I’ve a feeling the NRL defence may be a touch tougher?

Maybe. I also had a look at his highlights video when he played for Canberra. I know highlights reels are about 5 mins from lots of games but he did look good playing in the NRL.

Fingers crossed it works out well.

ENNIS: I really like their recruits and what they’ve brought to the club. Obviously the ‘05 band’s back together - Sheens, Marshall, Farah. They had a good energy about them, they had Chris Heighington, who’s a great connector. He’s a great clubman and he was back running the blue shirt for them at Belmore the other day. So they’ve brought some guys in there that know what success looks like at that club.

And then they’ve recruited guys, like Api Koroisau who I think’s going to be enormous for them, (Isaiah) Papali’i who’s a world-class back-rower, along with John Bateman who I think brings a real unorthodox, unpredictable, ferocious competitive edge to their back row.

My only question mark is ... what Koroisau was able to do for Daly Cherry-Evans at Manly and the pressure he took off him, what he instantly did for Nathan Cleary and Jerome Lui at Penrith. Can Brooks and Doueihi capitalise on what he does in the ruck? If they can and take their opportunities on the back of what he creates, then I think the Tigers certainly climb the ladder.

CRONK: Yeah, I don’t think they play finals but they get up the ladder. They’ll finish 10th, 11th, 12th, something around that mark. I won’t say 9th, Tigers fans.

I liked their performance in the last preseason game. Jeez, they were skilled and athletic. They were passing the ball and that whole mindset that Sheens, Farah and Benji have coached and played with was there to be seen. They were throwing the ball around, backing their skill - the execution of the pass was the best I’ve ever seen from the Tigers.

For them to actually reset the base, I think the example is the Cowboys. They slept and breathed defence, defence, defence all summer, and that’s the thing that’s shot them up the ladder.

Fox Lab predicted finish: 17th

Not sure how they have come to that conclusion?

I'm pretty sure they didn't factor in our new recruits and obviously none of the massive improvements seen in our last trial.
My personal computer ( my brain, which admittedly has some defects) has them in the finals.

Lol they spoke positively about our recruits, our mind change in regard to attack and coaching influence…then selected us to go back to back for the spoon?
lol this team won’t come last.
