Stalled and stagnant Sydney clubs

Yeh i mentioned ease of access. I wouldn’t expect many people to travel 3hrs round trip to go to a game. However if you put a 45min travel circle around a stadium that is more than manageable and acceptable for a fan and there’d be hundred of thousands of people living in that radius.
But those people inside your 45 min circle

On average travel 1.25h to and from work 5 days a week

They’ll be used to a bit of a trip then lol
didn’t take me much more than that last week to go from Sydney to Wollongong, where the heck are people living and working in Sydney?

We're not talking every week. We are talking 10-12 home 'events' a year for a club. Even if our goal is only half of them to be that sort of experience that's only 5-6 events a year. You telling me that's not manageable? There is ZERO reason every game in Sydney couldn't eventually be played in a quality stadium in front of 20k plus people. Well zero other than a lack of vision, strategy and investment. At the moment Sydney sits in 27th place in world city attendances for NRL games compared to other leading sports in the other cities. Stagnation is a good word despite the fact the game has had over $3billion at its disposal in just the last 10 years!is?

Lmao you can tell this guy has never seen peak hour traffic in a major city before. Try being on parramatta rd at 5 pm on a Friday trying to get to Accor or the sfs

or commuting to beookvale along Mosman and the spit or down king George’s rd to Cronulla

and then being stuck for 30 mins trying to leave the ground if you stay till the final siren

I’ve never found watch a game at home comparable to being at the game. That’s just an excuse for lazy fans that aren’t very committed to their club. If you can afford it and can get to your clubs stadium but can’t get off your settee ten times a year to go and support your club what does that say about you as a “fan”?

having said that we also can’t expect people just to turn out. End of day they are a customer and the game day is the product, if the product isn’t meeting the customers needs then we can hardly blame them for not buying it. emotional attachment only goes so far. Sadly our business model at the moment doesn’t seem very interested in making the product that’s a must buy item for more customers. nrl has decided the product will be for tv sales and stuff the game day product.
Maybe RL fans are more likely to be introverted?

I prefer my own company. I hate loud noises. I don't like to be away from my pets and they hate it when I'm not home. I don't enjoy being squashed in with other people. Being crammed in on a bus isn't pleasant. Health issues make it a hassle to attend a game.

That's my experience at Lang Park for Cowboys vs Broncos games that draw more than 40k. Just getting from the stadium to the bus terminal takes at least 30 or more minutes. Getting from the back of the queue to the bus can easily take 30 minutes. It's a bastard of a trip.

Mate and I took 90 minutes to get to a sharks game from his house 15 kilometres away. Thankfully his wife drove us. It was a 6 pack trip. PR spends his life whinging about this. He is better ignored. He adds nothing to this discussion other than carping criticism and negativity

It depends on your industry

Corporates will workin the CBD locations which includes, North Sydney, North Ryde, Parramatta

But if you want to buy a block of land these days your going to SW or NW Sydney, southern Illawarra, southern highlands, northern CC and commute

On this topic what actually defines a stalled and stagnant club? Cronulla are arguably the most maligned club on this forum, yet we have the potential to be a power house. Own our own ground. Have huge backers via the development. A thriving growing innovative junior base with just under 400 teams and 5550 players, second behind Penrith. New sponsors. Forward thinking board. Maybe we are now the pace setters?

No, we aren’t the pace setters. We are just lucky that the management in place have the foresight to be building the club in the right direction, and are not scared to make tough decisions for the better Of the club.
The bigger clubs have been run correctly for years, we are trying to catch them.
There are a few clubs that are falling behind, and it doesn’t look like they will be progressing in the near future either.

Interesting that some still haven’t jumped at the opportunity presented by promoting female participation. We are right in top of that. The ‘pace setter’ comment was tongue in cheek. We’ve suffered for too long not to know how dire things can become with the wrong management

This isn't an unusual story.

hence the reason the talk in my circle of friends is should we renew memberships for next year.

We are talking people with 20+ year members. That is the reality of life in Sydney

But if you live in Perth you know better and can judge accordingly. The situation is getting worse. It’s why st George should at least consider claiming Wollongong and beyond in toto and base themselves there. Similarly Manly should at least claim the central coast but they seem to lack vision (bar a three day visit to the USA)

The TV schedule won't change but you could have every club having 1-2 event games a year.

Have the rest local and get what it gets. Different circumstances will dictate what crowds it pulls.

This season has covid lingering and horrible weather.
Next year those things may not be an issue. Dogs find form and crowds lift.

Panthers crowds I think will halve at Parra but short term pain

Panthers will survive a small stop at parra and then thrive even more. As for the bulldogs they are an enigma. I hope they get back on track soon. Have huge support when going well

It was started by a pom they generally have little idea about rugby league in Sydney or just hate it out of jealousy because league is so weak in their homeland

new stadiums are taking just about all the clubs forward. If we’re actually going to talk about stalled clubs it’s mostly the non Sydney ones which are the problem right now

the warriors, titans and cowboys have been pretty much a rabble their entire existence
