Toulouse Olympique and London Broncos will battle it out for a place in Super League next week after Featherstone Rovers' long wait for a place in the top flight continues. The two clubs will face one another on Sunday, October 15th to determine who replaces Wakefield Trinity after they both won their semi-finals.
But it's the fact Featherstone will not be involved that grabs the headlines, with the West Yorkshire club once again falling short in their quest for promotion. Rovers have been strong favourites to gain promotion this year and ended the season top of the table, winning the league by 12 points, losing only two league games in the process.
Earlier this year, Featherstone sacked previous head coach Sean Long, who was dismissed after their loss to Halifax Panthers in August. James Ford, the former York Knights coach, has been in charge since. Interestingly, Featherstone are thought to have agreed to deals with a number of players for next year, subject to being in Super League.
Meanwhile, next week's final will see the return of a former Super League club. London last competed in the top flight in 2019 while Toulouse made their first appearance last year. Both were relegated after just one season in their previous stints. Toulouse ended the season in second and therefore have home advantage over the Broncos, who finished fourth after a superb end to the campaign which saw them surge into the top six. Toulouse defeated Bradford Bulls 38-20 to book their place in the final.
London were 18-12 up at half-time, with Scotland international Alex Walker scoring twice. But the key moment came when Brad Day was sin-binned after half-time, which prompted a scoring frenzy that saw the visitors score three quickfire tries. Featherstone rallied late on but it was too little, too late, as their long wait to play in Super League continues.
The promotion favourites have been knocked out of the play-offs.
