Steven Peter Devereux Smith - Best Test Batsman Since Bradman

Very good ODI career however I remember his fielding more than anything else. Took some screamers.

Back half of his ODI career came at a weird time when the format started dying. He was great in the 2015 WC without scoring a century.

Scored a century in the Semi Final vs India - 105 off 93 balls.

After looking at his stats in WCs it's fair to say he had more than a good career as I previously said. Excellent career. Not sure if he'd be in my best ever Australian XI but would be in the 20 man squad.
With having so much success in the ODI format you could pick close to 3 all time teams really. Where Smith fits into that who knows.

Maybe my first team Gilchrist and Mark Waugh as opneers Ponting would probably be at 3, Jones at 4, maybe smudge instead of Tugga at 5 and Symonds at 6 with Bevan at 7.

We have been fortunate to have had so many generations of great ODI players.

Like Travis Head for example would probably make the 3rd greatest team currently in the opening position.

Batting average as captain: 68.98

And he is captain for the 1st test. Putting my money on the first century of the Summer to come via the bat of SPD Smith.

Thinking of putting a bet on him to score the most runs in he series for us

Head will be a contender as well, he gets better as he gets older

Definately a chance if the top order doesn't fire.

And even if they do score runs he is still a chance himself. He is our Gilly these days. He scores so fast. Against a tired attack he could blow England off the park.

220 runs this series will see him past Jack Hobbs into second on the top Ashes run scorers charts. Needs 1612 to pass the Don (I don’t think this will happen)

Want him to hold on for 1 more England tour

150th anniversary test is in March 2027. He will be 37 turning 38 by the next Ashes tour that year.

Still 13 tests before that (Afghanistan, SA, NZ and India) which is fair amount of cricket. I'm curious to know how he will go with the SA tour. He has some demons to exercise over there.

I'd say 150th test is a chance for retirement. Its not the SCG though. Some players want a send-off at their home ground. Others like AB or Clarke retired overseas. Not sure what SPD Smith would want.

83 to go. Unless we get a road he likely ends up 3rd. Missing Adelaide could be the clincher.

If Greenberg gets the pitch he wants then Bradmans record is likely in play.

Remember last summer he hinted at playing some t20 leagues when retiring from red ball. So red ball retirement isnt too far away if he still wants a year or two of playing that useless shit and giggle.

Id be very surprised he goes beyond the 150th anniversary test

Not that he or anyone would want him to, but sitting out the SA tour might not be a bad thing. Can focus on the home kiwi test and indian tour and the 150th anniversary

Problem also he isnt getting younger and not going to be as good as he has been, like Kholi may grab a good score here and there but predominately we probably see more failures. If he is killing it at 37, then will only add to his stardom which others that age havent been able to do

I hope he plays on as long as he wants.

A real legend of our game. In these cases I don't mind a send off tour for them.

SCG is his home deck and it will probably be suited to the batsmen. Three figures coming surely.

Remember Punter getting his ton at the SCG? Overshadowed by Clarke's 329* but lets see a repeat of that for Smith.

And this bit...

I'd much rather see him fly over there and pummel them. A real test for our squad as SA are technically the best and just beat India on their home turf. I really like Marco Jansen.

I might even be looking forward to that series more than this Ashes.
