Squad for the Downer Nines

The post that Jake responded to was where Pou started talking about the issue of club compo for injuries sustained in Round 1 of the competiton proper - nothing to do with the topic of this thread (the Nines squad)?

I'd imagine the (all too regular) off-topic tangent is what Jake and Avenger were highlighting. If Pou just stayed discussing injuries and the Nines instead of hijacking the thread (for another of his pointless debates), then I don't think anyone would have made an adverse comment either way?
Actually if anyone was taking the thread of topic it was you with your snide digs at Pou.........

Maybe the NRL think that in its current evolution its purpose and therefore the purpose of the licences they issue, is to entertain people. Therefore they (the NRL) choose to have multiple ways to entertain such as a weekend with a variant of their main product. This then also becomes the point of an NRL team.

Kerry Packer thought the same way 40 years ago and we now have One-Day Cricket. T20 is just another variant of the main game of multi-day cricket. Should the ACB not be offering these domestically and not participating in the international versions?

Nines is just another variant and we need to accept it is probably here to stay.

What rot. All that suggests is that the regular NRL matches on their own just aren't good enough or entertaining enough.

Some cut down version of the game might be useful to allow developing nations to get a foothold and compete in a RL-esque type of game. Similar to 7's rugby.

But it has no place for NRL squads or NRL teams. Adds no value and if anything detracts from the elite status that should be accorded to NRL sides and players.

The cricket examples are a case in point. Hit & giggle variants of a game for people with no attention span or understanding of the game. Useful for developing non-test playing nations, but the main purpose is to provide fodder for a TV network. T20 also provides some retirement options for ex -players.

You only need to play one of your top five paid players. Theirs is T-Rex and ours would be Corey Norman.

I believe that you have to have 12 of your top 25 players in the 9's team. I find it hard to believe that 12 of those listed in the Dogs 9's team list are in their Top 25

As I've pointed out, the 25th highest paid player wouldn't be on much more than the 26th highest. It could be literally a dollar more. If you accept that then it's not a stretch to think the 20th or even 15th highest paid player is also on little more than the 26th highest paid.

Outside the top 17, the other eight members of the top 25 would all be on about minimum salary, IMO.

Well I've crunched the numbers and they've certainly cut it very fine but more than likely they've got just 12 of their top 25. I think you'd agree that there is little to no chance that the following 13 players are not in their Top 25.

James Graham
Will Hopoate
Josh Jackson
David Klemmer
Michael Lichaa
Moses Mbye
Josh Morris
Brett Morris
Lloyd Perrett
Sam Perrett
Josh Reynolds
Curtis Rona
Aiden Tolman

Apart from Lloyd Perrett (probably top 25) I agree the rest are top 25 certainties, so you're probably right, that they've submitted the bare minimum.

But how many other clubs have done the same? I think it's likely they all have, including us.

Call it what you want, it is entertainment and therefore something the governing body has chosen to do. And yes, it is offered via the medium of TV in order to reach a larger audience.

Just because you don't appreciate it, like it or think it adds no value doesn't mean it is wrong. Some people still use a traditional abacus to add up too.

Interesting Storm team... I'm interested to know who the 5th highest paid Storm player is out of this lot. I find it hard to believe that any of this lot earn more than Will Chambers or Jesse Bromwich.

Coach: Adam O?Brien
1. Curtis Scott
2. Young Tonumaipea
3. Richie Kennar
4. Cameron Munster
5. Marika Koroibete
6. Blake Green - captain
7. Brodie Croft
8. Nelson Asofa-Solomona
9. Ben Hampton
10. Mark Nicholls
11. Kenny Bromwich
12. Tohu Harris
13. Dale Finucane
14. Nafe Seluini
15. Jeremy Hawkins
16. Dean Britt
17. Joe Stimson
18. Tony Tumusa

Isn't Tohu Harris an international forward? One of the best backrowers in the game, surely??
He's huge for them, would be no shock to find out he is one of their 5 highest earners...

Im sure teams can argue that certain players are not fit for the tournament

Having said that, it is horseshit

You'd have to suggest that Tohu Harris is there Top 5 paid player given the team list. Makes you wonder the value they're then getting out of Will Chambers, Kevin Proctor or possibly even Jesse Bromwich.

I can't believe that any of this lot below in Manly's team list are paid more than three of these blokes:

DCE
Brett Stewart
Jamie Lyon
Dylan Walker
Steve Matai
Nate Myles
Martin Taupau

Manly - Jamie Buhrer, Fabian Goodall, Nathan Green, Jayden Hodges, Isaac John, Wof Lavaka, Brenton Lawrence, Blake Leary, Feleti Mateo, Tim Moltzen, Matt Parcell, Jesse Ramien, Tony Satini, Tom Symonds, Jorge Taufua, Jake Trbojevic (c), Tom Trbojevic, Brayden Wiliame.

Yeah I thought Harris. An 80 minute, goalkicking back rower is worth more than a centre of similar quality (Chambers).

Plus Munster just re-signed in the face of huge interest, so he could be top five paid. But more likely he is back-ended and is on a 'modest' $300k or so this year.

I think it's perfectly conceivable that the trbjojevics (or at least Tom) to be on more than three of walker, Matai tapau and myles.

I would have thought there was more injury risk in the late night drunken brouhaha with a taxi driver than playing nines.

Some of them are psychos.
