There are 10 guys in the NRL that do the job that Menzies does for Manly but the difference is they haven't been hanging around for 14 years.

Start naming. I want 10.

Personally, i think he sh*ts all over Brad Clyde. In other words, he is the greatest lock ive ever seen. Now i know how good Johnny Raper was, but even he, i bet, would bow to how truly great Steve Menzies truly is. He is a true legend, a loyal legend. You have to respect that, and just watch while he keeps getting better, at even age 33. Well done Beaver  ... Please go one more year

You have to play lock each game if you want to be called the greated 'lock' to ever have played. I class Menzies as an amazing player, but he's not the greatest lock ever.

IMO Clyde hurt more in his tackles and got through a similar amount of work Menzies does.

If they get through the same amount of work, as you say, and Menzies has scored 160 tries, then sounds likie Menzies is above Clyde.

That's 12.

Like I've said, Menzies is an amazing player, and will be remembered not only for his talent in the game but the fact he scored an incredible amount of tries. But I still believe he isn't a lock. He, for mind, is a victim of that dirty word 'Utility' because the bloke has enough ability/agility to play in the centres, and enough strength to play in the forwards.

Manly have used him in that capacity. A traditional lock would never move from the forwards; 2nd rowers would play wider if needed, but not a lock.

Clyde had bigger impact with his defence, hence the hurting more bit, and could ball play. Menzies was a ball runner. Subtle differences in games.

Like I said, Menzies is a great player, but no tradtional lock. Clyde was.

Menzies is amazing.

Even in Origin a few years back (05 I think) he was absolutely smashing blokes in defence not bad for a guy only slightly bigger than a centre.

Awesome player.

I dislike Manly with a passion but Steve Menzies is the only thing at that club i admire.

Since 94 that bloke has been nothing but solid, i think a few peeps on here are judging his older years. But for f**k sake isn't he the highest every try scoring forward??

The bloke is one of the best if not the best backrowers to have played the game and should be deservingly remembred as a great. He just doesn't brag about it or let it get to his head Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler or Mundine style.

clyde always surronded by quality, menzies the same in the first half of his career [especially cliffy], i'd go clyde just.

menzies one of the great backrower, less lock time than clyde
not much in it as to who was better, but hey backrowers i'd go larson over the lot [even if he played lot of front row]-less attacking but a greater tackler and an 80 minute player his entire career

Awesome player, will be remembered as one of the best in his time

but as for Menzies V Clyde, the fact they can be campaired is a great tribute to Steve, but Clyde was the better player

that was last year I think. I love Beaver's defense, he has the best technique I have ever seen, hits well and never misses.

You live up to your name. Did you miss the two tries he scored at centre on Friday night?

Menzies - Brilliant Footballer. Let's leave it at that.

You do realise he has played more than 90% of his career as a forward in the backrow somewhere don't you?? :|

gosh do i really need to back this one up ?? This just a ball park figure i'm sure most Manly fans who have watched over the years would agree on. ... granted he does play alot out wide but he would still be labelled a forward for the vast majority of his career.

How long have you been watching football for?

I have seen all of Menzies career.
Menzies has played a fair bit in the centers when there have been injuries to the Eagles.
Sure, scoring 162 tries is great, but i dont get excited with try scoring stats
