I was at the game and saw the incident. As a tigers fan, but one who is not overly biased, I'd like to call it how I saw it.
O'Neill came in to help in a tackle and hit Williams high. This tackle alone should have given Melbourne a penalty and O'Neill on report, nothing more. It didn't happen.
Williams got up to play the ball, with O'Neill as the second marker. As the Melbourne dummy half scooped up the ball and began to attack the tigers line, O'Neill had turned to follow play and get back in the defensive line when Williams casually strolled up and hit O'Neill square in the head while O'Neill wasn't looking.
What hurts me most about this incident is the fact that it was O'Neill's 100th game for the Joint venture, and it was at his home ground, where he played the majority of his first grade career at. The club had organised a celebration for him after the game, but that had to be put on hold until a later date. O'Neill was wearing an oxygen mask for some time I believe, but was in an improved state after showering and resting.
Williams' act is of a similar level to one earlier this season by Francis Meli, against Souths (I think). However, the maliciousness of Williams' attack is far more severe than that of Meli's.
The hit was sickening, the sight of seeing a local legend lying on the ground convulsing whilst sub conscious is an image I may never forget. Williams deserves nothing less than a years suspension and a hefy fine.
O'Neill too should be suspended for his high shot, but I dare say that will be served whilst he is injured.
I believe that the referee handled the situation dilligently and for a new referee, I think he controlled the game well.
I hope I do not live to see another incident as ugly as that ever.
