Slater or Hayne

The argument I'd make is that consistency needs to be included in "peak of their powers". A single game can't be a peak IMO, needs to be more and consistency is a massive part of it.

I consider it as their best season basically. I think what Danish said is correct though, if Hayne had played his whole career in Melbourne there would be no comparison. Hayne in a Bellamy coached team outside of Smith and Cronk would be f**ked.

Slaters results and career are tainted by being involved with systematic cheating. Could he have performed so well in teams created within the rules? With combinations at a club/state/national level that should never have existed? We'll never know.

Tbf, Slater outside Cronk and Smith has been pretty f**ked.

To the tune of 5 GFs, 3 Premierships and 8 straight Origins over 10 years (minus the cap cheating).

Can't get much more f**ked than that.

as earlier - imagine how good Hayne would be at club level with a reasonable team around him...

At origin, even on the wing he has been dominant...

He's a special talent, no mistake... whether he can string several seasons together is another story... Slater is a great player too, but Hayne's just flat out freakish - that string of performances in 09 was other worldly - and this season has been amazingly consistent

Who are the best spine players Hayne has had during his career?

Sandow? Keating? Robson? Mortimer? Kingston?

A couple of years ago I'd take Slater. Now I'd take Hayne.

fair comment, Hayne at only 26 probably still hasn't reached his peak yet although alot have said he is already better

we'll probably be in a better position to make a judgement in about 5 years

Slater still had to put himself into the position to score and benefit from cronk and smiths work.
He has been doing it for years
He rarely has a shit game.
I dare say smith and cronk would struggle without him too.
The bloke was going to be a jockey at one point wasn't he?

Now plays fullback for his country state and title winning club.

Both are freaks though.
Broncos should sign them up for next year.

Hayne without doubt. Slater has been a great fullback and is still a quality player, but I just can't imagine him being able to carry an entire team on his individual brilliance.

If you had an identical team with the only difference being Slater / Hayne at fullback. I think Hayne is going to be the better player 9 times out of 10. If you had him with one of the best halfbacks in the competition and the best hooker in the competition, there wouldn't be any questioning Hayne as the best fullback in the competition.

Hayne is just a freak. He's incredibly quick and light on his feet for a bloke who is built like a second rower, with ridiculous strength and power to bust tackles and create things out of nothing.

Provided he doesn't go missing the next five like he did the last five

If Hayne played his entire career at the Storm and Slater at the Eels, these comparisons would never come up.

Slater is the most consistently brilliant player I've ever seen play the game, but Hayne's ability and skill level are much higher. Hayne's only problem is an inability to consistently show off his talents while surrounded by some of the greatest plodders to ever lace a boot.

The true test is to see how each player goes when thrown into the rep arena, when they both get a fair chance to shine. And in that arena Hayne obliterates Slater. In tests is not even a contest, while even in origin with Slater playing in the clear superior side Hayne has still managed to be best on field in most games he plays.

Bingo.

Would like to see how highly Slater would be rated if he was playing outside Matt Keating, Jeff Robson and Chris Sandow instead of Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Greg Inglis.

Too harsh. Barring some injury problems Hayne has been solid. Even in the Eels very lean years Hayne made the difference at Origin level. NSW were screwed when he was injured. The team results clouded people's views of Hayne's form. I say this as someone who watched every one of those poor team efforts over the last few years.

Yeah injuries f**ked Hayne the last two years. The season before that, in Kearney's first year at the club, he finished second in try assists, playing in a team that contained Chris Hicks, Jordan Atkins, Carl Webb, Casey MacGuire and Paul Whatuera.

I see what you're are saying but I think it would be more f**ked with Hayne there. Hayne has to do it all at Parra, with the space Smith and Cronk would be creating for him and the incredibly good structures Melbourne has Hayne would be unstoppable.

The guy has been playing in some of the shittest NRL teams for years meanwhile Slater spent his whole career playing with the best hooker ever, the best current halfback and for years(the ones where he achieved the most) in a team that was a million over the cap.

Who has been Haynes best teammate? And coach?

As for rep footy Hayne has been one of the best on field consisitently no matter where he was picked in a well and truly outclassed team.

- Ding ding ding we have a winner, load Slater up with the plodders Hayne has had to carry the last 4 years and it would be a case of Billy who. The only place where Slater comes out on top of Hayne is the amount of contract he has signed He is also a better head stomper.
