Saw it last night in Gold Class (happy there was only 10mins of previews) and it was so good.

A few questions remaining which I really hope they answer in the next one.
-Rey's parents
- How big is Snoke
- knights of Ren explained, are they still around or just Kylo?

Can't wait for next one, but am very excited about Rogue One next x-mad.

I wasn't left with any doubt that Rey is the daughter of Luke. Especially when Kylo Ren couldn't use the force to summon Luke's lightsaber but Rey could. Plus that whole conversation between Rey and Maz. I'm guessing Luke hid her away after seeing what became of Ben.

Why would anyone want to, or should anyone, identify with the bad guy? Senseless (which we don't even know is senseless yet?) evil has always been a thing.

You need to be able to least partially identify with or understand the motives of your villain if they're being presented as redeemable or "still having light in" them. I raised Joeffrey before as an example of how a villain can work without needing to identify him; by making them effectively the personification of evil. The Emperor is like that in the original trilogy.

The only similarity with Anakin is that they were both good and went bad. Their personalities are noticeably different :?
Well that and they're both whiny brats who have massive daddy issues. With Anakin his Daddy issues are with Obi Wan, who basically raised him from the age of like 5, whilst with Ren it's with Han. As I said before, the biggest difference between them is that Ren, as a privileged kid from a royal family, really has nothing to complain about in his life, whereas Anakin at least had roots in slavery.

So basically Ren is like Anakin but a more privileged version that actually got to have a mother and father in his life.

He's effectively the star wars version of that f**ktard Elliot Rodger - that rich kid who went on a killing spree because girls didn't like him.

Just thought of more
- where did Maz get Luke/Anakin's lightsaber
- origin of Kylo's lightsaber
- more explanation of Kylo having Vader's mask maybe

Finally watched it and loved it... Some thoughts...

I hope Rey isn't Luke's daughter... Too obvious...

It would be cool if her name was like... Rey-Gon Jinn ... Qui-Gon's granddaughter... Or even Rey-Wan Kenobi... Obi-Wan's granddaughter... Maybe Luke ends up training Obi-Wans granddaughter just like Obi-Wan did for Annakin and starting his own training.

Also not overly impressed that Kylo Ren and General Hux have to answer to the White Orc from ' The Hobbit'...

US $517 million opening weekend. Second highest worldwide ever behind Jurassic World. It only finished $8 million behind Jurassic World which took $100 million in China where Star Wars doesn't open until early January.

lol please tell me where Vader was ever "relatable " in the original trilogy? You were supposed to believe him redeemable too

Kylo imo is chasing power, for current reasons unknown. Maybe he was the "weedy kid" that Han was disappointed in? Maybe Han couldn't relate to him and didn't give him much attention and Kylo is now proving something? Maybe he couldn't live up to his Jedi legacy and wants it burned to the ground?

Honestly, I like that he is massively flawed, massively conflicted and massively frustrated. It opens up so much

I still hold out hope that Thrawn and Mara Jade will make there way into the Disney universe. A stand alone film featuring either would be excellent fan service.

Won't happen.

Imagine the tantrums if they included the characters but changed their story or personality in any way.

A clean break is best

To be honest those reasons right there are why I just don't like him as a character... I don't mind a flawed character, I just don't particularly care for lame ones, and a weedy privileged kid with daddy issues is kinda lame for an epic like Star Wars.

It's interesting the reactions to him all the same - on this forum and elsewhere it seems to be split down the middle with people thinking he's either a lame loser of a character or somehow deep and interesting.

I think he'll be much more formidable in the next 2 films. He proved to Smoke that he's committed to the darkside after killing his father, thus he will "complete his training". Will be interesting to see how much time has elapsed between this film and the next.

I think he is both. He is a lame loser but he's also interesting.

Basically we don't know his full motivation. We don't know a lot about him. This is what I took from it.

1. He's a dumb but powerful kid. Hence the tantrum.
2. He is a subversion of the jedi trope where he is fearful of the light side of the force. I thought that was nifty.
3. He is obsessed with Vader
4. He doesn't think much of han as a father.

What interests me is number 3. I assume Luke didn't give him his grandfather's skull. I think snoke has been telling him all kinds of nonsense about vader. So I think there is going to be interesting mysteries about the two of them in the next film.

Also did anyone find it weird how they kept calling it Luke's lightsabre...I suppose it was to a point but it was originally anakins not Luke's. Luke's was the green one. The blue one was given to him by obiwan after he took it from old burnt up volcano anakin.

Edit

Also he's pretty tough. He takes a direct hit from that bow blaster thing that the movie went out of its way to say was some badass super weapon and he took a number of cuts from light sabres

I'm wondering what it was about Finn that made Kylo take a good look at him at the beginning of the movie. Did he sense the force in him or did he just foresee that he was trouble?

Maybe he's a Windu...

Although you'd think if they had a stormtrooper who was force sensitive Snoke and Kylo would have picked it up earlier.

It would be pretty cool if Fin went to go find where he was taken from and ends up being called to Windu's lightsaber...

Wow. So it's only $8million short and hasn't touched the market of well over a billion people. That's huge.

How much did Disney buy Lucasfilm for? $4billion?

Should make a fortune on toys with these movies too. Hell even I want an X-Wing after seeing it........nobody wants a sh*tty Naboo Starfighter.

I think kylo is very good at reading emotions. He probably noticed one of the stormtroopers was having a nervous breakdown and thought thats a bit weird they are supposed to be brainwashed.

Well whatever his origins are, its certainly a different take on the traditional villain role. Thats what im enjoying and i suspect others see it that way too. If you prefer your bad guys to be all powerful, confident maniacs then i guess its a disappointment

As much as i like the homages to the original trilogy, i certainly dont want the new ones to be carbon copies. The approach to Kylo certainly changes things
