Should we keep Cayless?

....and how many of those 18 games was he in peek form?

Just as he starts hitting form/fitness he's injured or suspended. For mine he seems to always get injured or suspended at horrible times...i'll save my judgement till this time next year and see where we're at then. Another year like the last 2 and i'd seriously consider asking him to stay on a massively reduced contract or look elsewhere.

Perhaps he could shop himself around with Vella in that case.

Keep Cayless ( put clauses in his contract re: injuries and suspensions)
Hindmarsh (Don't ask stupid questions)
Vella (I wouldn't feed him)
Vaealiki (needs to lift next year, or see vella comment.)
Wagon( If we get Morrison, release him)
Lyon( His name makes me want to vomit)

* Should we keep Hindy? He was out for essentially the whole season 2 years ago and is never available for our cunch matches come Origin time

* Should we keep Burt? He missed most of last season and hasn't found his best form

* Should we keep Grothe? He's been injured too long

* Should we keep Cannings? He's gardly played

* Should we keep Dykes?

* Should we keep Vaealiki?

Point is, every player gets a bad injury. It is, after all, a contact sport. And forwards are even more likely to get seriosuly injured. But you've got to repay the faith.

I am certain that if Freshy trains his arse off in the off season and gets plenty of good quality ball next year he'll be devastating.

Cayless will hel, have the off season and a few games this year to get fit and heal his arm properly and will be back next year.

I'd rather he didn't et injured every year, but meh - it happens.

Cayless, whatever his future holds, is already an Eel legend.

If he's an Eels legend then he deserves to have the right to finish his career here.

And that should be up to him. And if Parra offer him say 200k, and another team offers him twice, are we scum? No.

A player is worth what they can contribute on the field. We offered Sterlo and Burt a combined half mil per season in 90, from 1 $1.3 mil salary cap. because of sentiment, they ate up almost half the cap between them. ANd they were both past rep footy, and Sterlo was injured for half the time. Great players - club legends - bad investments.

* Should we keep Hindy? Definately- he made an impact when he came back last year...plays way more games than he misses and is one of the best forwards in the game

* Should we keep Burt? No He's Shit

* Should we keep Grothe? Yes...he goes alright when he's out there

* Should we keep Cannings? He's only had 1 injury so far

* Should we keep Dykes? Arguable- Given our depth in the halves (or lack of) Yes

* Should we keep Vaealiki? Yep- Only had 1 injury also

Cayless wouldn't even be in the top 20 forwards in the game at the moment- next year is make or break (no pun intended) for his his career I feel.

I was just making a point.

All these players are quality players. Yes, EVEN Burt - you saw how well he played at fullback and in the 7's. He is a great gap runner.

In fact, if Dykes crabs looking for gaps, why can't someone tell Burty to cut inside at an angle? It would be a lethal attacking move for us.

Quality players suffer injuries, because they go hard and do their best.

Unfortunately Caylo is injured, but at least we have good enough depth.

Had Caylo not gotten injured, we may not have seen the likes of JAck Afamasaga, who I think will be a HUGE star.

Yeah, you're right dude, our depth is amazing. I don't know why people bag us. When you can replace Cayless with the likes of Pearson, Stapleton and AFamasaga and they perform just as well, we must be loaded.

Either that or the original is underperforming...which is probably more likely in this case.

Hmm... Subtle.

Anyway:

* Pearson is a dud.

* Stapleton is a good fron-rower, not a second-rower.

* Afamasaga has been dynamite. Great go-forward, quite a bit of pace, aggression, strong defence. Great prospect.

But you must admit - our second-row pairing of Hindmarsh and Cayless sharing the defensive and offensive duties looked really sharp, before Caylo got injured.

Injury-free he is within the top 10 best forwards there are. DEFINITELY.

We've offered substantially reduced contracts to players in recent seasons - they've got bigger offers elsewhere and bolted (eg Hodgson, Ryan, Tonga, Hindmarsh, Drew) - AND THEN we've been hammered over our retention policy  ....of these Ian Hindy was the only one who wasn't either: out of form, had an injury plagued season, never cracked the big time anyway).

He stays for sure, but there's some valid points in this thread.

Nathan Cayless needs a strong injury/suspension free year next year to receive a contract offer of the same amount, in my opinion. He's still a great player, and still a national rep when fit and available, but he's only worth it if he's on the paddock.

I have the following first grade players down as being off-contract at the end of the 2005 season:
Armit, Cayless, Dykes, Hindmarsh, Morris, Muckert, Petersen, Vaealiki, Vella, Wagon, Widders, as well as Afamagasa, Anderson, Moi Moi, O'Dwyer, Tim Smith.

You just rank them in priority order, make offers, and see what sticks. At end 2005 I would see Hindmarsh, Armit, Morris, Afamagasa, Anderson, O'Dwyer and Smith as the priorities for the future. At another year older, I would think Vella, Wagon, Cayless, and Vaealiki, as likely to receive less offers than their current contracts - unless one of them plays out of their skin in 2005. I really hope Cayless does have a strong uninterrupted year!

So the two Nathans can easily stay within our cap. Widders, Muckert, Petersen and Moi Moi would only get re-signed then if they have strong years and develop their potential further. And Dykes  if not earlier...

if Cayless (on the field and fit) is not in the top 20 forwards in the game.....i give up

i rank him third (in terms of all round best forwards, no matter the position) behind only Shane Webcke and Nathan Hindmarsh........

i know i'm biased, but if i had to pick a forward pack from the entire comp, those three would be in it....put it that way

I'll name you 20 now I'd go with over Cayless based on his form of the past two seasons- which is why I think next year is crucial for him. We couldn't afford to have him on the back of 3 straight bad seasons.

Webcke
Ryles
O'Meley
Civoniceva
Puletua
Gulavao
Skandalis
Luke Bailey
Morley
Jason Cayless
Andrew Ryan
Wiki
Price
Kite
Kennedy
Tallis
Lang
Clinton
Nutley
Stevens

Tell me which of the above 20 haven't outplayed Cayless over the last 2 yrs. The guys in bold are guys we got rid to in part help pay Cayless.

Lets just hope he has been a stabilising influence off the field in holding the club together in a tough time- and that he comes good next year- otherwise his contract should take a buffeting if he wants to stay.

We may find out how loyal he is to the club after all.

oh he's loyal don't you worry about that

and as far as being outplayed???? He has easily outplayed and is a better player than.....

Kite
Kennedy
Stevens
Lang
Skandalis
Civonceiva
Ryan

and Danny Nutley??????? i mean what the???? sure he makes some tackles and some hit ups, but hes not even in the same class mate

at least with the others you have some valid arguements, but i think your trying to compare him against guys who have done a few things in the last couple of years when he has unfortunately been injured at the same time

were you even watching games at the start of the year when he was scoring tries, setting up tries with great passes, making huge runs and sharing the tackling workload with Hindy and Wags?????

Did Canberra give up on Mal Meninga after 2 or 3 broken arms????? Did Parra give up on Sterlo through the early part of his shoulder problems???? and to a much lesser extent at present....look at Alex Chan at Melbourne, broke his arm 3 times in 2 years with us, we let him go and is killing it now for Melbourne and they just re-signed him to a 3 year deal?????
