Its was a good idea in 2018. Potentially stunts Cleary's development but gives us a much better chance at the title.

I can't make the argument after the performance of the spine in 2020. And again in 2021. Burton has no place in it.

That was the exact time when the comments were valid. Api coming here certainly took the side to the next level

We have a few over 30-40m that are pretty good. Over longer distances not so
30 or 40m is what counts though. The explosive short burst speed is the most important thing.

Id much rather a backline full of blokes who were lighting to 40 rather than a gradual builder over 100.

The majority of nrl tries are scored in your attacking 40. Suggests that if you have the explosive speed to burn someone you should be quick enough to get to the line.

How is that any different to the 2021 season when we had a flat period then went on to win the prem?

Look at our halves during Origin for example. Neither are at the club still
Burton in 2020
Naden in 2021 while not playing were training. The younger guys we have coming in now haven't
Sorensen and Momo came to the club from top 8 sides. In Momo's case the premiers
Compare that to the 2 signings we have that couldn't get regular footy at the basket cases that was the Dogs

Cowboys, Storm have both in recent times got back in the GF after a down year. I am by no way saying we will be a 1 season wonder like the Sharks or Souths have been.

I am not down playing the short burst but all part of continuing to develop as a side. Generally teams tighten up closer to the line. Things like having 1 marker or a fullback defending in the line

That is what the Storm did so well. I thought they looked ordinary inside the 20 but their counter attack was awesome. If we can add that to our ability to get repeat sets etc. Then we will be a very dangerous team

More reports today that oates is on the outer.

I think if broncs were gunna chip in some of his contract itd be worth a 12 month punt.

Can obviuosly play wing at a high level. Amd id like to see him at 2nd row.

Reports saying kevvie is going to pick jordan pereira over him on the wing haha. I like kevvie but hes delusional if he thinks pereira is even close to oates league. Theres clearly issues there.

Id back ivan to be able to transform oates into a good 2nd rower.

He is the sort of guy Ivan has had success with.

The cheaper we can replace Kiks with the more we have to get a quality 9 with.

9's are crucial to a teams success

Why does it matter? We lost most our games during Origin when Cleary was out with Burton playing. Lost to the Tigers, lost to the Sharks, in the win against the Warriors Burton was quiet and May was the half doing the attack.
I think Yeo missed all the Origin period games we lost and played all the post ones we won so I think that was it more that than anything.

Yep only have to look at blokes like capewell and sorensen.

Ivan really brought out the best in them. Even eiso was strong at times.

The reality is i dont think lindsay smith has the lateral mobility to play on an edge, hopgood maybe but he really is a middle too.

I think sorensen is a good enough mover to cover there as is tago but it appears hell be centre.

Well need another 2nd rower imo.

I think Lindsay Smith could just develop into our version of Christian Welch. Just turned 22, similar height and weight, huge motor if he continues to develop he could becime equally as good. This season is an important season for him and I expect him to play a lot games for us. Still a year or two off but I expect him to become a high quality NRL player. He is a front rower not an edge forward.

Jesse McLean named in the centres so he has obviously overcome his injury in the trials a couple of weeks back.

We look light this year so certainly need to bring someone in for Kikau. With no stand out options we can afford to bring in a couple of good players with the hope to turn someone into a great player.

I am one that thinks Tago long term is a backrower. He might be too good at centre or guys like May or Jenkins not come on. So a 2nd rower looks a must

Who makes way for him to regular minutes in the middle?

Welch has a mental attitude I don't know how much you can train. To be the one go out and put pressure sprint to the kicker when everyone's tired and no one wants to sprint that 10 metres. That's the kinda guy he is, Bellamy called him the best at inside pressure in the game. I dunno if I can see if any young middle forward who has that kinda 1%er attributes to him like Welch does that separate him from the other toilers.

I still think one of Ivans massive weaknesses is his use of the bench.

There were soo many times last year blokes like yeo and fish were absolutey out on their feet with nothing left in the tank and he wouldnt bring fresh guys on. Or hed bring on spencer for 8mins.

Ivan needs to trust the bench guys. Yes, yeo and fish need to play bigger mins but i think theres definitely room to spread the mins round.

I think if chris smith is fit, ivan might go a bench of-
Kenny
Spencer
Sorensen
C Smith

Kenny cover hooker and lock
Spencer front row
Sorensen front or second row
Chris Smith to cover 2nd row

If we were to get an injury in the backs kenny would have to shuffle out. Not ideal but hes very fit and a good defender so should be manageable even if its completley different defending wider.

Blokes like hopgood and lindsay smith might have to continue to bide their time. Id pick them over c smith if they could play an edge but they are both really middle specials whereas c smith has always been an edgs backrower.

Rewlly hope he can get an injury free run. Interested to see how riki goes too. Havent heard much.

It is the rules. Not the coaches they need to keep interchanges for if someone gets injured. As a result you really only use 15. often someone gets very limited time

Unless someone like O'Sullivan goes ok in other positions then that seems like the likely bench.

Sorensen possibly is a backrower but I liked him in the middle with the quick play the balls and the tempo.

That is why I would in NSW Cup play those guys out wide. No harm if they can't do it and we aren't losing anything anyway.

If Martin gets an SOO call up or struggles playing wide then the extra options is good. A cheap replacement for Kiks next year too. Tago may not be possible to move to the backrow.

Welch is the best non enforcer prop in the game.

Him going off really assisted us in the prelim. We still likely win but he was a massive loss.

He's to Melbourne's pack what Yeo us to us. The brains in the middle of the field.
