Stopping a try with your foot: ban it.

Thought leading with the foot was already against the rules?

It is, but it is rarely scrutinised. Maybe the NRL are too concerned that people may pick up on their hypocrisy when it comes to Billy Slater so they let the majority of cases get swept under the carpet.

I hate Matai as much as anyone but I didn't think his was that terrible. Hayne on Goodwin in 09 was farm worse and wasn't punished.

I agree Packy. I hate Manly and would love to see Matai go but I didn't see anything there that warranted more than a penalty. Tony Williams on the other hand was rather lucky in my opinion.

Again, Hayne was charged in 2009 but like Thurston escaped suspension due to early plea.

Matai's knees were straight in the back. IIRC at least Hayne turned slightly so that he at least half hit him with his thigh.

Aren't we talking about two separate things though? Knees in the back are vastly different to trying to get your leg under the ball to stop a try.

Geez, Matai must have hit Yow Yee pretty hard in the back for him to be clutching at his ribs. Are you sure you saw it?

What Matai did was attempt to put his foot out to get under the ball then decided it wasn't going to work and would be dangerous so he pulled his foot back. This obviously meant that his knees were the next closest part of his body.

What an amazing quick thinker he is and truly exceptional athlete to do all that in a split second...but what is even more amazing is your ability to KNOW what he was thinking or intending through the whole thing!
Actually, i don't know why I'm amazed...so many on here are also truly exceptionally, amazingly talented at that very thing.

Cloud surfer, to be fair he only did that after firstly considering setting of a flare in the western corner to create a distraction, and then secondly thinking about repainting the side line so that it was a meter further in-field. He thinks quick on his feet old Stevie M.

FFS firechild, he had no intention of putting his foot under the ball, he simply slid in with the knees to injury Yow Yee. It was a thug act, from a thug player.

Mate, you've just got to watch it again. He goes to throw his left foot out at the ball and then pulls it back at the last moment. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out what happened. I could be wrong about the motives but I can't imagine it would have been something like deciding that he didn't actually want to stop the try.

Gee these forums would be boring if none of us were every wrong Firechild :D How could we argue if we were all always right.

Regardless of his motives, Matai probably would have been held up to more scrutiny if he did have his leg out, trying to kick and dislodge the ball and thats what i don't understand. I don't remember too many guys missing games because they were injured by an errant boot to the head from a guy wanting to stop a try with his foot, but there have been lots of guys with busted ribs because of guys sliding in with the knees.

Matai want to use his body to in a sense, slide under Yow Yeh to take him into touch.

Naturally, he is at pace and coming from quite a few metres away.

In the meantime, Robertson has done a terrific job tackling Yow Yeh and forcing him to the ground, so Yow Yeh is much lower.

Matai's knees collect Yow Yeh in the ribs (back? What game are you watching?)

It was a bit clumsy, 100% accident, no more than a stray boot etc while playing RUGBY LEAGUE.

You're probably right. Michael Robertson was injured when Slater threw a boot at him when he was scoring the first of his 3 tries in the '08 GF. Thankfully it was nothing serious and he was able to continue. I'm not condoning what Matai did, just trying to put some sort of context onto it where other people want to see him suspended simply because he is Steve Matai. If you watch the video, Matai had about half a second to decide how he was going to try to stop Yow Yee (who funnily enough only 30 seconds earlier was so badly hurt he couldn't open his eyes, but that is a matter for a different discussion) from scoring in the corner. Matai may be a serial offender when it comes to high shots (a problem he has reportedly spent countless hours trying to rectify) but I don't think I've ever seen him throwing feet or knees at players about to score (or in any other situation). To see him (or anyone else) rubbed out of a GF for something like that would have been a shame. When you consider the Cameron Smith was not cited for a blatant elbow to the face of Locke, it certainly seems fair that he will be playing on Sunday.

I'd be happy to see knees to the ribs ir backs treatthe same way as ahigh tackle. Doesn;t matter if it was intentional or not the act and consequence deserve punishment due to the high risk of injury being caused. Very bizarre that they are now saying kicking at the ball is not punishable unless it causes injury, seems a very different take on previous comments about the rule.
Mind you this is the NRL and depending on who you are, who you play for or what game you have coming up in the next week or two there seems to be a fair bit of "interpretation" to most foul play.

If you are sliding knees first into a player (yes ribs, not back but does it really matter?), then the onus should be on you not to make contact. Accidents happen, yes, but players also get suspended all the time for accidental events because they are illegal. And its also why there are gradings of intentional, reckless and careless.

Your honour I wish to plead guilty as charged :D
