You repeatedly glance over the main reason people are pissed off at Newton. He was not wanted NEXT SEASON. Just to reinforce that point: NEXT SEASON.

There are dozens and dozens of players every year told by their coaches that their services are not required in the future. How many pack up their bags and leave 11 rounds into the season? Piss all!

And THEY are TRUE clubmen ........unlike Sooky pants newton

Newton left because 1. he felt unappreciated by the club and 2. he couldn't get along with Smith. Why else would he want/need to leave?

What do you expect from a bloke who was not even shown the decency of a new contract offer, and to boot was told he is not needed by the club.

If you think that's fair trade for a fair player, you need to lift the sunglasses bloke.

Newton has walked away from his contract - and as far as i can tell he could only do that because the club can't really get into a public slanging match with the high profile and very popular Newton family.
If Woolnough comes out today and says he doesn't intend honouring his contract either - the club will quite rightly sue his arse off.

Ahh, maybe the same as Woolnough who copped it on the chin??? Or for that matter, every other bloke who isn't wanted by their club!

And can you please answer this for me: is it more insulting for the club to offer Newton no contract at all, or to offer him a contract that is a fraction of what he is worth on the open market?

Your attitude towards Newton is exactly the reason that Smith was brought to the club. We don't owe Newton a contract- they are earned by the players, and unfortunately form meant that he was seen as being expendable. The 'old boys' mentality that you seem to adhere to is finally being wiped out of the club.

Listen to the news mate. ABCRadio, 2GB, FoxSports, NineNews all said it.

Newton has been told by Smith he would not be needed by the club for next season. Newton is now looking at offers from rival clubs.

My argument is not how it was done, or by whom.

But to blame Newton for being put in a position that required him to look at other options for his career is crazy. If we are going to sack him, fine, but don't blame Newton for going into defence mode when he can't get along with Smith.

You say contracts are earned mate... I agree.

Newton is a clubman who would happliely have played out his career at the Knights if given a new contract. He is there for us week-in, week-out, and is a player we can count on in his own right. If that is not deserved of a new contract or at least the honor of not getting bagged by blokes on forums, I don't know what is.

Lets get this bit clear- Newton would not stay at the club if the money he was offered elsewhere was significantly more. Newcastle didn't see the value in retaining his services when there were juniors coming through the system who could do an equal job for a fraction of the price. They could have easily offered Newton an undervalued contract only to have him say "Thanks, but no thanks" and accept a deal elsewhere, but it would have been far more insulting to him to do so. You can't go around offering a rubbish contract to a player when you know they would have no intention of ever accepting it.

Smith had the decency to take Newton aside and advise him to seriously look at offers from other clubs, and Newton has seen this as the ultimate betrayal.

At the end of the day it boils down to one simple matter- the club do not owe Newton a new contract based on the fact that he is a local and great clubman*.

* I now use this term very lightly

Pika, from what I can see, your basing your facts on Smith's media conference alone. Smith is known for smoothing over the facts. What happened behind closed doors is another matter. When the news broke, it was simple: Clint Newton has been told by Brian Smith that he is not needed for next year. Newton is now looking at offers from _____ (insert clubs names here).

Oh, and mac, you are a funny bastard and that's sincere mate. But I don't appreciate your harsh words. Why is it, that a civil disagreement cannot exist on these forums?

If you look closely at all the media, you will not find Clint quoting "I was told I was not needed by the Club"

Most of the things Clint stated were about his feeling, and how he perceived what was said. I can understand why he felt this way.

Yet when you look at Smiths media releases, he is very clear in saying "I said this...." or "I told him......."

So based on what we have available, Smith making quotes of what was said, and Clint relaying how he felt, I think its fair to say Clint was never actaully told he had no place for 2008.

That said, it is understandable how he made his conclusions.

CJ - you are wrong. Walk away and stop looking more foolish.

Newton has said a number of times he has no issue with Smith. He was asked direct at his press conference whether there was a fallout with Smith and he said "Not on my side". He even complimented Smith today.

Smith has said has no issue with Newton. So can we PLEASE let go of the supposed fallout between the two?

Newton jumped ship because:

1. He wasn't offered a contract when he asked for it. His ego took a dent when he realised he might just be dispensible to the club. The club has said that they have not started offering contracts and he left on his terms rather than being told later on he wasn't required; and

2. He could see a premiership happening in Melbourne and sold out his club, his fans and his mates for the possibility.

Justice would see him get injured (hopefully by being smashed in the game against the Knights) and miss the big day. F*** him.

Also, the club should be reviewing their relationship with Jack Newton. He again said in todays Telegraph that he could not understand why the Knights sacked him. He wasn't sacked!

So because he wasn't offered a new contract, its all well and good to jump ship midway through the season? Thats ludicrous! The club owes Newton nothing, its Newton that owes the club. He's underperformed for many years and whats worse has been overpaid for it.
If he was a clubman he would of played out the year and swallowed his pride.

If the club wanted him to stay, they wouldn't have let him go I say, why would they if they had interest in him next year. To say they did it in his best interest makes the club look like the good guys, but you can read alot into it and we all know how Newto read into it. Brian is bringing in lots of new players and its mid year, that would be intimidating, if it was your livelyhood sometimes you have to make the choices which benefit yourself first.

See, I told you all that CJ was an absolute moron. I'm glad that you all can see it now :D

FTR, yes, we should be ticked off with Newton, as he's an absolute prick. You know what I would love...for us to sign Ashton Sims, and for Sims to deliver a nice elbow to Newtons face. Yes, Sims would be suspended, but god it would be so worth it :D
