How long before he plays a test match ?

Shane Warne has called on Australia to give Steve Smith a Test debut
By Jay Clark
December 29, 2009
Shane Warne has declared young leg spinner Steven Smith "ready" to make a dream Test debut in Sydney in the New Year's Test, starting Sunday.

Warne urged selectors to pluck the baby-faced 20-year-old from obscurity and play two spinners in the second Test, provided the SCG pitch looks like it will turn.

Smith, who has taken only 11 wickets in nine first-class matches at an average of 75, has not even bowled to Australia skipper Ricky Ponting in the nets.

But Warne, who was impressed by his heir apparent in a 45-minute one-on-one coaching session on Sunday, said the time was right to usher in a new era of Australian spin bowling.

"The way he bowls he looks ready. As long as he thinks well, and I think he has a good head on his shoulders, he's a chance," Warne said.

"Ideally you want everyone to be playing 30 or 40 first-class games first so they know themselves a lot better and can learn their craft in all different conditions.

"But sometimes you haven't got that luxury. You could throw him in as a second spinner and if they do, I think he will do a good job."

Warne, the world's greatest leg-spinner who took 708 Test scalps, believes New South Wales leggie Smith has all the attributes required to succeed at the highest level.

"He is hungry, he is a good kid, he has a lot of talent and he bats well, so he's a good all-round cricketer," Warne said.

If picked, Smith would be one of the most courageous call-ups from selectors since they gambled on a young Warne, at the same ground against India, in 1992.

The visitors would almost certainly try to attack Smith as a way of getting back into the series.

Australia's spin stocks within the team have dipped with Simon Katich and Michael Clarke both preferring not to roll their arms over as a result of back injuries. That may leave only Marcus North to support frontline spinner Nathan Hauritz.

Pakistan are hopeful their No.1 leggie Danish Kaneria will recover from a finger injury in time for the Sydney Test.

"Kaneria is a very good bowler, with lots of variety in his bowling," Warne said.

"The one thing that he does lack though for a top-spinner is patience."

The visitors are desperate to play two spinners and pose a greater threat to the Australia batsmen at the SCG.

Warne said the selection dilemma for Australia was a difficult one as they would have to either drop a batsman or one of their quicks to make room for the untried Smith.

Warne said selectors were also cautious not to overload injury-prone all-rounder Shane Watson with too much bowling.

"The thing going through the selectors' minds is do we keep it the same and just use Marcus North, Simon Katich, Michael Clarke (if fitness permits) to bowl some spin if needed?" he said.

"Because the one problem they have is if they decide to play two quicks and two spinners, Shane Watson will have to open the batting and bowl first change.

"But you need to know the conditions first.

"Sydney, most of the time, is a spinning wicket.

"But there have been times when we've gone up there and it's been raining so it might be a bit greener and seam around.

"So you might only want one spinner for the Test."

No way in hell I would play both Smith and Hauritz as bowlers, if Smith replaced Hussey as a batter then we would be sweet to go.

When Hauritz is injured or dropped, Smith will play. He's next in line, clearly...I just hope they stick with him through a few series. Spinners often struggle to make their mark early, even Warnie took a good 18 months to make it. Sadly, the clowns running the show don't seem to stick with spinners for very long (except Hauritz for some reason)

We need cover for Hauri and his straight breaks

as the article says, Clarke=sore back, North=more straight breaks, Kat=never gets a bowl

that leaves us with Hauri on the SCG

We could ditch Siddle and play Smith, or even ditch Hussey and play Smith which would give us 2 spinners

There are a number of different option we can go for, I dont see our regular team being too competitive at the SCG, especially if the Pakis play Caneria.

They might bring in McDonald for Sydney like last year

Personally it would have been ideal to give Smith a few ODI games first. Then again as far as spinners go in tests, its desperate times for desperate measures

I think they will play Smith and bat him at 6 leaving out North. I 'd prefer them leaving out Hussey but thats how I see things playing out. Be very surprised if they left out Siddle he and Ponting have a special bond hahha.

I don't think he is ready, and rushing him in early might ruin him. As PB said give him a run in the ODI's first and then gradually ease him in.

I'd be very nervous about playing him as a frontline bowler. Needs to probably play in the top 6, and with Hughes being the next in line, he'll probably have to wait a while to make the test team.

I'm a bit the same, but I'd be even more nervous about going to the SCG with only Hauri as a so called spinner

I'd trust Warnie's judgement, I saw him working with Smith on the cricket show so he probably has some idea of where he is at.

Drop Siddle, Watson is a better bowler than the Victorian anyway and doesn't get to bowl as much as he should

Kat = sore shoulder, heard him earlier this summer complaining of a sore shoulder that stops him bowling to go with his usual bad back

Smith could do some damage at the SCG, his strike rate of a wicket every 103 balls there and average over 60 will have the Pakistani batsmen shaking in their boots

Nowhere near ready in my opinion. Bryce McGain is a much better bowler and we know how he went in his one and only test. I suspect Smith would get massacred just as badly by the Pakistanis.

I've also got a feeling Smith could turn out to be Cameron White mark 2 - decent bat, not there as a bowler.

funny thing is, some here and some in the media actually thought Cam White could bowl...

Let him get massacred IMO it worked well for Warney. He can't be any worse than Hauritz and at least he turns the ball consistently

thats what I think

I agree Smith isn't ready but anything, even Katich with a crook shoulder is batter than Hauritz

Surely Hauritz is on his last legs though, Krejza has bowled well this summer he must be in with a chance. SMith is doing well with the bat but needs to do more with the ball heck even Holland would no doubt do better than Hauritz

He should play in sydney, at the expense of a fast bowler.
Watson is a decent enough bowler to give us 20 overs an innings if they need him to, so 3 quicks (counting Watson) and 2 spinners in Sydney is the go.
Smith needs to be rushed into the side. He is the only potential world class spinner in the country.

I agree drop Siddle for Smith.... I do think Holland from Victoriania has huge potential he just needs to be given a game by the Victorians instead of old man Mcgain
