Phil Gould ‏@gusgould91 Panthers confirm the signing of James Segeyaro to a new 3 year deal .. Very excited to have James joining our club in 2013 .. #pantherpride
MASSIVE. Can't believe the Cowboys let him go. He's by far the best hooker they have. Cowboys will be poorer for it.

He's just 21. His best days are ahead of him.

Can't believe they let him go for the 29 year old Payne. Payne should have been released every day of the week ahead of a gem like Segeyaro.

IMO this will go down as an excellent buy for Penrith. The Cowboys will look back to rue this day.

Penrith claim to be having salary cap issues (part of the whole Jennings debacle) yet they're on quite a spending spree at the moment. Whare, Manu and now Segayaro have been annouced in the last few weeks.

That was clearly bullshit designed to get concessions out of the NRL. That failed so now they're showing they have the space to make moves.

Pretty sure they wanted cap relief for their second tier cap because of injury and player releases.

Stop whinging.

Isn't he out for the year anyway? Massive impact on his mental state before tonights game.

I'd be pretty devo if I was signing for Penrith.

Seriously though, it's well known that Chicko is a team favourite. They could've chosen any other time but decide now.

FMD. The Panthers wanted to create room for this year, as with the current injury crisis they are unable to call up any new players from their reserves as this would activate performance clauses in their contracts which would tip them over this years cap.

They were trying to get released players removed from this years cap (they don't count towards next years) so they could call up players.

There is a second issue that by 2014, only a few of their players will be taking up a lot of cap room, hence the trying to offload Jennings saga.

There is no issue with next years cap as the released players will not count towards that year.

As for the Cowboys, you would assume that due to the fact that they have a forward pack filled with representative players, including one of the (if not the) best props in the competition, they will have to offload players.

It was leaked earlier today as well. I doubt gus would have announced it officially until later in the weekend if his hand hadn't been forced. Worst kept secret in league anyway.

Great signing by Penrith. For the Cows, where to now? Ballin?

Ballin isn't going to go live in Townsville. That's a major problem they face in recruitment and retention.

Canberra is similar but at least its close to Sydney.
