My hopes / expectations on quality have dwindled as we have moved into the new year.

Any quality player would already be signed.

Our only hope is whoever signs Mitchell will need to make some space.

This is how it is looking now. We may also pick up some higher performing juniors or reserve grade players or there will be some salary cap drama at a club and we could pick up a player that way. There doesn't look to be a lot of options out there that are significantly better than what we have and could therefore improve the team a bit.

I see this season as being a struggle. We are going to have too build up slowly and not waste money on dud contracts.

I think we need to make two more signings before the season starts and another one by the end of June.

The end of June one would be the "other club is in cap trouble" play.

We could just upgrade a couple of development players to.

This getting weirder by the day, it is asked how can the NRL allow this for such an elite player?
I just hope if it all falls over and he comes back to us, we would not offer the same deal that we did originally.

Latrell was offered nearly $1m a season. Now he could gamble on a deal worth half that

Latrell Mitchell is reportedly weighing up whether to take the biggest gamble of his career and sign with South Sydney on a reduced one-year deal.
Fairfax reports Mitchell is considering taking a significant pay cut to sign on at Redfern for $400,000.

He would be banking on the Rabbitohs being able to find enough cap space to offer him a lucrative extension from 2021.

It would be a big risk for the centre who was initially offered a two-year extension at the Roosters worth $800,000 a season while a four-year $3.8 million offer was tabled from Wests Tigers.

Should he agree to the Rabbitohs offer and suffer serious injury or loss of form in 2020, he would lose bargaining power for the following years.

While Mitchell’s signature would be a massive coup for Wayne Bennett and the Rabbitohs, the priority is still securing Gold Coast Titans star Jai Arrow.

The Maroons forward signed a four-year deal from 2021 but both Souths are pushing for the Titans to release him a year early.

Should that happen, however unlikely, Souths would have around $400,000 in cap space to pay Mitchell.

It comes as Mitchell’s chances of staying at the Sydney Roosters took a dent after it was confirmed he wouldn’t return to training with the NRL club.

The 22-year-old was due to return to pre-season training on Monday for the first time since the club pulled an offer off the table for 2021 last November. However, they have since moved to stop an almost-certain media circus, with star centre being granted leave not to appear.

“Sydney Roosters player Latrell Mitchell has been granted a leave of absence, excusing him from all training commitments,” the club said in a statement on Sunday night.

Mitchell hasn’t been back on official duties with the Roosters since winning last year’s premiership.

He turned out for the Kangaroos for their end-of-year Tests, before he and the rest of the club’s international stars had their leave end over Christmas.

Off-contract at the end of 2020, Mitchell has been linked with the Wests Tigers, Canterbury, North Queensland, Gold Coast and South Sydney.

The Rabbitohs now seem the most likely destination, although they have previously moved to distance themselves from the talented back.

Have to ask why he would consider taking a pay-cut when he wouldn't even consider a pay increase and his preferred position with us.

Maybe because hes one of the best players in his position, which is a position that we are severely deficient in.

My post wasnt "we should sign him" it was more "why did he not even contemplate us"

Can I just ask why anybody would still want us to sign him? If he came here it would clearly be as a last resort and I could see him and Madge clashing imminently. I'd give it about a 20% chance of ending on good terms.

I'd take him for sure assuming he sat down with us and made it clear he wanted to play fullback, be a gun, win the comp and work hard for it.

I don't think the guy realises how good he can be. He needs to work on his game but he could be a great player.

I think a deal with Latrell / Souths was done a long time ago. Hence why he never lifted a finger to make contact with us.

I think most players in his position would have signed with us. I don't even think they would have just contemplated us.

Why would he contemplate us ? A great salary, a chance to become a great player in his preferred position, a chance to lead a team into the finals and even a grand final victory and be considered an all time great player.

I see coming to us as having a tonne more upside than any team in the comp at this point in time. We have a decent squad, a good quality coach who appears to want to be successful and appear to be lacking some class in the outside backs which a class player should feel comfortable they could provide.

This makes no logical sense. Just state that you are correct but he hadn't signed a contract. Wouldn't you consider any other team who were going to offer you a shit load more money ? Wouldn't you just stay at your current team who are very successful for more money ?

It's like me doing a deal with company A for 150k verbally and then my current employee offers me 300k to stay and then company B offers my 500k to go to them.

Would anyone seriously go with company A ?

I can't make sense of it either. I'd say he has been promised plenty at Souths.

Every day Trell remains unsigned is another day of no preseason training. He is going to be a mile behind by the time he finally gets to training.

Madge is all about hard work and culture, I think Trell has a different approach. Anyway it would appear we were never even in the hunt so time to move on and fingers crossed we land a couple good signings to fill our 2020 roster

I think "Madge is all about hard work" is more likely the issue, some guys have natural ability and hard training is not going to assist them, but he wants the FB spot and he will need to be fitter than he has ever been, but his head or his mates are telling him he doesn't need it.
No one will cop it, if he is bludging at FB.
He hasn't realised that for $1m a season, a club will want more than natural talent to be delivered. Interesting, that no one else has offered the amount we offered (and the spot he wanted) and he knocked us back.

You'd think that this would have to be above board though. I really can't see them stating we will pay you under the table and it's all good to have you registered in the salary cap for 600k and that appears to be a high figure.

My gut feel is that he hasn't signed anywhere because he keeps changing his manager and a decision will be made soonish.

I'm not sure if he doesn't realize what is expected of him or not but he had better realize it if he signs with us. If he signs elsewhere I hope he takes the money and doesn't give a toss.
