it's almost like pre paying a few years of sponsorship money up front.

Clearer communication up front would have helped

Exactly mate...

In any case, it looks like it's a pretty good deal all around.
A great deal for the Steelers, a bad one for St George Illawarra.

The Dragons lose potential profits every game they play at WIN, now the Steelers Club get a 6 million dollar gift to ensure we continue to play there.

Reading between the lines, it does appear that St George were finding it harder and harder to sustain Illawarra financially.

What with the pokey tax and the Wollongong Trust haggling over their cut, the money has to come from somewhere. Plus there was the fact Saints had an alternative to WIN... Kogarah. Call it leverage if you like but the bottom line is that it is cheaper for Saints to play at Kogarah.

I imagine the pitch to WIN would have been pretty straight forward and along those lines. That is, 'do you want the Dragons playing in Wollongong? If so, you have to buy in'.

Being an interested party, WIN no doubt saw a loss coming their way if Saints played less games in Wollongong.

$6 million isnt that much when you consider that they've bought themselves guaranteed revenue for the next six seasons.

WIN Corporation is a billion dollar company that owns 40% of Channel 9 Perth, 5% of Channel 10 and 1.5% of PBL. It can without too much trouble afford to also own a quarter (or an eighth?) of St. George Illawarra.

Yeah I'm aware they have deep pockets. $6 million is akin to Jed Clampett's carry around money. I don't think they wanted to see part of their heartland revenue lost for the sake of a few quid.

My thoughts pretty much exactly.

IMO a wasted opportunity to cut out the middle man and deal directly with the South Coast Region. How lucky the Steelers are to have such a benign partner in St George.

Lets face it, the way the NRL is heading all teams will be privatised in the furture anyway! So we are just getting a head start! and lets face it, if WIN are happy to put in some money then we should be happy and take it! Cause any help at the moment is good help, would be soo much better if the salary cap was changed, but yeah!
