Does show a bit of how poor the application and arrogance of the New Zealand batsmen was yesterday. Only one or two of them can say they got out to difficult deliveries.

Yeah, and it has put them in a tricky position now. They will need to bat today and the better part of tomorrow- so we'll need a couple of big innings here.

This is seriously the time that we need Latham and Rutherford to stand up.

Also, can security kick out the mouthy idiot in the crowd at the Basin?

Rutherford very lucky. Gloved it but the umpire called it a no-ball. It wasn't a no-ball

Commentators calling for it to be reviewed, and the decision reversed- but I don't think you can. In my view, the umpire calling a no-ball has an impact on the batsmen.

Rutherford gets a lot of luck going his way, which is bizarre considering his poor record.

Rutherford and Latham are halfway to doing the job that we need them to do and they are going about doing the job well. Hopefully, I haven't just put the mocker on them.

Some people in the cricinfo comments comparing Ken Rutherford to Hamish.
Chalk and cheese really, Ken didn't have a great average but was certainly a better player

At this stage at least. I didn't see Rutherford's start, but he was very streaky at the start of his career.

Different eras I know, but at the same stage in his career Ken was averaging about 11, batting primarily in the top order. Its amazing they persisted with him really. Also, it was at about this stage that he made his breakthrough 100, against England in Wellington. Hopefully its an omen.

Herath on now.

Almost inevitable really. Decent contribution from Rutherford…hopefully Latham kicks on with Williamson now. A good partnership here will go a long way to evening the match right back up.

If I remember correctly Ken was sent up to the West Indies on his debut stretch and got justifiably owned by Ambrose and co. Got a big string of ducks and 1's

Hamish on the other hand belted that 170 odd to start off, so he's actually gotten worse.
Surely his goose is cooked now, he just isn't really up to it

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Rutherford fan (although he went ok today). He's like a poor man's Matthew Sinclair

Worrying run of failures for Latham in this series too. He seems to be a better batsman away from NZ.

Bugger was just going to say it was important for Latham to kick on and prove that the UAE wasn't just a one off.

Interesting you mention Sinclair, I always thought him to be a bit unlucky with selections. He was always in and out of the team and probably should have played 10-15 more tests before he was written off. 33 tests is not much, Rutherford has already clocked up nearly half that

Realistically, we need a second innings total of at least 400 and not much more than a day to play. Hopefully McCullum and (Williamson/Neesham/Waitling) can repeat their Basin heroics. Similar kind of situation.
