Eels star Semi Radradra could play for NSW Blues and Kangaroos if rule changes are agreed
Phil Rothfield Sports Editor-at-Large
THE push is on for Parramatta Eels superstar Semi Radradra to play for both the NSW Blues and Australia’s Kangaroos this year, despite his Fijian heritage.
As the rules currently stand, the blockbusting winger can play for Australia because he has been in the country for three years but not NSW because he didn’t play rugby league in the state before the age of 13.
The qualification rules however don’t take into account rugby union converts like Radradra who played his first football in Australia in Parramatta’s Holden Cup team.
Four years ago the Origin qualification rules were overhauled by a committee involving Immortal Bob Fulton, super coach Wayne Bennett and then Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens.
Fulton revealed players like the Eels superstar who converted from union were never taken into consideration when the selection criteria was last revamped.
“It’s time we reassessed the rule,” Fulton said.
“If you have a rugby union convert from another country like Semi, it needs to be looked at.
“Especially now he has been here for three years, he’s an Australian resident, and he’s eligible to play for Australia.”
No other sport on the planet has such ludicrous stipulations around the selection criteria where a player can play for his country yet not his state.
Semi Radradra could be tearing it up for the Blues in Origin.
The game that has allowed:
# Greg Inglis, born and bred in Macksville, to play 27 games for QLD.
# Petero Civoniceva, a Fijian, to play 31 games for QLD.
# And Adrian Lam, born in Papua New Guinea, both play and captain the Maroons.
On current form, Radradra is clearly the best winger in the World and was named Dally M winger of the year last season.
He would have no problems forcing his way into the Australian or Blues teams on what he has produced over the last two years for Parramatta. Certainly ahead of the likes of Will Hopoate and Alex Johnston who were chosen for NSW and Australia last year.
Radradra was snatched out of rugby union sevens where he was representing Fiji by Parramatta Eels talent scouts in 2012.
On Friday night against the Bulldogs he set up a sensational try for Michael Jennings and scored two himself.
