Bennett would have moved for the Tinkler cash regardless - you don't tie up a guy like Bennett...he does what he wants...ever moreso in wake of the Dragons success under him

Bennett signed with the Saints until "the job is done" were his words. That is until he got us back to the glory days and won us 2 Minor premierships, a premiership and a World Club challenge. It's not his fault he inherited a team that good (thanks to Browny which he gets no credit sometimes) that he did it in 2 years. If they were still without a Premiership I am sure he would still be coaching the Saints. Bennett would not have signed on longer because he achieved what he wanted to simple as that.

From the best coach they went on to the worst coach to return us to the bad days which I have never seen to often where we are a laughiung stock and teams just need to score 3 tries to win because the Saints are not capable of scoring more than that.

Soward is a great example of how good a coach Bennett is because to think we won a premiership with him at 7 is a huge achievement and only 1 that Bennett could do. Maybe Cleary can bring out the best in Soward as well. Time will tell.

Bennett had a better offer from us than $tinklercastle so that part is irrelevant.

T.

ahh where did you hear that? Our offer was competitive by all reports but...this is a whole different kettle of fish w Tinkler...no way we could compete with the money / perks he was throwing at the time. An offer he can't refuse...

I remember Bennett himself refuting a journalists claim that he went to the Knights for the cash. He said something along the lines of, "if I wanted a job for the money I would of stayed at the Dragons". Which implies to me that the Dragons actually offered him more clams than the Knights. But as others have said, It's all in the past now anyway.
Here's a link a direct quote from the man.
Well I'm going to tell you something that might surprise you. The best offer I got when I was tossing up leaving the Dragons was from the Dragons.

I was at a Sports Luncheon that Wayne Bennett spoke at just before he left the Dragons and he stated "The highest offer he received was from the Dragons" . He has now moved on, and so should we.

I'd consider Jim Dymock in the mix as well
326 games of first grade or rep footy including 6 Origins and 6 Tests
His Brief coaching record is around 65%
He played equally well at 5/8 and Lock and they didn't come too much tougher
Definitely worth a year's trial with options in our favour in place of Price

i never rated Dymock as a "smart" footballer.. to me he relied more on his physical abilities and i dont know that skillset translates well to a coach.
i could be wrong of course.... but i think there are better options than Dymock

If we add all the threads about getting rid of Price it would surely create some sort of record.
It goes to show that all we really want is a new coach
Please Doust make this happen

Which is why it is boring when someone brings up sack Price thing all the time ,I would like to see him replaced ,let's keep it interesting.

Phil, I did say I was finished with this topic, but read this from Drain the Dragon's post.

http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/634818/peter-doust-defends-wayne-bennett-contract-decision/

Ha all good and fair enough! Well he flatly denied that in the Red V forum this year.

The below was how Dousty roughly phrased it on the night

"I don't know if it's about that, to be honest with you. You form a relationship with someone like Wayne and it's a mutual relationship. If he, no matter how many years he signed for, wanted to do something different or we wanted to do something different, it wouldn't be a problem."Terms of contracts aren't important to people like him.
