It's the same in Perth as it is in Sydney or anywhere when it comes to local councils. They are let to one code/club etc for various times ie tue/thu training and sat/sun gameday but they can be leased or utilised at any other time by any group. A local school sports carnival for example.

That why when you play a game at North Beach you gotta watch out for the steaming dog turds.

The sky will soon be falling in - for the afl. In Melbourne where the public are obsessed with the game and the afl is used to throwing it's weight around they can get away with it. In nsw and qld it's yet another display of arrogance that won't wash.

Reading the Bigfooty thread, and others, I notice they always call league rugby and union rugby and justify it saying its all the same. How stupid is that? You hate both sports? Fair enough. You think they are similar? Fair enough. However, are they so stupid that this is the mentality?

AFL fan 1: I have never once said “I’m off to the NRL tonight”
AFL fan 2: What's wrong with that if you are going to see the Storm? If you just said "rugby" you could have meant the Rebels as well.

AFL fan 2 actually acknowledges that mixups could occur if you said “I’m going to the rugby”, all because of their stupid joint naming tendency. IF YOU RECOGNISE THAT THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS CALL THEM BY DIFFERENT NAMES, YOU f**kING geniusS! Honestly…..

That stay about 1 oval for every 68 players is astounding.

The hate shouldn't be directed at the AFL though, at least in the main. It's the councils acting contrary to the interests of it's rate payers. The AFL may have paid for the upgrades, BUT who is responsible for the ongoing upkeep? Rate payers? For ovals that are barely going to be used?

As someone said, only option is to vote the twats out.

The media point is a good one too. If RL tried this down here, would be front page news for days.

They know there is a difference, they largely just refuse to acknowledge it.

After 15 years, I've given up arguing that one with people.

If they are saying it just to piss us off, again thats fair enough. But to recognise that it causes mixups and to still do it is pure stupidity.......oh wait never mind. They are AFL fans, point taken, moving along.

I don't get this whole calling a sport by the controlling body of one comp.

I also never hear kids say that they play NRL. They play footy, or league, or rugby league.

Why AFL attempts to brand it's sport with the acronym of the current controlling body is beyond me.

It's worse than US sports with their branding. Yes they're very heavy with the use of NBA/NFL/NHL etc.. but people still call it basketball, football or hockey.

The stupidest are the merkins who talk about "AFL Football".

Actually. I'd say in some quarters the branding attempt has worked down here.

Footy in Sydney means one thing. And it's not aussie rules.

No matter how hard they try and hijack.

Soccer is still called soccer as well. Despite efforts to hijack the name football.

I'm thinking the same thing. In Vic. the AFL does what it pleases and gets away with murder. (almost literally). I wonder how they will react when they don't get their own way in NSW & QLD.
