Steve Menzies aka The Beaver

He played a game at fullback a couple of years ago, doesn't mean he's a fullback. He usually only plays centre to cover an injury during a game.
Besides which, I think Frank Burge was the highest scoring foward and he only had 149 or so.

The records of where Frank Burge played are incomplete. A few match programs from the era have him listed in the centres. Didn't David Middleton drop his opposition to declaring Beaver the most prolific try scoring forward in the games history last year?

He'll probably end up with the second best try scoring record in premiership history when he hangs up the boost. Considering how far ahead of the pack Ken Irvine is, I think that's something to be proud of, especially for a guy who played the overwhelming majority of his career in the forwards.

Proof about Burge?

Secondly, Burge played a sh*tload less games than Beaver. Strike rate wise, I'd take Burge ahead of Beaver.

No one is saying that he is anything but a forward when all is said and done.
What i am saying is he has played many games in the backs covering for injuries.

Since 1998 Menzies has played 12 (and four at 5/8) games in the centres for Manly. The rest have been at either second row or lock.

They didn't keep statistics on where players played up until the 1950's. What records we have from that era were painstakingly compiled by someone going through the State Librarys micro Fiche newspaper archives...and, oddly enough, team lists were very rarely printed.

Well, I guess it doesn't matter. I don't think Beaver will be an immortal, but he's been a great player. He's really developed his play making in the last few years so hasn't been scoring as many himself (not to mention he's a lot slower). The try scoring record reall depends on how many games you've played, and Beaver really hasn't been injured much.

I would be very surprised if he has been named to play more than 30 games at centre in his 300 + games.

There have been a number of games he's been named in the forwards and at some stage moved into the centres - namely the last game he played. I don't think anybody is in any way trying to suggest he's rubbish, but calling him an all time great of the game I think is a bit disrespectful to the players over history that genuinely are greats of the game.

I'm talking about proof on what Middleton stated about Burge being named in the centres.

My original post was poorly explained, sorry.

He has 1 of the best tackling techniques you will ever see, and would be regarded as 1 of the best running backrowers as well to back that up.

I think it is fair to regard him as 1 of the top backrowers of all time, given the fact that you would be very hard pushed to find a blemish on his all round game

Disrespectful & ignorant.

Menzies is an all time great backrow forward of the game. No question.

hes awesome, his try scoring record, his durability (this years 12 week injury has been one of the few blemishes on his record) is extremely high which will be shown at the end of 2008 when his first grade games list edges towards 350 he hits hard and hits solidly rarely comes up with ineffective tackles but most especially his loyalty amazing to stay at one club his whole career when other offers and probably more money were offered at various stages of his career

Clyde > Menzies overall ...

but they were completely different types of locks

Clyde was a prop playing lock ... but with the workrate of a backrower and the speed of a backrower - almost centre ... he bent the line

Menzies is a hole runner ... a centre whose defence is good enough to play in the backrow

neither could ball-play ... for want of a better example its a bit like comparing Menzies to Anasta ... given lock is probly Anasta's best position

its like comparing apples to oranges

Oink !

I never saw Clyde play and Menzies is the best ever back-rower I have seen.

Ive seen both mate, and the only difference between the two is that Menzies was actually on the field for ALL of his reputation. Clyde, unfortunately, was injured almost every single year he played. Thats why Menzies is better, nothing more nothing less. Poor Brad had some horrendous luck on the injury front ... so therefore i could never class him better than Steve.

Perfect summary of one of the games greats , would doubt he has ever been suspended/cited in all over those +300 games.

He was put on report for a shoulder charge on Ah Van (I think) in his first match last year, but it was either dismissed or he was found not guilty.

And he has been binned a couple of times before, but one was for telling Clark 'You're having a good game, sir'

Yeah it was Simpkins he told "your having a good game sir" he must of been having a bad day to send someone off for that. And the hit on Ah Van got thrown out the window cause it was nothing but an awesome hit it only got put on report because Ah Van didnt get up, poor guy it was his first ever game into the nrl Beaver was just saying welcome to the big league.

Can anyone confirm if he has actually been suspended ever in his 315 game career? i cant remember. I think he has only been sent of twice in 15 or 16 years which isnt bad either.
