Suncorp Stadium set to host NRL grand final

Rugby League should be getting support from soccer and union to get the bottom bowl of ANZ permanently reconfigured to be more viewer friendly. Taking the odd grand final to Suncorp would not harm their cause

Shock, horror, how dare they take a GF out of Sydney? FFS it's supposed to be heading to a national game, I see no reason why the GF can't be played in any city that can guarantee a sell out and that makes the NRL most money. If the Vic Govt want to bid for it and we are likely to get 90,000 at the MCG to watch then great! It shows Australia that we are no longer the NSWRL, oh but then that would mean having to accept that the game has moved beyond Suburban Sydney, god forbid!!

It works in the NFL, let the cities bid for it and lets see our game spread across the country and making the most money it can.
Why does anyone pro- this idea continue to bag Sydney fans as insular? It has NOTHING to do with the location of the Grand Final.

At present, Sydney has the most teams and the biggest available stadium to boot, excluding the MCG, which has only ever hosted 2-3 RL games. Moving it to Suncorp sees THIRTY THOUSAND less people able to attend, does that make sense to you? The only way to make it viable would be to exponentially increase ticket prices and put it out of the price range of many people... then where would the sell out be?
what a load of sh*t!

RL is a 2 state code essentially.
AFl is a truly national game.

when you have a 2 state code, and refuse to nationalise your sport - then you have legitimate claims to have alternate GF's or every few years alternate to the other state.

its the first time I have heard something good out of Anna - what a great move!

lol at you sydney wimps crying foul over it all - maybe if you supported RL more by actually attending games (World cup anyone?) then you could claim the interest level equals Qld. bring it on!!!!
 You're right, nobody bothers with RL in Sydney anymore.

Never mind the 25,871 at ANZ last night for a trial.

this is a good point.
with less tickets, there is more demand, and higher prices.

I would pay DOUBLE the price of the sydney ticket to see a local GF - would still be ahead taking into account an air fare and accom etc to Moaney (i mean sydney).

more money is potentially on offer to the NRl - not less

Mike Coleman- love your work in the Courier Mail. I'm curious- who should merge with whom in Sydney to create "progress"?

i like the idea of every 4/5 years having other cities bid for the nrl grand final. for eg. 4 years syd, 5th year bris, 4 years syd, 5th year melb, 4 years syd, 5th year auckland!

the 30k less seat thing is a non issue. The NSW crew keep hanging onto that for dear life...pfff 30k seats - thats the normal difference between a bronco home game and a penrith one!

Right. Because there has been talk of playing the GF at Penrith Park, hasn't there?

Look, if the GF was still held at the SFS Qld might have a point. But they don't, Sydney has a bigger ground and the tradition to do with it. As well as the most teams. It stays there.

Non-issue? For what reason is having 30,000 less people able to watch a Grand Final a non-issue? The one you've supplied is the stupidest thing I've read this year.

How is it a non issue

30,000 people
Tickets are how much, $100 each on average?
That's already $3 million...
Say everyone spends buys a drink and chips, that's another $10 each.
$300,000 more.
Not to mention merchandise and whatever else they can get out of them

its only early....

heres another one...

those 30k less tickets would hopefully mean 30k less NSW whingers coming up here for the big one....:D

So now as a Queenslander whinging there aren't enough NSWmen going to the game, you now are OK with 30,000 less seats being available on the biggest day of the year?

Personally I think it's a great idea for cities to bid to host the Grand Final. Part of the bidding process should be what the city will offer for hosting it. AFL has the grand final parade (which the NRL used to have), and this could be part of the festivities that the host city provides. The money as well that the city offers the NRL would also provide invaluable.

I don't understand all the nay-sayers. It's not like the game isn't played in other states, and for that reason should be shared around. Actually most of you complain that the NRL aren't doing enough, but when they do provide something different like this, you all jump on it like they killed your mother. You have to come to the realisation that the game is now played in 3 states and one other country, like the NFL, the event should move around these areas, and in most cases, the highest bidder is the winner. If the NRL grand final does move, you only have the NSW state goverment to blame, because it was money that made the difference.

Play it in Brisbane then, and watch the revolt take place when two sydney sides make it. Its the NSWRL by proxy, you whingers have two home ground semi's, and now you want the GF...No.

Just out of curiosity, how many games do you get off your fat arse to actually go and see? You sound like an armchairtard to me.

One or two.

Takes a weekend to see my mob from where I live. No excuse, I know. If I had 2 termite mounds on my chest instead of a brain, of course.

But, seeing as you are a Sydney based RL fan, and you claim Sydney fans are lazy and not deserving of any sides, are you not calling yourself lazy, and undeserving of a side?

Anyway, what the friggin hell are you doing out of the kitchen??????

How does not selling out in Sydney equate to what crowd would turn up in Melbourne?

I'm not saying that Melbourne should get it but I think the NRL would be wise not to tie itself into another long term contract next time around. 2-3 years tops or even alternate years Brisbane and Sydney for the next 4 years. Then lets see if any other city wants to put up a few mill to host it.

Laurel lawrence " give me a window to the world and i will show you how to lick it".

And i will leave wally out of this cause he's bald and that.

Why does QLD deserve it more than us though?

You don't see the AFL moving their GF from the G to AAMI/Subi just to acknowledge that their respective states supports RL...

Wembley hosts the FA Cup every year and it doesn't need to be moved to Old Trafford cause the Mancs love football..

poor comparison. wembley is a neutral venue.

the stad de oz should be too. keep it for origin games, prelims and the GF. its deadset embarrassing to the code having 10k attend games at that venue.

but in regards to the GF up in Brisbane, i have no problem in principle in rotating the venue. issues may arise though say if two sydney teams playoff in the decider.
