Happy with the news. McFadden was such a poor coach that anything was going to be an upgrade. Kearney - maybe not the best option, but he's had a tonne of experience and I think we'll improve under him.

Again, were probably one big bopper short of being a top 4 side, but even with our current team and injuries we had this year, when we cut out the shit we looked like contenders.

Good news regardless, something had to give after this year. As long as we change the stupid bench options, develop some of our young talent and play more consistently next year I'll be happy

Question.
If you were a player looking for a new club is this the coaching team you would want to play under?

I honestly don't see this as a bad thing.

You've got to leave the Eels debacle out of the equation.

He's had to work with some kiwis teams with depth issues in key positions and has produced results in the past couple of years. What's been pleasing is the way they've won those games. They've hung in there, defended well and more often than not played smart. We can piss and moan all we like about some of the selections he's made, but as always, we dont know what's going on in the background.

He's a motivator (just look at the performances he get's out of guys like Blair who struggle at club level), but unlike a previous motivator (Bluey) he does have some technical nouse and most importantly, he has the respect of the players - Bluey never had that. He's been the understudy of two of the modern eras greatest coaches (Craig & Wayne) and you can pooh pooh that all you like, but he knows what winning looks like - he just has to replicate it.

This will also strengthen our recruitment with Steve having close ties to the current squad, and all going to plan David will forge future relationships.

You've also got to realise that options were thin on the ground. Some of the names tossed about do not want the job. Weren't even remotely interested.

and most importantly - Steve doesnt suffer fools

I imagine we'll get a very different Isaac Luke next year.

So where does this leave Justin Morgan and Andrew Webster?
Do they take control of the ISP? Surely they won't also remain as assistants to the top team?

And Kearney has unsurprisingly stepped down from Kiwis duties

Few facts here

Stephen Kearney Kiwis Coaching Record

  • 42 tests for 23 wins and one draw
  • Most wins of any Kiwis coach
  • Most wins by Kiwi coach against Australia (5)
  • Kiwis achieved world No.1 ranking for first time
  • Rugby League World Cup winner 2008
  • Rugby League World Cup runner-up 2013
  • Four Nations tournament winners 2010 & 2014
  • Awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit 2009
  • Named NZRL Legend of League 2012

With all these assistants its possible that in a season or two any one of them could step up to be a head coach so maybe that's why Doyle has set it up this way, to keep the one on top honest.

I've been mulling this over since i read Mixmaster's post about it last week, and have decided I'm fairly comfortable with Kearney's appointment... but then, I was pretty happy when Cappy got the role too:p

As others have said, hopefully Kearney has learned a few things about recruitment - though whether his hands were tied at Parra due to potential cap issues (how much cap space did Hayne take up, i wonder) and general board stupidity, i don't know.

I think Kearney's developed as a coach during his time with the Kiwis, but whether he can translate that to weekly success at club level, well, we'll have to wait and see, I guess

Well currently McFadden is the only confirmed assistant coach.
Stace, is gone into an advisory role as far as I'm aware. What that entails, I don't know. It could mean that he mentors the halves?
Webster and Morgan are gone.
I think there is going to be another assistant to come in
