Sri Lanka tour of NZ

This isn't a particularly great bowling attack though, other than Herath
In fact the entire Sri Lankan team barring Sanga, Mathews and Herath is pretty average really

Yeah but for all that they could have had NZ bowled out if they were more aggressive.

Williamson dropped. Beautiful ball from Herath and Jayawardene shells it

Has Williamson now eclipsed Taylor as our best batsman?

Oh yes, and injuries permitting he will quite possibly be regarded as our best ever (must admit, I am not sure who that is - Dempster, Donnelly, Sutcliffe, Turner, Crowe) - Williams and Taylor will both end on those discussions, Donnelly unfortunately didn't get to play enough

But yeah, no question Williamson is the best bat atm

I think it's Crowe- but then again, he's the only one of those I actually saw.

I lean that way too, Turner was a great player.

However, our early cricketers often get ignored (as they were by the Australians, Clarrie Grimmett being the exception). Donnelly was obviously a huge talent, I think he played Union for England too? Exceptional player by all accounts. Jack Cowie as a quick bowler too, his record is like Bond's, and Bradman talked him up so he must have been good

Don't think Taylor will end up in that bracket, although he won't be far behind.

I don't think Taylor will produce more than he already has and will probably end up averaging roughly what he is now, but I fully expect Williamson to only get better and better.

Just to put it in perspective statistically, as it currently stands (with Williamson being Not Out)

Glenn Turner 73 Innings, 2991 runs @ 44.64 and 7 centuries
Andrew Jones 74 Innings, 2922 runs @ 44.27 and 7 centuries
Kane Williamson 71 Innings, 2913 runs @ 44.13 and 9 centuries

The other perspective is (like some of the earlier guys) Turner had an abbreviated career, in fact never played for NZ during his peak.

In fact, in many ways Williamson might be a similar player to him

Lead is now 190, brilliant stuff

New Zealand aren't clear yet but they're almost the favourites now

Yeah, aside from the "out of sight, out of mind" that comes with the pre/early TV cricketers, they often had punctuated or shortened careers due to a variety of real life reasons.

JR Reid and Bruce Taylor are two others - very fine all-rounders (by god we've produced pour share) yet everyone assumes Cairns was the best

In a quiet sort of way, this has been a wonderful test - back and forth, really enjoying it

The one thing Williamson has over most other NZ batsmen past or present is his ability to go on and post a hundred. That's what made Crowe so good (17 centuries, 18 half centuries)

Williamson 9 centuries, 15 fifties
Fleming 9 centuries, 46 fifties
