He should be looking at getting the players that are actually going to get picked together too. It's all well and good for the longterm to have camps with the up and comers, but IMO he needs to do something that will help this year's campaign too.

1. Dugan
2. Gordon
5. Uate

Now that's a very dangerous back three. Of course, there are some very dopey selections in this development squad - as if Alan Tongue or Matt Prior are ever going to play rep footy.

Im doubtful Soward could have contributed more imo. Im not saying this to rip on Dragons fans but I really dont see any better alternatives for NSW running around.

You're probably right but we do know that Pearce was a failure when he was given the opportunity. Three times.

Pfft. Barrett was running the show last year. Pearce was clearly told to take a back seat. Nevertheless, he got a couple of try assists, which is more than can be said for most of the rabble that was NSW last year.

How do you go about naming a squad like that, choc full of blokes who arent even playing FG yet but not name Shaun Fensom

i think me and Fensom are the only NSWelshmen that werent named

Boyd Cordner, Stuart Mills, Aaron Woods, Ryan James, Aaron Woods?
But no shaun fensom, come on man

Pearce is not up to it face it, i suppose he was told to have a back seat in the grand final as well

Soward wouldn't offer more then any other choice. Todd Carney will be the five eight so Pearce may as well join him as he isn't terrible, there aren't many better choices and they already have a combination.

My only fear now for our halves is Ricky doing what he does best and cripples halves careers.

Totally agree with this. However not sure if he is still the man to do the job. I just hope Carney helps bring the best out of him in the origin arena

they've picked the right 3 Knights (Paterson, Uate, Mullen). Houston might eventually work his way onto that list once he gets some footy under his belt and everyone gets over the issue, too.

i don't see many, or any hookers mentioned anywhere. with Gidley pencilled in as a part of the core already... are we to assume that Gidleys performance in game 3 last year left a bigger impression on Stuart than some of the shorter memories in this thread? the more i look at the list of players in the development squad, and then look at the "core" list... the more this makes sense. it could also be perceived as a clear signal to Ennis, Farah and anyone else who wants a crack to lift their games.

Newcastle probably can't afford to lose Mullen and Gidley during an origin period. i've got my fingers, toes and balls crossed that if they pick one, they don't pick the other. it will depend on how season goes, either way. you can bet your bottom dollar that if we fly high, or even just higher than expected early in the season - Gidley will be in. do i agree with it? depends where he plays. i'd be ok with giving him a game at hooker to see what happens, and after game 3 last year he can have his bench spot back, too. Given that both Pearce and Carney are in the "core" group, I think we're pretty safe with Mullo.

it worries me, though, when his name comes up around origin time. ever since his origin debut, he has fallen in a heap during the origin period. his snubbing absolutely devastated his confidence. he was really looking mature on the field the second half of last year, though. no surprise that our forwards started to do their job, and he had a bit of backup from Gidley in the halves at the same time. he's now 100 games into his first grade career and 23 years of age. this is the sort of time in a players career when they should be lining up for origin selection... you don't chuck a 20 year old into the fire with a hack partner, yet that's exactly what they did.

It still pisses me off what they did to Mullo. He was never a player with a great deal of confidence even before he was chosen. That's one of the reasons why B Smith fought against his selection so much. He knew that Mullo didn't have enough confidence to handle being made a scapegoat when the Blues inevitably lost (which they were always going to, despite who they had in the halves). But of course the selectors didn't give a sh*t about any of that. They just tossed him aside as soon as they lost (even though there were a lot worse performers on that night - his halves partner in particular who ironically kept his spot). They made him a scapegoat, and killed whatever confidence he had left. And it's a tragedy, because you can see in the rare occasions that he does actually back himself just how talented he actually is.

They did the same thing to Campese too. One loss, and he's out on his ass. Another player who's confidence was destroyed by the selectors.

And yet, Pearce gets three games, in which he plays far worse than Mullen or Campese ever did in their one opportunity, and the selectors stick by him. I think it's good though that they're sticking with him, I wouldn't want to see them destroy the confidence of yet another young player. However, I just wish that Mullo and Campese were given the same treatment as Peace was.

That would be like thinking Hayne has already named to play fullback...

Just think Stuart is hedging...gives the opportunity for Ennis/Farah to make that spot their own.
