They all played at Souths and I'm pretty sure they all coached there in some degree, I know for a fact both Brian Smith and Phil Gould started coaching at Souths in lower grades.

Sonic,Im sure Brian Smith first coaching gig was at Newtown under 23's in 1978.

All 3 of them had an association with Souths either playing or coaching but never coached first grade at Souths but went on to coach first grade at other clubs

3. Correct about Wing but not about Sutto. The last round match in 2005, Sutto created absolute havoc when he ripped through the Sharks line. They had no answer at all for his massive step and insidious elusiveness. One day he will return to the backline, where he belongs.

Dave, your dead right I forgot about that game against the Sharks. I was thinking round 2 when we played Paramatta at the SFS,where Sutto absolutely carved Paramatta up that day, making bust after bust, thus setting holes for Hegarty and Luke McDougall to run into.

Didnt Gus play for Souffs in 87 and start coaching the Boggs in 88, to a GF win????

Edit: Just read he retired in 86. So I gather he coached for a year 87, souffs lower grades???? Anyone know which grade????

Gus retired aftet playing for Souths in 1986.It it commonly know around Souths people that Gus played a unofficial role in coaching/assisting Piggins throughout 1986.
Gus in 1987 went to Canterbury and coached the Reserve Grade then onto first grade there in 1988.

Interesting thanks mate.

I had heard the story of Gus supposedly being the "real" coach at souffs.

Again Sonic proved his knowlege of facts.

Dude your a idiot, Like Newcastle Rabbit said, Gus was coaching when piggins was in charge, just like he is now with Freddy.
Didn't say he was a real coach. Just said he was coaching. Just watching Gus play in 1986, I have DVD's hes directing everyone around the park.
Smith did coach in our lower grades, I didnt know he had a stint at newtown, I was wrong there, but i knew he coached in souths lower grades.
I thought Gould had a hand in souths under 23's also.

Its time we gave our guest Sing STSAE baby his own dedicated channell on the forum.

In the meantime, lets have some more trivia!

Daves Quick Quickies-"the forgotten heroes" volume 1. This is a bit harder than the usual lads.

Hang on I'll set the youngster up first

OK:

1. Name the Souths player who has scored the most tries in a match for Souths?

Who was it against? Where was it (venue) and name the year ( Clue: before 2006)

2. Who was Eric Simms? Name just two of his many achievements.

3. What is Les Brennan famous for in Rabbitoh folklore?

4. Where is Bob McCarthy placed in most tries for the club? How many did he score?

5. How many games did Craig Coleman play for the club? I'll take + or - 10.

6. Pick the odd Rabbitoh out:-

Ron Coote, Jim Lisle, Bill Spence, George Piggins, Bob Grant, Steve Walsh.

Why?

True of False:

1. Paul Sait played 166 games for Souths?

2. Eric Simms scored 10 goals v Cronulla at Redfern on April 11 1969?

3. Johnny Rosewell played for Australia

4. Souths had 6 internationals playing for Australia in the test v NZ on June 1 1969.

Name them please.

5. We came 7th in 1973?

6. We used to play at the Sydney Sportground.

7. Smiths Crisps have been our longest Sponser.

Good luck lads, the pre-season golden rabbit will be presented for a 100% score.

Will the Pre-season Golden Rabbit be presented or was it all just a dream for our mate Newk.

Lets see how he pulled up:-

1. Incorrect. Harold Horder, 5 tries v Norths, Showground June 4 1917. Not the start Newk was after.

2. CORRECT! Simmsy got the most points in a season 1967-1971 inclusive

3. CORRECT! a massive 29 tries. They were harder to score in the old days (1954)

4. CORRECT! Bob played 15 seasons. An olden day Pauley Mellor!

5. Tugger Coleman achieved this remarkable feat in only 11 illustrious seasons.

6. Incorrect! Stevie Walsh was the only one in the list who was not a kangaroo!

7..... Tor F:-

1. False but incorrect. 165 games I understand.

2. False and you are correct wd.

3. True and correct.

4. True and correct

5. Yes we did, just out of the top 5!

6. Indeed we did 1911-13 and 1921-1924 and 1928-47.

7. Correct, delicious products

Sorry Newk, no pre-season golden rabbit possible but u will be awarded a commemorative plastic carrot ...its is in the mail.

Dont worry, that will a collectors piece in 50 years! You may even be able to retire on it!

Dave,we are in dispute re most tries in a game for Souths.(We might have to settle this at the Homebush Brewery.:D ) All the records I have are from the "the encyclopedia of rugby league players,Souths edition", show that Johnny Graves holds the most tries in a game record, and Paul Sait played 163 first grade games, and come as a replacement 3 times.
