LOL south africa wanna play in the big league but have absolutely no cards to play. pathetic

Why do you even post in the International section? Your attitude is exactly why International RL isn't as strong as it could be. How about you just stick to the NRL section and enjoy watching Parra get a third straight wooden spoon this year :lol::lol:

For whats it worth I hope SA get it. Im all for risk when it comes to growing our game.
Risk isnt a bad thing, it just needs to be managed.

I would prefer that we held it somewhere where it's guaranteed to make money, and use a decent percentage of any profit to develop a proper comp in SA first.

I would not have a problem with South Africa got to host the 2017 World Cup. I wouldn't have a problem if China or Japan or the USA got it either.

Time to spread the joy.

Agreed. It'll be nice to have it somewhere different.

USA would be a good host in the future.

But the thing is that you want a World Cup like this to help springboard interest in the game, for that to happen there needs to be a league etc setup that people can join. Having a world cup and hoping someone will decide they love the game that much to set it all up is pie in the sky stuff.

The RLIF is skating on very thin ice.
If the last tournament wasn't a success several development projects would've been tossed aside due to lack of funds.
If you look up their 2012 report and compare to 2011 you can see an obvious drop off in expenditures due to a lack of security and available finance. They were bracing hard in case the 2013 RLWC wasn't successful, but they were still very vulnerable if the tournament just broke even or lost money.
Hopefully now with 4 year turnarounds it will be easier to cope, but the organization is still only one poor cup away from completely collapsing (the RLIF probably won't die, but all of its initiatives and organized fixtures would probably bite the dust).

finally someone with brains in here.

I would love SA to have a world cup, but not before they have had a local comp running. For South Africans to get interested there has to be an avenue for players to potential make money playing the game. You are targeting those SA guys who may not be the best at Union, but realise that League suits there game more, and provides a decent pay packet if they can catch the eye of ESL or NRL teams.

RL needs a 3rd fully pro comp before we can take the WC elsewhere.

But i commend SA for bidding. It forced the RLIF to set up an actual bid process and committee.

Chicken and egg. A world cup in SA could be just the thing that propels their amateur comp towards a professional one.

In this competitive and crowded world, I think the days of pro comps organically springing up are gone. Even the IRB can't get one up in the US or Argentina.

Its makes money through tv coverage. So having itin SA will be positive in terms of the tv revenue, and assist to develop the game in SA.

Also, by announcing a World Cup 3 years in advance, you will drum up potential players to try and make the side.

As I said before, Risk is not a bad thing. It just needs to be managed.

The Saffers are still no-where near world cup ready.
They fell out of qualification winless and recently lost to NSW country by a decent margin.
They'd need 'italian style' heritage army to stand a chance which I doubt exists within the NRL.

TV revenue is a minimal factor, and definitely won't be able to single-handedly turn the sort of profits that the RLIF needs.
The cup will need attendances which SA may be able to promise but I seriously doubt they can deliver.
They will most likely (if granted a spot in the world cup) lose emphatically and fall out of the cup early, combined with the foreign nature of the sport, its gonna be hard to get bums on seats for the ~30 games that aren't SA vs.

Having it in SA would benefit tv in Europe due to the time difference, although RLWC13 also worked here IMO.

I'd assume a WC in SA may have to be a shorter comp and less teams, perhaps 10 teams with a 4 week comp?

It's true that SA would need a huge talent boost if they are to be competitive by the next world cup and yes there aren't many NRL/ESL players with SA heritage running around (that I know of), but there is a huge amount of very talented SA RU players who could quickly learn the ins and outs of RL, that are on contracts worth peanuts compared to what your average NRL player is earning.

If the RLIF really wanted a flood of SA talent they could easily get it by pressuring the NRL into allowing limited cap exemptions for SA players, add in a few well placed heritage players and we'd be off to the races.

If they used this tactic I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rhinos go from international RL bottom dwellers into the top four international teams in the world by the next WC, I also wouldn't be too surprised to see an ex-Springbok or two playing for the Rhinos either.

But I can't see any of this happening, it'd be risky and I doubt that the RLIF has the balls to attempt such a plan.

A number of minor nations who have seen the presentations have supported the bid of South Africa. Such national governing bodies tend to be pragmatic from having seen the realities of operations.
