the prequels are mostly just boring as hell. thank god for john williams. the droid factory scene is AOTC is my pick for the absolute worst scene in all of star wars.

ROTJ does indeed have ewoks. it does concludes the OG trilogy with a lot of spectacle and action that feels well earned because we've spent two movies with characters we know and like. some of the effects are still pretty incredible for a movie released in '83. the luke/vader/emperor confrontation is executed flawlessly and is a highlight of the entire franchise.

Looking at it today it's sickening that a film like empire shares a billing with ewoks which only served a purpose of shilling merch.... seriously where the f**k were the rebel ground troops

Ewoks made a half funny scene with c3p0 the cockblocker and that's it

every star wars movie since ROTJ has been about shilling merch. every decision disney makes with the current star wars movies will be firstly be about how they can maximise earnings and artistry second. the star wars movies are what kicked off the whole mass merchandising of movies to make obscene amounts of money. yeah, the ewoks are for the kids, but kids have always been a huge part of star wars' audience.

It's true the coolness of the lightsaber and it's variants will always be perfect merch, it's function allows one to remove limbs without blood

Ewoks just always felt overtly manufactured where everything else feels organic

I'm more willing to forgive Jar Jar than those things

well george lucas made a ton of money because he was given the merchandising rights for the original star wars for basically nothing, a movie he was so stressed making it literally put him in the hospital.

he scaled back the amount of work he did for empire, acting as a producer basically. there was a lot of push and pull between him and others (mostly the director) about creative issues; lucas wanted to do things cheaper and quicker.

so when the time to make jedi rolls around he brings in a director who's is basically a hired gun. essentially the ewoks are a result of lucas understanding the value of merchandising.

Now Poe and Finn are going to kiss

There's a lot of man on man and woman on woman love in the new canon novels which is one thing but let's get real.... anything that happens on screen is going to be implied so the adults "get it" but no way would they go all Brokeback Mountain in a Star Wars film.

I love the prequels but I can see they are not made well in parts. The arena scene in AOTC should have been so great, gathering all the Jedi for a massive fight, but comes across cheesy. Still love the story and universe.

The originals are pretty overrated, for every complaint the prequels have the originals have a similar complaint

Like Jar Jar and ewoks or whiny male lead

The prequels lacked a badass woman and a lovable rogue

and a coherent story with likable characters. there's a reason the originals are culturally resonant and remembered (how many things in the two new movies are just there because they're things that people remember from the OG trilogy). the prequels would barely be remembered if they weren't star war movies.

Lol@lightsaber duels in the original, Vader could've swatted Luke like a fly at any time given the events of AOTC,ROTS and rogue one, unless he knew from first sight that was his boy

Also Leia never set off his force sensitivity, unless he knew about her too, seems more than a little odd she was never detected

well considering they made the prequel movies after the originals i doubt the events of the prequels had much bearing on the filmmakers decisions (the original point of lightsabers was that they were meant to be heavy and difficult to wield).

the ROTJ duel is good not just because of what's happening on screen in terms of the fight but how it's affecting the characters, there's a lot going on outside of the fact they are trying to hit each other with laser sticks; luke is trying to appeal to vader's humanity, vader is conflicted between his son and the emperor, the emperor is trying to convince luke of the power of the dark side. the tracking shot of luke pushing back vader is iconic, among others.

the prequel fights on the other hand are basically video game cutscenes by comparison.

as to the last point, leia was never meant to be luke's sister until they came to make ROTJ. they were just making it up as they went along.

Yoda references there being another hope at end of Empire.

Who was that meant to be if not Leia?

Not definitive that it was meant to be leia. there's speculation it was meant to be setting up another skywalker (based on drafts of empire) that would be introduced when they did another trilogy. more than likely that idea was dropped and the idea of making Luke and leia siblings was thought of during the development of Jedi.

I'm sorry but why would a sword made of superhot plasma be heavy?

There is no duel to me that has been filmed for anything that tops the lightsaber duel on mustafa, also the other things which are going on during the battle,in which obi-wan is reaching out to anakin, while Vader is going flat stick at Obi-wan,obi-wan is trying his best not to injure in his own words, his brother and friend

Obi wan lucked out by finding...the high ground and is still begging Vader not to hurt himself,it was perfect

Arguably the most powerful person still in cannon vs the perfect defensive duelist.....

because it's a movie. it's not real. lightsabers were meant to be heavy, like a two handed sword that a knight would carry.

which would have been more resonant if obi wan and anakin hadn't spent spent the last two movies basically arguing with and complaining about each other all the time. if they'd actually acted like two people who were friends and liked each other the scene would've worked better. as it is it feels unearned. great music though.

with some of the most unintentionally funny dialogue in blockbuster movie history.

Um, the friendship was shown. We just didn't see them at the pub having a beer.

This isn't the first time this topic has been brought up online and this is someone elses response;

*It shows in scenes such as: the speeder chase,
*the scene where Obi-Wan is trying to retransmit his message and is worried about Anakin,
*Anakin disobeying Mace Windu by going to save Obi-Wan on Geonosis,
*the scene on the Republic gunship,
*the banter they share in the battle of Coruscant,
*Anakin refusing to leave Obi-Wan behind (during the battle when his ship is attacked by the buzz droids and later on the Invisible Hand),
*the scene on the landing pad just after the battle,
*the scene where Obi-Wan tells Anakin that he must spy on the chancellor (I think Obi-Wan shows a lot of concern for him at the end of the scene),
*the scene just before Obi-Wan departs for Utapau,
*the deep sadness Obi-Wan shows when he watches Anakin burn.

the only way the attempted tragedy of the movies work is if anakin and obi wan are friends who are then driven apart but the scripts don't actually do any of the work needed to make this work. george lucas can't write a script very well and most of the dialogue is either exposition or basic, unsubtle characterisation. characters often just flat out state their current emotional situation, especially in the obi/anakin ROTS fight.

if you didn't know anything about star wars and just watched, say, AOTC what would you think that the relationship of anakin/obi wan is? anakin seems super resentful of obi wan for not treating him like an adult, while obi wan is mostly just exasperated at this young kid who never listens to him. they don't hate each other sure, but the best of friends? nah.
