Shaun Kenny-Dowall not guilty of assaulting former partner Jess Peris

I assume the money paid to Peris by the Roosters in the form of a vehicle and whatever else has been reported to the NRL and is included in their salary cap ?

If this was Parra who did this, there would be salary cap auditors going through every filing cabinet in the joint.

No money was paid to her. She demanded 6 months rent and vehicle, they offered to help her out for a month while she found another place and she knocked it back then went to the cops.

This is how the ABC news website are reporting it -

Shaun Kenny-Dowall: Sydney Roosters player cleared of domestic violence charges against Jessica Peris

By the National Reporting Team's Natasha Robinson
Updated 29 minutes ago

Sydney Roosters star Shaun Kenny-Dowall has been cleared of domestic violence charges against his former partner Jessica Peris.

Magistrate Gregory Grogin handed down his verdict in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court following a three-day trial last week.

Kenny-Dowall, a star centre for the Roosters, was charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and six counts of common assault.

Kenny-Dowall had also faced charges of stalking and intimidation, using a carriage service to menace and harass, and malicious damage to Ms Peris's mobile phone.

The assaults were alleged to have occurred between October 2014 and June 2015.

He was found not guilty of all 11 charges.

But the magistrate found the couple had regularly engaged in mutually abusive text message exchanges.

The magistrate was highly critical of Ms Peris and said her evidence in court was "calculated, evasive and intentionally framed".

"I did not find her to be an entirely truthful witness," Magistrate Grogin said.

Ms Peris was not in court for the verdict.

Magistrate Grogin found Kenny-Dowall, who fought back tears in court as the verdict was delivered, was a man of good character.

The verdict came after Kenny-Dowall denied he had ever assaulted Ms Peris and testified that he believed violence against women was "completely unacceptable".

Ms Peris, the daughter of federal senator and Olympian Nova Peris, came under intense pressure in the witness box as her credibility was questioned by Ian Temby QC, the top barrister hired by Kenny-Dowall.

Mr Temby alleged in his closing submissions Ms Peris had filed the domestic violence complaint after being rebuffed by the Roosters rugby league club when she sought support following the break-up of her relationship with Kenny-Dowall.

It emerged during the hearing that Ms Peris had approached then-Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan, pleading with the club to take a stand on domestic violence and to support her with six months of accommodation and one month's income after the split with Kenny-Dowall.

Mr Grogin said he found it "highly unusual" that Ms Peris had initially complained to the Roosters rather than police and said it adversely affected her credibility.

The magistrate described the approach to the club as "opportunistic and deceitful".

The couple's intimate text message exchanges and family finances also came under intense scrutiny during the case, which heard details of Kenny-Dowall paying Ms Peris a salary for helping him set up a cafe with cash that Ms Peris alleged came from a brown paper bag of $100 notes.

Ms Peris attempted to give evidence about the brown paper bag of cash during the case, but was prevented by the magistrate, who declared the issue irrelevant.

Kenny-Dowall will now enter the 2016 rugby league season with his name cleared.
As soon as I heard Peris had approached the Roosters seeking them to disciplne SKD instead of going to the police, and then asked them for money I thought this story started sounding fishy. Looks like the Magistrate agreed.

Sounds like justice was served. This is why there should be a calmer reaction when players are accused of a crime. Accused is not the same as committed.

We dont need high profile figures such as the premier of NSW dipping his little wick in before a player has his day in court.

Not guilty doesn't mean he's innocent!

But in all seriousness looks like the right decision made here.

This is why you don't stick your dick in crazy. He should be getting a public apology from her, Baird, Bourbon Becs and whoever else publicly shamed him.

It would only be fair, but based on Brett Stewart's treatment, SKD is never gonna get any kind of an apology from anyone.

Really feel for SKD to be honest. Dragged his name through the mud for failing to bribe his club.

Can't stand the Chooks at all, but kudos to them for not getting involved in anything untoward, ultimately helped SKD out.

I doubt he'll get an apology from anyone if previous incidents are any indication.

I would settle for some of the usual suspects just learning to wait until court proceedings are complete before deeming someone guilty however I don't think we are going to see that either.

You can just about guarantee that as soon as another situation like this pops up involving an NRL player, the usual suspects will have the knives out again. While their is no penalty for certain people in the media jumping to conclusions then these same people will never learn.

I notice more and more when I go out with different groups of friends that people casually make comments about NRL players all being a bunch of rapists, woman bashers etc without much basis. No doubt there have been a few legit bad incidents over the years but it's over-the-top coverage of these kind of cases as well that drives that perception in the general public. It's so sad that a guy like SKD can have his name so badly tarnished

A reminder of Rebecca Wilson’s article from July last year .

THE NRL and its clubs make a huge show of their Women in League round and their support for White Ribbon Day.
Today they have a chance to take a genuine stand against domestic abuse allegations and to leave no doubt they view these charges seriously.
The Roosters must take Shaun Kenny-Dowall off their player roster until all of the 10 charges against him are heard.
The sheer breadth of those allegations must be enough to sound alarm bells.
A moral judgment must be made.
While there is no debate about the legal system always asserting the innocence of the charged, Kenny-Dowall has already brought the game into disrepute.
These are not insignificant charges; they are serious and deserve serious attention.
It is now time for NRL boss Dave Smith and Roosters chairman Nick Politis to act.
Stand the player down until further notice or face your own allegations of weakness and double standards
So many times we have sat back and allowed superstars the benefit of the doubt.
We have excused their anti-social behaviour and violence against women because a club “needs” its stars to win competitions.
The line in the sand can be drawn today.
Sideline Kenny-Dowall, counsel him, but don’t excuse him because he is a star.

Hopefully he sues the shut out of her now. Would like to see him win big for the shit she dragged him through

Absolutely. Not for any financial compensation as she seemingly has nothing to give but to set a high profile precedent to anyone else thinking of making similar wrongful allegations. This kind of behaviour is a major setback to legitimate domestic violence victims and its lobby group. They should be the loudest in condemning her vile actions but suspect we won't hear a word.

The Roosters should demand an apology from the likes of Baird and Rebecca Wilson and other opportustic, agenda driven morons who wanted to bury an innocent man. In a case like this without any clear evidence you cannot stand people down.

Happy for SKD

Thanks for posting. A timely reminder of what a disgrace she is.

She says "skd has already brought the game into disrepute".

So simply accusing someone a week out from a gf should be enough to see them gone. Idiot.

Absolutely. A close friend of mine is going through the process with her ex-partner after 6 months of stalking, intimidation and threats towards herself and her family. Fortunately there is overwhelming evidence against the piece of sh*t but it took 5 or 6 call outs for the police to get interested and it?s due partly to d*ckheads like Peris abusing the system. She should suffer some sort of repercussions for what she?s done.
