Yeah I don't quite get this either. After the Empire was destroyed then obviously the Republic was put back in place, so why are the people who brought down the Empire a different entity and what are they a resistance to?

Good question actually. I hadn't really thought of that, but it is a bit odd... the First Order do at one point reference the Republic supporting the Rebellion behind the scenes. So it's not fleshed out, but that kinda makes it sound like the Rebellion maybe still has a role in the fringes where the Republic can't quite reach or something, but then given every space craft seem to be able zip to any part of the galaxy in a second that doesn't make much sense either.

I also don't get how the first order could have built something as large as a planetary lazer without anyone anywhere in the republic - a galactic governing body that includes countless civilisations apparently - noticing. I mean the movie itself showed us that every once in a while a Storm Trooper has an attack of conscience, so are we supposed to believe not a single storm trooper in however many hundreds of thousands/millions it would have taken over however many years it would have took them to carve a thousands kilometre deep and wide trench in a planet and then build a giant cannon didn't rebel and tell someone?

Surely you'd think at some point that would get back to someone connected to the Republic and there'd be a preemptive strike.

Well I think the script writers have got what they wanted. A tonne of questions from the fans which they can assure everyone will be back to watch the next one. There's parallels drawn with Ep 4, (the trio of heroes in Rey, Finn and Poe, a hooded villain and destroying a superweapon,) but I'd stop short of saying it was a carbon copy.

I don't mind Kylo Ren. He's skilled with the Force but not as powerful as the other Sith Lords and lacks the emotional maturity that made Vader/Maul/Sidious so cunning. However that emotional instability renders him unpredictable which could make him more dangerous than the rest. Certainly a lot more character development available there, I don't think he's going to be a whiny sulk like Anakin was in Eps 1-3.

Rey being Luke's daughter is all too predictable for me, I reckon that Rey and Ren will likely be siblings. I really enjoyed the movie and was very impressed that Disney just didn't throw a heap of cash at special effects hoping that would carry the story like Eps 1-3. Unlike the prequels where you're pretty well informed of the results, I am chomping at the bit for the next one as so much has yet to be answered.

Ok there has been some star wars books released since disney bought it that explains whats going on. Ive not read them so im going off what i read on the internet

The empjre never really fell. Basically it was a bit like alexanders greece where a bunch of moffs and the like all claimed they were the new emperor so it splintered off. Meanwhile the republic wins over a bunch of planets but was not especially strong. They also bring in the anti palpatine law where the republic no longer has a standing military but each member must provide x amount of defence.

The left over empire splinters launch incursions against the republic until there is a big shoot out on that planet rey is on (ive forgot the name) thats why there are so many crashed ships there. Eventually a peace is signed.

Im unsure how the first order started. Obviously that order is to kill jedis right ? But besides that im not sure. There will be background stuff released.

So it's effectively a continuing civil war between a Republic that doesn't quite have control and a First Order that refuses to concede it's authority.

As mentioned by others Rey as Luke's daughter is a little predictable. If they don't go that route it would be pretty cool if it was Obi-wan's granddaughter.

Or maybe she has a family history steeped in the dark side... That would be cool...

Imagine if she was Palpatine's granddaughter... And she was hidden on Jakku from her parents to keep the Sith away from her...

Or maybe Dooku's...

When I told my 6 yr old son Darth Vader was Luke Skywalkers father he was stunned - literally couldn't believe it. When I told him Kylo Ren was Han Solos son, he was shocked. He's freaked out by Kylo Ren but absolutely adores Han Solo. So when I tell him in a few years that Rey is actually Luke Skywalker daughter, he is going to be absolutely thrilled.... and I think that's how you keep the legend alive... simple storylines that a 6 year old can understand and grow up loving.... although I admit, the movie is too scary for a 6 year old (which is why he hasn't watched it!!!) yet has all the toys and light sabers thanks to the toy shops flooding the market with all the merchandise.. which I had to buy... for my son that is... not for me... at least that's what I told the wife!~

Actually I like when it lands though, looks like a Pterodactyl landing. Fitting given Jurassic World came out this year too.

It doesn't bother me if people dislike Kylo Ren as a villain but it triggers me when people say he's a Darth Vader clone. Personality, motives, and most likely his story arc are completely different.

I always liked the Heir to the Empire series by Timothy Zahn (which started the whole EU).

I have the trilogy somewhere in a box. If I can dig them out, I can lend them out to anyone who wants to read them.

Also have the Jedi Academy trilogy that followed it (well, it did back in 1994 - these days I think there are heaps of books in between it all).

Edit - just looked up the SW EU book list - wow! I've missed a few since...LOL.

Are there any non-canon book series worth reading?

I must admit I am heavily into the movies and games, but I never got involved in the expanded universe.

I am reading Shadows Of The Empire for about the 100th time! Set between Empire and Jedi. Such a pity Disney blew that one up cos it'd be a brilliant animated series!
