Weyman returns to boost Raiders

June 6, 2006

Raiders Prop Michael Weyman makes his long awaited return to the NRL this weekend, after gaining selection on the bench for the Raiders match against the Bulldogs on Monday at Telstra Stadium.

Weyman will join fellow forward Trevor Thurling on a new look Raiders bench, with Alan Rothery and Terry Martin moving back into the Raiders Premier League side.

Adrian Purtell has also been named on an extended bench for the Raiders, giving Coach Matt Elliott a number of options leading into Monday’s vital clash against the Bulldogs.

For Weyman it will mark the end of a long road back from injury, and he said he is looking forward to the contest.

“It’s been a while but I am really keen to get out there and play well,” Weyman said. “The Bulldogs are always a hard opposition, but the boys are playing well at the moment so we will see what happens.”

Raiders Coach Matt Elliott said the time is right for Weyman’s return to first grade football, and the competition within the Raiders forward pack for first grade positions is definitely a healthy bonus for the side.

“I’m really pleased for Mick, he’s in the squad so we need to see how he trains during the week to ensure he plays,” Elliott said. “Dane Tilse was also a player who was in the mix, and it’s good to have those types of players available.”

The Bulldogs will be without Origin stars Andrew Ryan, Mark O’Meley, Willie Mason and Nate Myles, but Elliott said this will not change his side’s preparation.

“Obviously it is good to play the Bulldogs when these guys are not available,” Elliot said. “But that doesn’t mean we will be taking them any lighter than what we would have with them in there.”

Good to see the Horse back in. Hopefully common sense prevails and Purtell stays out and Frawley stays in....
At least Thurling is back in too, hopefully Matty Elliot can keep up the good selections!

Great side. first time this year that Elliot has picked the correct 17 players.

I would probably start Thurling and put Williams on the bench, but other than that We have the side to tear the dogs a new one

Good side lets keep Purtell as 18th man and not in the 17. Great to see Horse back it's been a long time coming.

Ironic that Koups makes his FG debut vs. us.

Their 1-5 is a tad scary.

Phelps isn't great, Utai can be good, but he can be easily exploited under the highball. Especially up against Mogg and Frawly. If we go in with the right game plan we can win this one fairly easily IMO

I like the look of the Raiders team. Should be a good game.

I think that Elliot has just about got his forwards right, though I would think that if everyone was fit he`d swap Hodgson onto the bench for Weyman into the starting line up. Would be a nice pair of props to kick off with, wouldn`t it - Weyman and Williams for the first 20 to act as battering rams, then bring on Thurling to continue the grief.

Good side.

i agree
probably the best team he has named all year, he has promopted good performers and dropped poor performing players
seems its taken him 5 years but he may FINALLY be grasping the idea of selecting a form team

Great team. I think it's fair to say that if we do f**k up on Monday, it's not due to poor team selection. Hopefully Purts man of the match performance in PL can give him the confidence to step up in firsts.

I'm slightly confident about this game but even with 4 forwards out of the bulldogs they still are a very deadly side. Remember we are going to be without three of our best aswell in Mogg, Smith and Thompson so it's not like we're at any advantage.
